Develop the big balls to demand creative control while still an inexperienced teenager without a recording contract.

Not allowing Verdine White to produce his music. (Nothing personal against Mr. White, who is one of my favorite bass players).

Taking the can't be bothered with these inane questions attitude about Dick Clark's interrogation on American Bandstand. evillol

Three words: Cavallo, Ruffalo & Fargnoli.

Advancing synthesizers more than anyone since Stevie.

Create the 1999 album. mr.green

Decide the Hohner Telecaster with the leopard skin pick guard would be his one mainstay axe throughout his career. worship

Make it impossible for Black radio to ignore his outright hard rockiness when most of these stations would ignore other Black rockers.

Wear the black suede boots in the 1999 video. headbang

Having the keen sense of timing to get the Purple Rain movie released when it was.

Taking the bassline out of "Doves" and getting WB to release it as a single.

Not batting an eye, changing, or attending the PMRC hearings while Tipper & Co. got their panties in a bunch by making him their whipping boy. (Thank God for Frank Zappa!)

Not allowing the previous year's hype to box him into a Purple Rain part II box and moving on to other things.

Not performing 1999 for the eMpTV music awards a few years ago.

Taking the high road by not responding while Rick James publicly throws an envious, never-ending, tantrum about him for 20+ years now. (And even if he did, it would still be understandable.)

Becoming passionate about his work again after years of flashes of brilliance and cruise control.

Not letting Najee turn his music into syrupy shlock.

Hire John Blackwell as his drummer for recordings AND live gigs.

Keeping his gotta know what's going on every hour of everyday when you're this quiet type of fans on edge by maintaining privacy on his own terms.

Pissing off scary, irrational fanatics who don't think they're scary, irrational fanatics. evillol

Great list. I would like to add not recording the song I Bad with Micheal Jackson.

The smartest thing Prince has ever done is live his dreams in his own way and be true to himself. And tell the press to fuck off.

I'm not too sure about that. Besides the financial problems one could also argue that changing venues would have provided some freshness to his music. It could be just coincidence, but I don't think he recorded too many great albums at Paisley. His sound became very stale after the first two.

I'm not sure I agree but that's a really interesting point of view.

I don't know about that. He could have just built a smaller more personal studio on his own estate.
Paisley Park Enterprises was didn't live up to anywhere near its potential and has been kind of a business disaster since it was built.

I would say the smartest thing he did
was take the keys to the recording studio
out of Moon's hand when he was a kid.

The smartest thing he ever did was to pick up a guitar.

After that, yeah, insisting on being writer/producer of all of his work, from day one. Good move.

But it was all downhill from there. evillol Just kidding.

Smartest: Making Purple Rain.

Dumbest: Making Graffiti Bridge and calling it a sequel to Purple Rain!
"So strange that no one stayed at the end of the Parade..." - Wendy & Lisa's "Song About" on their 1987 self-titled album.
