America Extended Version

Any love for this gem that should've been a standard club banger in the 80's?!! Dance! Dance! Then revolution!

I so LOVE LOVE LOVE the extended version! I don't care what anyone else says. One of my absolute favorites to get spring cleaning turned into a marathon dance jam... lol

It's a gem and probably the best demonstration we have on record that The Revolution were tight as fuck. I don't see it so much as a dance jam though, it has a lot of psychedelia, I like to sit and listen to it carefully: so much happens during those minutes!

It's undoubtly a great version, but a little too much long for me.

Rare times I listen to it entirely. The same happens with the "I Would die 4 U" mix.

I remember getting that in early 1986 - it took a little while to get imports in those days.

.

This is certainly one I played to death.

.

However, when I first bought this, I had a misspress and so I had to wait ages for another import to arrive.

.

The label had been printed on the actual grooves so it couldn't be played.

.

I always thought it was amazing that the front and rear artwork on all of the singles from ATWIAD where crops from the album artwork.

.

lol lol lol lol

I did it in the past, and I really appreciated it at the time.

Just to be clear, I'm not sayin' it is not a worthy releases. Not at all, it is a great 12".

But this doesn't detract from the fact that this is one of the P mixes to which I return the less, after all these years.

Differently, the 10 minutes version of "Mountains" is something that put me on a trip anytime, to say.

13min of the song is wild n loose then it mellows out with some flute keyboard soloing -I believe that is Lisa, she used that sound, and it's wonderful, but I think if Prince had some kind of chantish poetry going on through to the end something like on the extended version of Girl or that All the Critics Love U in NY talk, then the rest of the song would have everyones attention throught the 21 min

Do you think it's after that 13min mark where it mellows off that you loose interest?

Paisley Park might have a lot of psychedelia, but I don't get that from America, it's a straight up rock/funk jam to me

I think there are a lot of demonstration they were tight as fuck on record though

I agree, you have to sit and listen to these songs carefully, turn them up on speakers, go for a drive specifically to listen to the songs, and get some good headphones sit back and hear everything that is happening, because there is a lot of stuff happening on this album and this song in particular

I meant the keys on the last 5 to 10 minutes. It's no typical funk and it's very atmospheric. The jam doesn't slow down but it feels like it does, it's pretty amazing, a total change of mood.

Definitely too long for my tastes. Like IWD4U, I don't have 20 minutes to waste on this.
It's OK when you're fourteen, maybe.

But I'm more than thankful for the extended version of "Girl",

which is a unique piece in Skipper's repertoire :
It has a vocal solo, instead of a guitar one.
It has fingersnaps.
It has sweaty hands.

The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter
No Child's a failure
Until the Blue Sailboat sails him away from his dreams
Don't Ever Lose, Don't Ever Lose
Don't Ever Lose Your Dreams

This is just my opinion/speculation. I think it wasn't that big of a club hit is because of the length, and it is not a traditional "dance track." We, the Prince fans loved it, because, well, it's Prince doing an extended jam. We're used to being taken away by a long jam showing off his skills. He "trained" us, in a way. I don't listen to it a lot, and when I do, it's mainly background music.

Not clear why it would get much play at the clubs, but the rythym is incredible for gym workouts or long bike rides; keeps the cyclling cadence up perfectly and just makes the time fly by.

More Extended versions please! Like "Hello", "P Control," "Screwdriver," "Marz" are all deserving of 20min instrumental and lyric extensions.

It's a nice track, a bit too repetitive for 20 minutes.

But one time i indeed sat down, and put headphones on, to listen if there were more layers in it.

but then i got annoyed by the tamborine, which is out of sync with the band many many times.

since then....all i hear is that annoying tamborine.

no more headphones for me, for that version sad

As far as I know and remember, "Black Archives" contains the full mix without any edit (also Discogs show the track lenght at 21:46).
