So you really don´t like The Beautiful Ones, Let´s Go Crazy, Computer Blue?

And you don´t like DMSR? Little Red Corvette?

Seriously?

Why not?

Maybe he´s one of those superhardcorediehard fans who are so hardcore that they simply don´t like what all the casual fans like.

Many people on Prince.org don´t like Purple Rain that much, or rather....they never rank it among their top three albums because they prefer SOTT, ATWIAD, Lovesexy or 1999.....or even Dirty Mind.

Not me though. While I like all the above mentioned albums, Purple Rain will always have a special place in my heart.

I´m an unapologetic, unabashed, unashamed, guilt-free Purple Rain fan. lol

I don't dislike it - I just think it's... 'fine'. I hear people calling this one the ultimate dancefloor workout of all time and, I'm just not there. It's a good song, but I just find it a bit monotonous for eight whole minutes. Put it next to DMSR and there's no contest, in my opinion. cool

I guess, some songs have a "masterpiece" status mainly because of their historical impact.
A little "you had to be there", if you wish.

Hearing EC in 1984, considering the pop landscape, it was revolutionary.
It's "Depeche Mode meets the Commodores".

EC is the first official appearance of Camille. The first appearance of the sped-up guitar. And the first appearance of Sheila E. It's a display of the summer-of-love period effects: flanger, phaser, reversed tape.

As usual, try to listen to it on a good hi-fi system, pump this bass up.

It achieved cult status when it opened the Lovesexy Tour. Prince is a clever man, and the more I think about it, the more I think the whole Black Album fiasco was orchestrated by looking at what the bootleg market did in terms of notoriety for Dylan and Led Zep.

The european crowds, not to mention the hardcore fans, went nuts on "snare drums pounds on 2 and 4", and making EC a kind of post-urban derivative of "Crystal Ball" (the Madhouse machine-gun effects from "16" over the short "Sex Shooter" excerpt) that only served as a psychedelic intro to "Housequake" still is pure genius to me.

Let me praise once again the virtues of Eric Leeds, Atlanta Bliss, that worked their asses off: they're all over the place in this Lovesexy Tour intro, and next they have to frantically blow the "Housequake" riffs. And right after provide the smoothness of Adore, with those loooooong notes. Pheeew.
These guys may stand in pop's history as one of the best minimalistic horns section of all time, along with the latest formation of the Memphis Horns, Wayne Jackson and Andrew Love.

P.S. : To whomever ditched "Adore", let me quote Morris: "I don't wanna see you no more!"

I agree with everything you've said, except the bolded bit. Don't assume I 'wasn't there' because I'm not that excited by EC. I had that 12" on the day of release. I just don't think it's as great as most people seem to, and that's what the thread's all about. cool

Wow, what´s the background story to that picture?

By the way, a female colleague of mine met him at a supermarket in L.A around the time the Thriller album came out. She was spending her gap year in L.A back then and she wasn´t even a big fan but they chatted quite a bit and she said he was quite pleasant and down to earth.

Like I say, I don't remember it but I'm told by my sister, who was only 4 herself, that it was in the summer of 92, which means I was 2 at the time. My mum was a big Michael Jackson fan so my uncle, who was working security on the concert, got us backstage where we met Jackson. We all got pictures with him and one of them, he had me in his arms. I'll be at home again soon so if I find the photographs I'll post them on the Michael Jackson thread.

"Lemon Crush". In actuality, I find the Batman soundtrack to be his weakest effort from the 80's, but that track is especially dreadful.

Likewise, I find most of the tunes on New PowerSoul to be excrement. Everyone seems to love "Until U're In My Arms Again", because of the subject matter, but I just find that song to be an overly-produced, plastic number that undercuts the painful event the song references. I also hear lots of praise for "When U Love Somebody" from this disc...but I cannot fathom why. It's a by-the-numbers, processed sounding bit of plastic pop.

I like the music (the groove) but the lyrics are dumb and lazy smile plus, this song feels totally out of place on the Batman album. It might have worked better on a 'regular' Prince album.

"Lemon Crush" would have worked even better on a "regular" P bootleg of outtakes, in a row with "Mindbliss", "Good Man" and "Your Love Is So Hard".

I don't know how it came up on a released album.

Not really a song I don't like, but the intro of "Eye No" really annoys me. It shouldn't start that way in my opinion. Ingrid's voice gets on my nerves as well. I don't hate her, it's just her voice really shouldn't be the first thing we hear...or at least the first thing I hear in a Prince song.

Otherwise it's a great song on an amazing album!

Word...i love the song, but Ingrid on the intro is corny...i cringe everytime she says ".everybody...everybody knows...when love calls u gotta go..."she almost sounds congested...

Exactly, now I'm beginning to understand all the trash talking about Prince on here lol

Actually, this is a great thread, and interesting responses.

I don't like every last song Prince wrote, but I appreciate that he's challenged himself over and over to claim new ground rather than repeating what he's done in the past. Some of his weaker songs are those where he should have taken a little more time perhaps, or others where he's trying out something new and doesn't quite get it down. The way he's spun out hundreds of songs is really quite amazing, and he doesn't seemt to be done yet.

The song made me well up today...not even hearing it...just singing it to mysf in the car. 'Love will always leave u lonely...'

It's amazing to me the differences between trash and treasure among people. Threads like this make that stand out and it really amazes me.

Ewww, that gooey fretless, those compressed whispers, the delay on the voice...

Mmm... Maybe I kinda like the production. But there's no melody, no climax, no devotion in the singing, and plus, it's got "I am" all over.

Yes, Skipper, you R.
Take it easy now. biggrin

I've read orgerz praise "Pheromone".
Boy, what a silly caricature of himself. And that stupid trumpet!
Oh Lawd... Pwah pwah - pwapwapwah!

Come is maybe the album I skip the most.
But the beginning is astounding, the end is a pop gem, and there's Race, Loose! and Papa.

And the horrendous, self-indulgent, even "God" is ashamed of it,
the nauseous "Solo".
