Dr Dre is not fit to pass comment on Prince. Like a rotten, maggot-filled apple commenting on a cool, delicious orange. Wouldn't be right! mad

This is a really corny comment and reflects poorly on the site overall

Anyone got a link to Snoop dissing Prince?

I could have said Dre is really shit, I despise him and don't give a fuck what his opinion is on Prince, because he's soooo far beneath him artistically, but I chose corny instead.

.

You got one thing right, I'm no flagbearer for this site, that's for sure!

Whatever. rolleyes

^ thumbs up!

ps. I have never liked Dre or hiphop at all, maybe I am just a "grumpy" old man.. biggrin

I prefer, pop, funk, soul, rock, disco... those more "classic" genres, with good "song writing", and real musicianship. wink

I detest socalled hiphop "artists" just rapping over a beat or a stolen sample from a real song.

I prefer the "originals".

Same. A lot of music i love now i was too young to appreciate as a teen. A lot of it pre-dates me. I love the exploration of music. I Just don't like all types.

It's coming back to me now although I don't remember the source. Dr. Dre has said that if he could work with anybody it would be Prince

. . at one point Max Martin said the same thing

ultimately Prince chose to work with Joshua Welton instead

Surprised at all the hate for Dr. Dre (and hip-hop in general) here...

Dre has made some great records... there's no point comparing him to Prince, or saying he's 'beneath' him, how ridiculous...

Of course, there's no contest, talent-wise or musicianship-wise, but Dre certainly has talent. But he has only made three distinct solo albums, aside from his work with NWA and many others that were his proteges etc...

True, Dre did base much of his iconic work - around the time of The Chronic and Doggystyle - on the work of George Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic and other P-Funk era tunes... but they were never just lazy raps a la Puff Daddy talking nonsense over a Police song... Dre always added his own thing... and he had a very distince world view.

He's had a significant impact on urban music over the last three decades... and, much as I love Prince's recent work, it is very much in a bubble... and Dre's recent Compton album, which I find incredibly good, is far more vital, alive, adventurous and exciting than nearly anything Prince has done in a while.

I don't know if Dre ever mentioned Prince, or why he shoud have to. He knows what's going on, he's something of a musicologist in that sense, I think.

And while there's a lot of unoriginal hip-hop out there, to write it all off as unoriginal is just a bit daft. One listen to Kendrick Lamar's (another Dre protege) incredible 'To Pimp A Butterfly' would confirm that.

Tupac certainly did sample IIWYG. It's the original unreleased version of "Thugz Get Lonely Too". It samples the live version from the SOTT movie rather than the studio version.

Actually there's a few more instances too.

The unreleased Thug Life era song "Is It Cool 2 Fuck?" samples "Get It Up". The unreleased original version of "Pac's Life" has a replayed riff from "Pop Life". And the Digital Underground/Tupac collaboration "Wussup With The Luv" samples "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker". That's in addition to the Heartz Of Men use of Darling Nikki and the 777-9311 sample, which Tupac used for "Whatz Ya Phone #".

It may just be me, but I think " To live and die in L.A." samples "Do me, baby".

Yep! Can't believe I forgot to mention it since it's my fave Tupac song lol

It's not a sample though. It's replayed. And not based on the Prince version. Based on Meli'sa Morgan's cover of the song.

I remember back in the day....that rap artists used to diss James Brown - when he started clamping down on use of his music in sampling

Snoop is just being bitter here..."Gin & juice" is still the bomb! as is "Next Episode"...

Not really a praise, but Dre produced a cover of "Crazy You" played by Jimmy Z during his time at Ruthless Records.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vbb9_qDc8A4

Jimmy Z. shares an anedocte about this recording :

http://ztribe.com/nwa-straight-outta-compton-then-torrance-westlake/

"One day in the studio, after sufficient quantities of Gin and Juice, they started arguing about a Prince song Crazy You I’d recorded and whether or not it should be on my album. Soon it was a wrestling match and then escalated to an all out brawl with furniture flying. Infamous Zydeco piano man Eddie Baytos was in the studio that day and had the misfortune of walking in when a piece of furniture whizzed by his head. He gave me a WTF look and I shrugged and said, “It’s ok…just an Executive Production Meeting.” "

The typo of his album art is very similar to Mazarati's album.

Yeah, he's clearly just unhappy about the Prince copyright/sampling issues. Then when Snoop brings up the fact that it's not just about Prince-branded but also associate artists songs that were written by Prince (probably the ones he sees as more useful for sampling) the off-camera person tries to take it in a "Prince-is-so-multi-talented-and-plays-everything" direction, Snoop (who already isn't happy) gets mad that the interviewer's trying to interrupt and redirect what he's in the middle of saying, and that's when he really seems to get angry. But I think it has to do in part with the interviewer's stepping on his toes, too, not just with Prince's hangups and how they impact hiphop artists.

Shock G. did remixes of the track, which remain unreleased...

The remix on the Crystal Ball set was done by Shock G, so that one did get released.

I dont think he sampled IIWYG; Heartz of Men contains the backward masked part of Darling Nikki and another song on same CD samples 777-9311. I think there's another song that samples a guitar solo from Prince but can't remember off top of my head.

But NWA´s quasi-predeccesor World Class Wreckin Cru all tried to copy Prince and the way he dressed, including the sex related lyrics. Even Dre, who was part of them, wore ruffled shirts.

I asked Philadelphia rapper Schoolly D on Facebook why he would post a picture of Prince after Prince passed away because back in the day Schoolly D dissed Prince pretty hard in his song I Don´t Like RockNRoll, and Schoolly said to me that they didn´t like him because Prince dissed rappers first, and he changed his mind after Prince opened up to rap music, and now he thinks Prince was great.

Go figure.

in an interview from the 90's Dre named Prince when asked if who he'd like to produce if he could produce any artist. Shame it never happened.

Should be noted that Snoop seems to be the only person in the world who didn't sayanything about Prince in the last few days

Yeah , I noticed that too. I still like Snoop, and I think one could say to his credit that at least he´s being honest and true to himself, because he was critical of him before he died, so why should he change his tune?

Then again, maybe it wasn´t such a big issue to him and he does feel sad, too. I mean, he did channel some purple flavor in his Sensual Seduction song and video, and he´s friends with DamFunk, who is a huge Prince fan and is very affected by Prince´s death.
