I know that most West Coast acts paid respect to Prince. Like Ice Cube, Shock G, Tupac (sampling), Snoop Dogg, Dj Quik, Above The Law (sampling) and so on. But I've never heard Dr. Dre say anything about Prince. Does anyone recall him praising Prince in some interview or elsewhere?

Back in -91 Digital Underground had a lyric that went like this:

"Funk is my mother, George is my father"

Now, DU was a huge deal in the states and especially on the West Coast during the Golden years of Hip Hop (1988-1993) I also believe they had a close relationship with NWA/NWA post Ice Cube. And since Prince also is a big admireer of Parliament and George, you would think their paths have been crossed sometime.

Prince, Shock G. and Ice Cube's paths have crosseed numerous times...
Ice Cube directed the "Love Sign" video and Shock G. did remixes of the track, which remain unreleased...

I remember that Dre and his Wreckin Cru used to emulate Prince´s Purple Rain clothes on the album covers of their first two releases. Everybody wanted to be a bit like Prince back then....the sexy, seductive lyrics, the way they dressed, the long curls, the color purple.

The biggest producer over the last 25 years I would say. Is by far the richest man in the music industry after the Beats by Dre/Apple deal. So yeah, don't respect his ass after what he said about New York in "A message to Benedict Arnold" but as a producer he is my favourite up until "The Chronic". Boring record, and not to mention the overrated Doggystyle. He must have some opinion on Prince.

I dont think he sampled IIWYG; Heartz of Men contains the backward masked part of Darling Nikki and another song on same CD samples 777-9311. I think there's another song that samples a guitar solo from Prince but can't remember off top of my head.

Tupac certainly did sample IIWYG. It's the original unreleased version of "Thugz Get Lonely Too". It samples the live version from the SOTT movie rather than the studio version.

Actually there's a few more instances too.

The unreleased Thug Life era song "Is It Cool 2 Fuck?" samples "Get It Up". The unreleased original version of "Pac's Life" has a replayed riff from "Pop Life". And the Digital Underground/Tupac collaboration "Wussup With The Luv" samples "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker". That's in addition to the Heartz Of Men use of Darling Nikki and the 777-9311 sample, which Tupac used for "Whatz Ya Phone #".
