Shooting my next video about it tomorrow. I will talk about some background to its release and review the first 2 tracks.

.

Agree with some of the negativity, Tamar's vocals seem very average and the plastic disc scrtching and drum machines in Love are hilarious.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

3121 feels like a golden era compared to now, if I'm honest.

It seemed like Prince was really getting along with Universal Records.... until he wasn't.

We got:

- A fantastic album
- Awesome lavish videos for Te Amo Corazon and Black Sweat

- A single that actually had commercial appeal outside the fanbase (Black Sweat)

- That smoking hot SNL performance of Fury!
- The golden ticket promotion

- The American Idol performance
- Prince and Tamar on Good Morning America

- The BET Awards performance

- the BRIT AWARDS performance with freakin' Wendy, Lisa and Sheila E!!!!!!
- A movie being filmed.

- A new protege with an album deal (Tamar with the Milk & Honey album)

- Prince hosting those celebrity jam parties at the 3121 house in LA

- Actual promotion from Universal, which led to the album debuting at #1 on the Billboard charts. The listening party I attended was lavish. And the attendees were a "who's who" of UK journalists.

And then....... Prince hit a brick wall with Universal. Tamar's release got cancelled at the last minute (thankfully that Japanese release slipped out!!). And most regrettably, IMO, the 3121 Movie never came out sad

Can you imagine if the Vegas 3121 residency was cross-promoted with the movie coming out?

It really feels as if both Prince and Universal were heavily invested in the success of 3121 as more than just an album. But then, whatever happened, happened. I'd love to know what the sticking point was.

Speaking of promotion, I was in LA not long after the album came out and this is a picture of me in Tower Records (I think it was, could have been a different record store).

I still think that if he promoted a new album the way he promoted 3121 he could score another hit. All it would take is a few music videos, appearances on talkshows and the odd performance at the grammys/MTV awards.

I'm almost glad the movie never came out though, because I'd guess it was crap. Still, would be nice to see it.

The trailer leaked online about 2 years ago and it actually looked fantastic. Prince's people had it pulled down from the net, so not sure if it's still available to stream anywhere.

It was also re-edited with some new footage in 2009 and renamed Lotusflow3r. Again, it was supposed to release, this time on the Lotusflow3r website. Once again, it was pulled at the last minute. I believe fans at the Lotusflow3r launch party in LA got to watch it there.

Dr Funkenberry has seen it. He says it's about Liza Hernandez (her character might be called Lolita) getting an invite to the 3121 house. Also "The Morning After" features in the movie, and there are music videos for "The Word" and "The Dance" in it, with the latter having Prince sit at the piano and perform the song.

The movie was part documentary and part fiction and had some kind of storyline about people working for Prince conspiring to rip him off.

Also, very late in the day, the film was supposed to be released on DVD and Blu-Ray, at least in Europe, with Lotusflow3r. There was an advert that went to print, and then some text had been covered up when the advert was displayed! The covered up text said that there would be a Lotusflow3r DVD and Blu-Ray.

I seen the trailer but it didn't look that good. Then again, it might be one of those movies that's so bad it's good. I'd love to see it though.

Agree totally - If HitnRun Phase 2 was promoted like 3121, it would have been a much larger hit. Okay back in 2006 we did not have Tidal or Spotify, but we still had Itunes, music streaming and MP3 players and by then most music was digital.

.

Its not like it was like 1981 or something, where cassettes were seen as adventurous.

I have also seen the trailer and wasn't impressed. Obviously Prince don't really care about it since it's still not released...

Has anyone realised, that March 21st will be the 10th anniversary of the release of the seminal album 3121. To me this was the big come back that gave us Prince's sanest and consistent album since Emanciptaion or even the Gold Experience. After a decade of sub par albums full of experiments, religious dogma albums and silly NPGMC albums with 2 good tracks and a lot of bad filler, ridiculous bad live albums, slight jazz sets and an assured but very boring "Comeback" album, 3121 was the breath of fresh air which bought the elder statesman of funk role that Prince has to this day.

.

Look at the decades - 1996 - 2005 Decade of experimental and self indulgent music, with only a fewgood tracks

2006 - 2015 Decade of play it safe Prince albums and music, mixed quality, but generally good. The albums get more adventurous with sexualised lyrics becoming more permissive over time. AOA and HNR 2 are full of bedroom R & B.

.

3121 was started in late 2004 at Paisley Park and somewhere called 3121. 3121 is either the combination of shirt numbers on the basketball photo of 1972/73 (They look very mature for 8th graders, unless it was an alternativejunior high school that went to 9th grade, or some of these einsteins were being held back a grade or 2. 6 foot tall guys with moustaches and afros and they are like 13 or 14?

.

The other point is the Psalm 31:21 - "Blessed be God, for he hath rendered wonderful loving kindness to me in a city under stress"

Possibly the city is New Orleans after Katrina as SST/Brand New Orleans was released as a net only single in September 2005, although not the album, it is seen as 3121 era. The royalties of the song were donated to a Katrina relief fund, and physical CD singles were also released with the globe on it.

.

Other singles were Te Amo Corazon in Dec 2005 - the first real single which reached #50 on the Hot 100.

Black Sweat emerged in Feb 2006 and got to #69

Fury was released in Mar 2006 and failed the chart, the song was released after the album on March 21st 2006 as it advertises more about the album.

.

My CD copies of TAC and Fury only have the single song on them!!!

My vinyl copy of Fury has Love as a B side

My vinyl copy of Black Sweat has Beautiful, Loved and Blessed as a B side

.

More about this fabulous album coming soon.

I thought 3121 was the address of the house he was renting in LA. Too lazy to read the original thread.

Brilliant and true post

.

The album was great enough to get me back into Prince, as I had gone cool over the past few years towards him, but hearing that album, wtaching a lot of that stuff on youtube, made me a hardcore fan again and I have not looked back since.

.

Plus quite a few of our younger fans and fans in general actually got into Prince through the 3121 album, it was the most exposed of his recent projects and it sold quite well, because people knew it was good.

.

I always said the song Cream made a Prince fan, but the song Black Sweat made me a hardcore fan all over again.

Also the first 3121 house in L.A. in 2004-05, the first 4 numbers of the address were 3121. He had another house after that which he named 3121 but it was not the house that inspired 3121 and other songs that ended up on the album.

PURPLEIZED3121

As per militants comments it was a really great period BUT I really am not massively keen on the album...love the title track and most work well live but on record some sounded (IMHO) cold. The dance, get on the boat and a few others are gems though. Might give it another spin!
