The song made me well up today...not even hearing it...just singing it to mysf in the car. 'Love will always leave u lonely...' It's amazing to me the differences between trash and treasure among people. Threads like this make that stand out and it really amazes me. [Edited 3/22/16 18:57pm]

"Mountains" is up there. It's just incredible.
From the raunchy falsetto to the chest, The Colemans and The Melvoins,
Not to mention the fantastic Atlanta Bliss, Eric Leeds,
the shaker on the one and the fingacymbalz, to the "Uh!" at the very end,
when suddenly!

— OK, merci.

"Mountains" is over the top.
I could drown from Bliss in the 12'' extended coda:
Atlanta Bliss, like some George Harrisson blossoming, shows everyone he's no Eric's sidekick.

That song gets a lot of praise here, but i do not like it either; it's awful for me.

Ewww, that gooey fretless, those compressed whispers, the delay on the voice...

Mmm... Maybe I kinda like the production. But there's no melody, no climax, no devotion in the singing, and plus, it's got "I am" all over.

Yes, Skipper, you R.
Take it easy now. biggrin

I've read orgerz praise "Pheromone".
Boy, what a silly caricature of himself. And that stupid trumpet!
Oh Lawd... Pwah pwah - pwapwapwah!

Come is maybe the album I skip the most.
But the beginning is astounding, the end is a pop gem, and there's Race, Loose! and Papa.

And the horrendous, self-indulgent, even "God" is ashamed of it,
the nauseous "Solo".

And Come, and Space and Dark ?

Wow... it wasn't until this post that I realized how little this song is brought up around here. I don't hate the song, but I remember seeing the video back in the day and thinking, "hoo boy... SOMEbody's feeling a little threatened by Janet Jackson!" lol

Must be someone who listens to them on CD.

We ol'timerz have 3D sonic memories, when the audio chain was still AAA, and none of Skipper's infinitesimal brilliant nuances of production were butchered by the digital incapable at WB (and throughout the world).

Adore, on vynil or K7, is simply Heaven on Earth.
And don't make me quote Belinda Carlisle no mo'!

the nauseous "Solo".

And Come, and Space and Dark ?

- Come
I just said the beginning was astounding! It's "Come" I was referring to. I can tolerate the latter R'n'B mixes, but, meh... The instrumental, near the end, now that's a real achieved musical climax, justifying every second that preceded.

- Space
...gets flushed in record time in my book. I tried. In the grand megalomaniac scheme that was the whole "Experience" (didn't anyone warn Skipper that Hendrix comes to mind when hearing "experience"?) video shot in Paisley Xanadu, it works, like "Pheromone".
But that's precisely the point.
Prince does nothing but a stupid tiny claves riff on a stock sound, there's this FX loop going' behind, it's just air.
Song goes nowhere, has nothing to say, "Love" from "3121" was a much better attempt at make you fly, if this was the intention.
Space is musical void to me.

- Dark
I saw that incredible live performance somewhere on the net, with the fantastic horns ensemble, I think it was basically the same one performing on "The Dance Electric" on the Kimmy Kimmel special...
And so yes, Dark is an extraordinary piece, much better than the praised "Crucial" in the sexy songs category. A gem in the slow repertoire, even "Call My Name" is a classic.

Ooh I almost forgot "Race", which is of course pure genius,
even more so in the "30 Years" version.
Face the music.

Yeah, Come is not bad.
Thinking about it, only 3 songs, and that stupid "Orgasm" (Prince sampling himself is the ultimate proof of a rampant narcissism at this point of his career) don't end on my final track-listing:
- "Space", which has too much of it to put it mildly,
- "Pheromone" because the pwah-wah riff is the most obscene sound in the whole Prince production across the years, but not in a good way, and
- "Solo", because Good Lawd, give the poor boy a rope or som'thin.
Even the depressing beauty of "Letitgo" manages to sound like "Housequake" after that.

Luckily, the best album of that era is alive, and it lives in your own mix of "Come", "Chaos and Disorder", and some of the "Crystal Ball" 4CD set ("— Boooone!", "Hold on to your wigs!"), including parts of "The Truth".
Maybe a little of "The Gold Experience", but only the crème de la crème alors. The shmaltzy Loudness-Wars-Wall-of-Sound make the album tracklist a indivisible piece.

The 4 sides of the"1999" of the ninities exist, they're just scattered over this frantic recording pace Prince was having in his years with Mayte.

Just like with Susannah.

This is a great thread for showing us all how different our tastes are in music. For me space is exactly what it says... Space.. music takes me to

Let's burn him!

DecaturStone, You can't say that, it's as brilliant as "When U Were Mine" and "LRC", it's a fake Christian Country Rock (let's not be unfaithful) hiding a do-wrong woman (she's the one wasting her time trying to get laid with our hero) in the pure mysogynistic Dylan way. You're in the pub since the first phrase, it's cinematic. Could be the sequel of "Raspberry Beret", given the constant use of "she".

I don't know of any other pop song where the man is refusing the lady's advance.
Or "that's a dead end": no friendship possible between us, we'll end up wanting each other.
Just for that...

But then there's the music, especially the long version of the instrumental bridge.
When Prince drops off the overdrive, he's great. We have too little of clean-sound solos.

The live versions were like "Fury", take an already great song and propulse it to the max.
What would be ridiculously over-the-top for other musicians sounds genius with Prince.

I think you're reading it as, "Cause she knew he was going to stay," but it's "gone to stay". So, he's going to stay gone because he's gone for good, which means he's not coming back.

Yup, but so is all "For You", then. Waterdrums, seriously? biggrin

D&P is so flawless in its execution that I gladly surrender to the syrup.
Only Prince has the balls to come up with such heraldic trumpets,
and 15 seconds drum rolls only found in Heavy Metal or Prog Rock.

The verses sound like it's the 1969 Summer of Love, it's a bourgeois hippy song, sounding like jewelry and, like "Gold", stating that jewels don't mean shit.

Anything on The Rainbow Children.

Ending of "Temptation".

"Shy" from The Gold Experience.

"Life Can Be So Nice". It's noise.

"Lemon Crush", "Power Fantasic" - it's just too odd and hollow, yet I love the story of how/when it was recorded, etc. It just sounds unfinished.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
