Did any orger see Prince when he open for Rick James on the Fire It Up Tour?

If so what was it like seeing Prince open up for another act in the beginning of his career?

Absolutely,

February 29th 1980 Uptown Theater Chicago, Illinois.

Unbeleivable show although Rick "Bless him" came out making excuses about how OUR fire department wouldn't let him use his pyro. I guess that was his way of conceeding because Prince's show was so powerful and quick. By the time you caught your breath, he was gone. I do remember a lot of people near the front calling Prince "bitchy" (maybe because of the underwear) untill he went into Soft n Wet then the girls screams drowned out the guys. The girls were also screaming Andre's name. By the time they did "Just as Long as were together" where Prince went back and jammed with Fink on the Clavinet and "I wanna be your lover", the boys and girls of Chicago were well won over. Even the idiots screaming bitchy were now Prince fans. When I walked in they had just started the intro and I couldn't help thinking how Prince moved like Mark Fahrner of Grand Funk. We found our seats which were fairly close to the stage (you could do that in those days in a moments notice for $7-$10.50)) and sat through an amazing set. Rick James was totally boring to me after that. Truth be told, I only went to see Prince but I expected so much more from Rick and his crew but they did NOT deliver. I have one picture from that concert with Prince in his Zebra print briefs and I've won so many friendly arguments about how Prince used a Fender Telecaster before he used the Hohner but that's gear head talk. Anyway, yeah I was there.

Yea, sounds like you had a good time. And this was right before Prince about to blow up (becoming a Superstar). He was in my area of Texas but I was 1 and half drive in college and didn't know he was on tour with Rick and didn't they were going to be in Ft Worth. Would have made that trip back in the day. mad biggrin

If this is the only source, what does the video show of the concert?

Oh, sorry I read your post too quick. You mean an audio of the show sourced from video. Then I guess there is really no video circulating from that period... sigh

I did in Savannah, GA. I was the opposite of the earlier poster, I knew next to nothing about Prince at that time, but I was a HUGE Rick James fan. Prince's show was awesome, and I actually bought both of his albums the next day, but to be fair, on that night Rick abosolutely showed him up (he was allowed to use plenty of pyro- I mean A LOT of pyro!) It is one of my favorite, and kind of surreal memories, getting to see an artist like Prince so early on in his career. I also remember how Prince won over parts of the audience that were a little stand-offish at first.
