Making muziq videos nowadays is a waste of time & money 4 an artist like . He is already worldwide known. Plus his muziq speaks 4 itself. This song becoming a hit is the icing on the cake of an already successful career after almost 40 years in the business. But yet peeps here rarely talk about his accomplishments. Instead focus on his hair. Smh will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. |

Seriously?
I was making a factual & truthful STATEMENT, not looking to imply any sort of mass destruction of music. Your opinion is obviously in the vein of Prince's. That's all well and good. But, the FACT of the matter is; kids today aren't going to Tower Records like we did back in the day. It's ALL about social media and the internet.
The fact that you dismiss the legitimacy of "a billion views" on the internet leads me to believe that you're not entirely up to date with what's going on today.
.
my opinion comes from the point of view that im a musician and dont see why i (or any musician) should feel obligated to give away what i work hard on for free. and whats the legitmicy of a million views? yes, a million people watched you, for free. thats the legitmate truth. yes im up to date on how it works these days, but even if i accept it it doesnt mean im going to make enough money to even finance my next recording. just because things are the way they are doesnt mean its right. except it serves a very different purpose. mtv showed videos that were basically commercials for albums and singles, then people had to go out and buy them because you couldnt carry mtv around in your pocket. with you tube, you can carry it around everywhere you go on your phone, so most people opt for that rather than buying the music. you can even download the audio or the video easily from youtube and have it in a form that doesnt require streaming, again... without paying for it. youtube really only benefits artists who are already huge, which then begs the question of why bother throwing the money at a video, and yes, a very small percentage of lesser known or unknown bands can benefit from it, but not many. Instead focus on his hair. Smh I wouldn't say it's a waste of time. Sure, most people over 30 know Prince. But younger people don't and that's a shame. I was watching a quiz show yesterday called Pointless where the contestants had to name 3 Prince songs that made the top 40 that 100 people they asked before the show didn't know. The contestants only knew 2 Prince songs. Purple Rain and 1999. And none of the 100 people knew of Batdance, ICNTTPOYM, Black Sweat, Glam Slam and countless others. My point is, if Prince did a little more promotion, like a video or two, and allowed them on YouTube, more younger people would be exposed to his music. More record sales = more money for Prince. Yes, Prince has been around for years and he's had great success in the past but from the outside looking in, it seems he's gone out of his way to ensure he will never have that level of success again. Everyone on the org knows of his accomplishments but that's the past. For his own sake, he should take better care of his legacy because at this rate, when he dies (which hopefully won't be for a long time yet) he won't get the Michael Jackson or David Bowie treatment. Instead, 6 months later somebody will read it online and go "Ah, Prince died" To which his son will say "Who?" "He used to be a singer, quite good too, I wonder what happened to him..." And for the record, I like his hair |

knows how to get sales & top 10 albums. Did U 4get the independent release LotusFlow3r that debuted @ number#2 and went gold? With only one retailer Target? He did that! If it wasn't for label politics with Keith Urban. Whose record label fixed his sales . would have debut @ #1...

It may not bring back the masses, but most of my friends don't know who Prince is, and the ones that do couldn't name 5 songs. One friend of mine, who is a (semi)well known singer/actress, thought he was dead. And she's in the music industry! If nothing else, a video would create some awareness that he's still around. And you never know, there's every chance that he could have a surprise hit. I mean, nobody expected Nile Rogers to top the charts but he had a big hit a couple of years ago.

Prince is still a big name in music, you only have to look at the publicity he gets for appearances on awards shows to see that, but his music isn't getting the attention it deserves these days. His work rate is very impressive. 4 albums in 15 months is an achievement in itself. But add up the sales of those 4 albums and combined, they aren't good. 3121 was a big hit. I was one month shy of my 16th birthday when that came out and people in my class in school who up to then didn't really know who Prince was outside of the rumours of him having his rib removed, bought the album because they had seen a video for Black Sweat and liked it. Awareness was created from that video. People's negative perceptions of Prince changed. Now, 1000 Hugs and kisses is a fantastic song with genuine mainstream appeal. Had a video been released for that and promoted, it would have been a success. Same can be said for some of the songs from all 4 recent albums. Again, I'm sure Prince has his reasons, maybe he doesn't enjoy the promotion side of the business, but it's a shame that more people haven't heard his recent output, especially Phase Two, which I would say is his best album in years. |

Nowadays with social media. To me all an artist has to do is just post directly to their fans and that's instant promotion. Maybe feels a video isn't necessary anymore. Yes they do! But U can't make people listen to or buy any music anymore. still knows how to go through the machine and get his albums noticed when he wants them to have worldwide acceptance. He's been in the business going on 40years! Even when he released albums in the 80's not everybody knew about them. Except the diehards. Some of them barely went gold like LoveSexy & Graffiti Bridge.Even though "Kiss" was a big hit! Parade wasn't considered a blockbuster album back then. Only when he went on tour the casual fans would go see him. Because of his reputation as a artist that delivered on stage. But none of them knew about his legendary aftershows or at the spare of the moment HitnRun shows. Only the diehards. It's really no different now.
has always been a underground/superstar artist. He knows what to do get the attention of the masses who doesn't know anything after Purple Rain. Then turn around and cater to just his diehards who know about every 39th album he released. will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! When have you ever been able to make people buy or listen to music? The whole point of commercializing art is convincing people that your product is strong and entertaining enough for people do do so. Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain. |

My daughter is 15 and an avid music fan. I asked her about this topic. When she hears a song on the radio that she likes, she pulls out the cellphone and "Shazams" it to see who it is.
Then it's off to YouTube to see the video. THEN she will Spotify or Soundcloud the song. Since she doesn't have iTunes, if she likes it enough, she buys the song RIGHT THROUGH THE LINK ON YOUTUBE.
Yes, that's right. You can buy music right off of Youtube.
Imagine that.
The fact that Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber are still making tons of money by promoting music the way that this generation listens/views/buys it means that IT WORKS.
...albeit not for everyone.

I think Prince started that whole thing with Sign O' the Times. Damn. That was pretty unusual back then. And it only added power to the song. Imagine how easy it would have been to just add images to the words. "Hurricane Annie ripped the ceiling off a church" coupled with images of a hurricane. That would be so boring and ruin the song. The idea of NOT doing that and just show the words was perfect.
Bob Dylan would raise an eyebrow or two reading that and then would fire up the dusty old projector and show you his video of the 1965 song Subterranean Homeslick Blues. Or he might just send you a link to this

My 10yo and her friends get all her music from the YouTubes. Prince is completely invisible to them. I am confident she is the only one in her whole grade (of 90 kids) who actually knows who Prince is and knows a few songs. My partner blames me. |
