Tell me all about Rebirth of the Flesh What do y'all know about Rebirth of the Flesh? I listened to it for the first time this morning (for real) and thought it was fantastic. Was this one of the songs that was supposed to be on the first creation of Crystal Ball?

Opening track to Camille, then Crystal Ball.
Only song that remains unreleased from Camille, although there was a live rehersal version released as an mp3 through the 2001 NPGMC. --------------------

'Rebirth Of The Flesh' was recorded late october/
early november 1986. It was one of the first tracks recorded especially for the 'Camille' album. Prince recorded 'If I Was Your Girlfriend', 'Good Love' & 'Rockhard In A Funky Place' at the same time. | |

I guess "Rebirth of The Flesh" signaled the "end of The Revolution" and the beginning of his new band.
This band would later be called by fans as "The Lovesexy Band" Madhouse as well.. Although Sheila is not on this track, she was performing on a track considered to be on "The Flesh" Project in 1986. One of these songs is "Shake Something". [Not "Shake" by Prince and Morris] I think that Sheila left "The Flesh" to tour with Lionel Ritchie. So I think that he was toying around with creating an image for his band depending on who joined. It seems as if he's stating that this band is here to be "purely accomplished players" and not pop stars. This is the band that would be able to handle his pop career and also please those who remebered his underground "Funk" roots. This band could play anywhere: Houseparty or Concert Hall "Let 'em in y'all!" I think that there are also references to former asociates and peers who were dwelling in The Minneapolis Sound of 1999/Purple Rain, and The Time: "We are here, but where are you?" "Everybody Jam to The 'New Boogie-Cool'! Check-it out!" "It's a brand new day. 3-2 Funk ain't in our way. It ain't about the money. We just want to play. The 'Rebirth of The Flesh' is here today! (now)" There also seems to be angry hints for former Time members, and ex-Revolution/Rebel members: "Think about your n---, the 'One' that works so hard... What's his is his. Definitely one of my fave outtakes, if not THE fave...this one seems to be pretty well liked by the fans but I remember reading Uptown's take it (before I had heard it) and it was hardly positive. Not sure of exact words but I seem to remember them saying it was "chaotic nad uninspired"

Do you know what I love about this track? (Apart from the horns and funk itself) - THOSE keyboards. Right at the start of the song, about 20 seconds in.
I don't know how to describe them - they also feature on 'If I Was Your Girlfriend' too. rdhull - help me out! You described them brilliantly, a while back. They give it this really creepy, eerie, 50's B-movie soundtrack vibe to the song. Otherworldly, almost. Love them! | |
