With Prince it has to.
What I don't understand is how he can see his music exclusively in financial terms. I have bought a lot of his music more than once (different formats et cetera) because music to me means a lot more than the money I pay for it. So how can it be that for him, the guy that wrote the music, is just about the money?
Does his music have no other value for him? Doesn't he want his legacy to be well known and well preserved? It just doesn't make sense!

people always harping about me due to my distribution and sales posts... well... this is what we get...

prince will NEVER have remastered or re issue deluxe releases as long as he is alive. he keeps wanting more and more money for a fan base that is basically non existant anymore in terms of people BUYING his works...

look at what's happening with pHASE 2 distribution.

Yep - let the reissue/remaster blah blah blah start again. Prince will never be happy - does he not realise ha aint ruling the charts anymore - hes not as relevant as he once was. delusion is a bitter tasting pill!!!!

The guy will continue to sit on his decreasing-in-value-as-the-years-go-by catalog just beacause it isn't 1984 anymore, therefore WB won't give him $10 million upfront for it. I wish what I just typed was a joke...

well we dont know the details, but Princes paranoia about how much he and his music is worth is a disappointing trate he has. But running Paisley Park must be expensive so maybe he is just fighting for every penny to keep things together.

decreasing value is an understatement, he can't even get a proper distribution for an album... an artist of his stature only sells less than 10,000 of his latest cd? that's crazy. he killed all his visibility in social media youtube, etc. in this digital age. it's crazy... he wants millions, does he realize how low his fanbase is now? look at his last 3 album sales how low they r.

His last 3 albums are the worst selling in his entire career, with PHASE 1 selling a mere 10,000 copies (i've seen indie artists that sold better). What does that tell record companies? That he's not worth their time. He want's millions? He can't even get his diehards to come out and support him. Which is ironic since PHASE 1 is his biggest commercial sellout album ever, designed specifically to attract younger audiences (remember the dancing kids ad?) . With no music on YouTube and embedding it on a shit streaming service that has as much real suscribers as PHASE 1 had sales, he's doing a real good job at bringing in younger audiences who are probaby surprised he's even alive (trust me, most people I try to turn on to Prince say this alot), let alone making music.

exactly. but don't tell the fams that... they'll say youtube doesn't generate album sales... they'll say buying our records instead of streaming is the way to go... they'll say no it's all record sales that are going down and that are low now a days... they'll say, he can get a proper distribution deal if he wants...

He said in reality, PRINCE probably had more artistic freedom than any other artist signed to a label.

The moment I saw that link about vinyl reissues I knew it wasn't going to happen.

.

And this shouldn't be a surprise. We're talking about an artist who has a song called "1999" and somehow completely fucked up getting a massive hit out of that when 1999 came around. His own idiotic incompetence and stubbornness is the cause of so much of his problems.

.

He could be swimming in money if he wasn't so goddamn obsessed with imagining slights all over the place. The word "compromise" seems alien to him.

There's "something" about having a "Side A" & "Side B" to the experience of a Prince album Beginning the 2nd half of the experience with a "Mountains", a "U Got The Look"; or ending Side A with "Anna Stesia" was too cool. CD's have created a different sequencing notion that isn't as good smile

True, true and true. And one more thing: I can never listen to all the 500gb of music I have as MP3s etc. These days, filling up a hard drive with music is easier than chewing and digesting the music. I prefer less music, so I can listen to one record over and over. Side A and Side B segregates the listening experience and makes it more digestible, like the intermission in a movie theatre. I wonder how many of us who buy so-called deluxe editions (2 or 3 discs of outtakes) on itunes etc actually listen to all 34 songs in one go. It's impossible.

How does Prince go from debuting @ #1 with "3121" to selling only 10,000 copies TOTAL of "Phase One" within 10 years??

-Sub-par music?

-inaccessibility?

-media games?

-poor promotion?

-just gotten "old"?

-not keeping up with the times with technology?

-not giving the fan base what they want? (vault/reissues?)

-not showing any fondness to his past? (this is where he differs from other nostalgia acts, and seems less 'human')

I think it was the Rolling Stone 1994 review of "Come" that said to "appreciate the album as the greatest career-derailment since" something or ever.

Really, everything since "3121"
has been a slow-motion career derailment.

Such a shame, because "Phase 2" is terrific- he has all the talent he's ever had- but he's really screwed up goodwill from record labels and record buyers.

But Prince has already made the agreement with WB. They shook hands and issued a press release telling fans what to expect as a result of said agreement. Many of us fans were more than satisfied with what was divulged. Why is Prince complaining now?

“Here’s the remaster……however, I’d like to renegotiate the terms of our past agreement. If you want this, it will cost more money than what we agreed previously…………..”

IMO, this is a very childlike way of handling a multi-million dollar deal.

However, I must be fair and say that this may not be entirely on P. Then again, where there’s smoke and tweets………..

What about those of us with those horrible new players that can play 180gsm records. A lot of the USB capable type record players have this problem. Mine cost $200, but found out it was a cheap piece of Chinese crap that can only really play pre 1982 records and 45s.

One word: UPGRADE biggrin biggrin biggrin If you have a good stereo, you will hear a hell of a difference with a good record player vs these crappy MP3-converters.

I still play my old vinyls, sound in many cases so much better than the resprective CDs (remark to the poster above re keeping the vinyl in mint condition - you are missing out smile )

In all honestry, I'm glad these vinyl re-issues are not happening. I have all of the original vinyl in mint condition. I have loads of vinyl, do I need more - NO. Do I really need these - NO. Will these enhance my life - NO. Would I buy these just because I am a collector - YES. Am I glad I am now saving money - YES. Has Prince kicked himself in the arse - YES yet again and again!

I totally agree!

.

Most people don't realise that the master used for Vinyl is a different master used for CD - hence they sound different, but with Vinyl sounding more true to what is heard in the recording studio - that is ultimately what is trying to be achieved. So in fact, when people list to compressed mp3 files, it's like listening to a band play in a recording studio but the listener is trying to listen from 10 blocks away with their ear pressed against a brick wall!

I ask this because it came with a stunning full sized booklet that replicated the CD booklet. This is worth it just for that!

Well one thing for sure is that Prince will never get satisfied until everything is 100% on his terms, he will never get along with WB.

If a contract was finalized between WB and Prince and either party were not performing what they agreed upon, the other side would sue. You can't just breach a contract without penalty because you want to renegotiate terms.

Soooo, if Prince is saying WB aren't meeting his price, it mustn't have been specified in the original agreement. There is no way WB wouldn't sue Prince if he breached specific payment terms of the original contract.

It is amazing to me that any one of us wouldn't take a job or sell something to someone if it didn't meet our price, but Prince should take whatever is offered. If the price isn't what he feels is acceptable, he shouldn't take it. That doesn't mean he's only about money, that means he's not willing to accept less than what he feels his product is worth. It doesn't matter the true worth, it's his product.
