Take Me With U - can't stand Appolonia's whiny vocals
Cream - irritating, self-satisfied vocals and stupid lyrics
Diamonds&Pearls- totally overproduced and the whole D to the I to the A thing sounds childish
I Would Die 4 U - like the lyrics but not the light-weight, dated music
Life O' The Party - ok, I know it's not that popular but got to say that this track definitely stinks the joint out - sheer embarrassment!

I strongly agree on "Jughead" and "Everyday Is A Winding Road".

Not on "The Arms Of Orion".

Now we're not talking of one of the best P tracks, but I never understood why it is so hated.

It's simply a little pop tune (really nice, if you take it for what it is) composed for a soundtrack album.
I can understand it doesn't meet the musical xpectations of us P loyal-base fans (now but also then), but to me this doesn't qualify it as be so musically bad as it is judged here on the org.

Just my opinion.

I think I've said this before, but for me it's got to be We Can Funk because I've heard all of the versions (I think) and they've all failed to grab me. Everyone else seems to love it, so there must be something I'm missing. I can imagine it being good live, if that helps.

  • Moonbeam Levels. I'm on and off about it. The melody has a lumpy quality to it that I can't stand.
  • The entirety of The Gold Experience and prince. Those records were dated the moment they hit shelves. Prince is a softie and it's really cringey when he tried to play that macho angle in the 90's.

Moonbeam Levels is a big step for Prince, production-wise.
In the pristine version, I mean those background vocals, the reversed shaker mixed right in the front, I can understand it didn't land on 1999, it was already a kind of sound closer to Purple Rain the album.
Don't ask me why, but I hear 1984 Prince singing on ML, not the same guy I hear on 1999.

I have a passion for the way Prince masters the ad lib art, he can repeat the same musical phrase, and add another wave of overdubs with each loop, it's still interesting, if not moving.
In terms of recording and mixing, the ad lib, the bridge, the coda...
Plus, it has that Kate Bush drama (à la Wuthering Heights, maybe less neurotic), Armageddon as a stage, a very feminine way to sing it, he's really trying to push his chest voice to the highest possible before it breaks into falsetto.

The ENTIRETY? Wow, hold on.

What about "Shhh"? It's arguably the best slow jam of the nineties.
I have a dozen of live versions and they're all different, and equally potent.
I have a thing for "Dolphin", it's the only, beautiful in a crazy unconscious way, song about his own paranoia. This is not the cynicism of "Dinner with Delores", this is the last message in a bottle to Warner Bros. "Endorphinmachine" and "Gold" are also too important to get the real Prince picture to be dismissed.

"The Morning Papers", "And God Created Woman", macho angle?

I dunno, the period is too important, this is the second act of Prince's career, it gave us The Sacrifice of Victor, Poor Goo, Lovesign and all that shit, from Poom Poom to Days Of Wild... Crazy times.

I don't know if everyone loves them, but there are 2 P songs that I really dislike being probably in the minority of fans.....

a) Tick Tick Bang

A musical disgrace. Even the 1982 outtake is one of the worst of the era.

b) My Name Is Prince
Unbearable. Lyrics-wise something to shame about, musically a chaos fest in the name of mainstream.

These are the obvious two. But if I think well, probably there are others.

OMG two of my favorite songs from college. Seriously. Tick Tick Bang is top 20 for me. And my name is Prince is dope, especially considering the album its on.

I have to add to this:

I honestly dislike "The Cross". There's just something missing from it. It starts way too soft, and without a remaster, it's just difficult to even listen to. I like that he rocks out, but it's just missing.....something.

I am not a fan of the drummy-last part of "God (instrumental)". It starts great, but the overt drum fills take away from the whole thing. And frankly, the squawking in "God" is just as annoying. I still cringe with tinge of embarrassment when I hear him "blooop pop oooyyeeeee aaahhhhhh" in "God".

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

"Purple Rain"...and pretty much all of the songs off the soundtrack. Heard it so much as a kid that I can't listen to it now....Was never crazy about "Scandlous" or "Insatiable"..."Rasberry Beret"...and I'm going to add "U Got The Look". Like the video but hate the song.

Batdance. I just don't "get it". Besides the guitar solo, where are the good parts in that song?

I'm pretty convinced the song went no.1 off of the Batman movie hype alone.

Why?

It has more funk on it ("DMSR","Lady Cab Driver") and I just think it's a more adventurous album.
