Its about time but still have little to no respect for this guy...originally claiming he had never heard of The Time....pleasssssseeeeee The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

believe last years episode of crate diggers, Mark Ronson spoke about the time Prince came up to him in the club asking what record he was spinning... Mark praised Prince in the video, also had a 1986 PARADE TOUR GERMANY poster framed in his studio. | |

It was nice that he shouted out Prince and others, including The Meters, in his acceptance speech. I was a little down that Allen Toussaint got such a brief tribute (despite being first in the segment, prior to all of the subjects of each tribute performance) and that evened things out somewhat. | |

That is possible. The song takes as much form other artists as the Time. But people obsessed with the Time and Prince have a hard time seeing that (not saying that is the case for you) |

Prince doesn't need thanks from the likes of Mark Ronson.
he's a rich, posh boy who's daddy bought him a studio and then he ran amok stealing other people's music. Have less than zero time/respect for him.
Uptown Funk was such a blatant rip off (of living in America and many more) that they had to add 5 or 6 additional writers (inc The Gap Band - oops up side your head) to the credits of the song to prevent them getting sued.

the main thing that the song takes from Prince is the use of synths in place of horns. the rhythm guitar is very Princely also but not unique to prince. | |

A great song. Something accessible like that can open kids up to the old skool stuff that it was inspired by. Someone somewhere in the 80s was ripping on Prince for copying James Brown. Theft or homage? Depends on who you ask I Suppose. If the milk turns out to be sour, I aint the kinda pussy to drink it! |

I saw Morris Day and the Time last August here in my hometown. I don't remember the wording but Morris called out Ronson and Mars. It was actually pretty funny. "Hey, I got the butta 4 ya muffin, honey.. I'm just 2 old 2 hold the knife!" | |

A lot of sense this...
Personally though, I found the song very derivative after the second listen.
The thing about Prince is he added to JB and re-interpreted him.
JB added and re-interpreted the likes of Cab Calloway.
This song just seems like a painting by numbers funk song with nothing new added but rather Ronson just deconstructed an earlier Prince or Jam/Lewis production. Nothing new, progressive or edgy that I have identified.
Nevertheless - hopefully it has stimulated a few who have not been exposed to the genre to explore Prince outside of the "Hits", JB, Cab, Brothers Johnson, O'jays etc... ~Shakalaka!~..... ~Mayday!~ | |

I always thought Uptown Funk was a direct rip off from Man's Best Friend by George Clinton....A mashup of the two should be easy to pull off... This is what it's like in the dream factory... |
