Personally, I think Jill could've held the group down after Vanity's departure. She had more of a believable sex appeal to compliment her musical talent, and it would only help her once she decided to branch out as a solo artist. Nothing against Apples.

Possessed: the Rise & Fall of Prince
p 63
chapter 5 Majesty
A turning point in the relationship came when Vanity had an affair with Albert Magnoli, enraging Prince. Just a few months before shooting was to begin, Vanity left Purple Rain. She has said she quit over money issues, although other reports indicated she was fired. One knowledgeable source says Vanity was indeed dismissed, and that both her financial demands and the affair with Magnoli were factors.
Prince and his managers agreed that the best course was to find a replacement who could in essence stand in for Vanity. Hundreds of obscure actresses and wannabes answered the call to audition for the vacant role. Prince quickly settled on 22 yr old Patricia Kotero of Santa Monica, California, who had starred in the miniseries Mystic Warriors. The reason for the selection was obvious to everyone: Kotero looked very much like Vanity: Prince inauspiciously dubbed her Apollonia, after a character in the first Godfather film (played by Simonetta Stefanelli) who is killed by a car bomb after marrying Al Pacino's Michael Corleone.
Shortly after recruiting Apollonia, he took her to a Los Angeles club where he had heard that Vanity would be partying. Vanity, who had not yet learned anything about her replacement, was shocked to see a woman dancing nearby who looked like a mirror image of herself.

One of the actresses who auditioned for the role was Jennifer Beales, who was riding high at the time thanks to her starring role in the 1983 blockbuster film "Flashdance".

Unfortunately, Susan's clinging to the teddy bear becomes more and more unsettling as I get older. It looked sexy when I was 10 years old, but looking at it now makes me feel like R. Kelly.

What's even more disturbing is that, when the Vanity 6 album was released, there were rumors that Susan was only 16 years old I think it has since been confirmed that she was at least 18 (legal age) in 1982

Actress Gina Gershon also auditioned for "P.R." also.

* * I clearly remember being home from school one day, sick or something, and seeing an MTV News update about Prince holding an open casting call for the lead actress for a movie he was filming. I wasnt yet into Prince, and didn't know much about him besides the fact he was from Minneapolis which was a standout fact for me since Mpls was only a few hours away from my hometown. Despite my not yet being a Prince fan, I thought it was cool that there was an open casting call for the movie being held in Minneapolis, and thought how I'd like to go just for kicks, but I was only 16 at the time and I remember you had to be 18 to audition. There might have been more physical specifications or requirements too, but I don't recall for sure. I do remember Mark Goodman was the VJ for that particular news update that day! Funny what sticks in your mind.

* * I can understand your feeling but I always liked Susan's "character" in the group as the 'innocent' all-white-wearing teenybopper temptress, and the teddy bear was so prop-ish to me it didn't ick me out or make me uncomfortable. Now if she'd had a pacifier or a bottle, or her outfits went WAY extreme to the childlike, then I'd have found that unsettling for sure!

* * Vindictive and petty. I thought I'd heard there was more to this incident, like Vanity went up and spoke to Prince and Apples...? I might be misremembering though.

That's a great song.I love the drumming by Sheila E. and you can clearly hear Prince's vocals on this song, especially when he starts saying "somebody....somebody clap yo hands"

"Blue Limousine" is a pop gem: The chorus is... an instrumental! The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter

I agree...this song is a pop gem.I would also add that this song is musically stronger than anything on the Vanity 6 album. It has a "fuller" sound....it actually sounds like several layers of synths.Brenda's vocals are great, and the song has very good lyrics, with a little humor too...
I can't stop him....wherever he parks his car is alright But he'll be parking with a dent in the side if he stands me up tonight
