Would you consider Prince a rock artist? Most media outlets call Prince a pop singer, but a lot of his work sounds very rock. "Anna Stesia" and "3 Chain 'O Gold" are examples.
I've always viewed Prince as a rock artist, more so than a pop artist.
Would you consider Prince a rock artist? Or doesn't he fit in any particular genre and is in a genre of his own?

I would say he's in a category of his own .When i use to go to cd stores back in the day he would be labeled as R&B music There's Joy in repetition

I remember seeing Prince in the ALTERNATIVE subcategory at a CD store.
Prince was really all over the place when it came to genre defining (in a good way).

In a sense, I think he approaches the music like one, no matter the genre

I don't think it's fair to catogorise him in any way, he covers many music genres, sometimes even just on single albums.

Agreed! Not just rock. | |

He probably started out as a rock artist when PR was released and he exploded on the scene. I've never understood ITunes genre definitions actually for him and other artists.
Prince is just Prince. You can categorise his albums sure but as an all-rounder I'd just say multi-genre. Nothing generic. "Free URself, B the best that U can B, 3rd Apartment from the Sun, nothing left to fear" Prince Rogers Nelson - Forever in my Life -

Since "rock" evolved out of jazz, blues and soul, gospel and a number of other black musical styles, I would say that he is the epitome of a true rock artist, as he can do everything from blues to gospel to funk to rock.

There is a whole 'thing' about being a Jazz musician, I don't think Prince is a jazz, even though he touches on it.

Sure. He's one of the greatest guitar players ever (in my top five) so why the hell not?
(Just kidding. No, actually I think he's better labeled as a funk/pop artist. Guitar playing doesn't quite define the rock genre, many funk bands have made use of an electric guitar. Plus, Prince doesn't make that much use of electric guitar on his early records.)

He's a Purple Artist
...But seriously, his music is a fusion of many genres that I don't think he can be limited to any one musical genre. His music is so unique and amazing, I feel that he's actually created his own genre.

Good question. I do consider him a Rock artist--among many things. He's Rock, plus dance/pop, r&b, and of course a mix of styles.

Just Prince. I think that's enough.

He does it all but I'd say he's primarily a funk artist. His kick drum is primarily on the one.
