Favorite Emancipation Disc

I've been playing the second disc nonstop these last few days. Love all the ballads!

It's hard to choose cause I feel like the three discs have different moods to them. I used to LOVE the second disc, but now I'm feeling the first disc. Right Back Here In My Arms reminds me of Andre 3000 for some reason lol and I love it! I would actually say the first disc minus We Gets Up is absolutely fantastic. biggrin

Disc 2 is the one I return to most.

Another Orger mentioned how great Prince sounds on all of this album in a thread a few weeks ago and it makes me want to dedicate more listening time soon.

Disc 2 = favorite, a lot of nice slow jams. Upbeat/mid-tempo songs are also pretty good. This would've made a nice single disc release.
.
.
Disc 3 = pretty decent, some interesting attempts at techno/house, The Love We Make is powerful
.
.

.
.
Disc 1 = mostly awful. JoTY competes with Million $ Show for worst opener to a Prince album. We Gets Up - no, no, and no. Right Back Here in My Arms and In this Bed Eye Scream are keepers. The rest is just not my cup of tea.

Disk 2 is near perfect. The whole album has aged very well.

I have a lot of love for these discs. Hard to pick a favourite though. For me, disc 1 is the weakest of the bunch, but still some solid songs, like In This Bed I Scream and Somebody's Somebody. Discs 2 & 3 are very different from each other and more experimental than the first disc imo. Some days I prefer disc 2, some days I prefer disc 3. It's a toughie.

The creativity and playfulness on this album is a large reason why I fell in love with Princes music.

Joint 2 Joint is my jam.

All three discs at least one not so great song but disc one has the most (We Gets Up, Get Your Groove On, Courtin´ Time, Damned If I Do .....those are songs that I find unlistenable) . Disc 2 is pretty good and there´s no song on it that I skip, disc 3 is alright, too , even though I never listen to New World.

All in all, I still like this album and I think it´s much better than its reputation. It could have been soooooo much better though if he had not disbanded the original NPG. The difference in sound can´t be denied when you listen to songs where he´s used the NPG (like Betcha By Golly Wow....I know many hate his coverversion but I quite like it, and it sounds very strong and bombastic....tight and loud sound....I don´t think he should put cover versions on his own albums but this one at least sounds pretty good).

I even don´t mind Da Da Da...guess I am the only one.

But I simply cannot listen to We Gets Up, Courtin Time and Damned If I Do, Get Your Groove On and Jam of the Year.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I love that big grab-bag of music called Emancipation. I hear so many on the Org pan the majority of it, and I wonder if this could be for its lack of rock tunes. I have my not-so-favorites among the songs, too, but it IS a big collection, after all. Anyway, Disc 2 is my favorite of the trio. To me it is exactly perfect the way it is sequenced, there is a narrative prettily woven in there--such a beuatiful love tribute. I always want to turn the volume UP to enjoy when it is on.

DFUNK

To me, Emancipation is a good 3 disc album that could have been trimmed down to a 1 disc brilliant album.

It's really hard for me to pick a favourite disc, but I will say that The Holy River is in my honest opinion one of the best songs Prince has done...ever. I put it as a career highlight for him, it is criminal it didn't get more attention when it was released as a single.

Initially it was disc 3 because I like the funky stuff but over time I enjoy disc 2 the most. I've already mashed the whole triple album into one disc so I don't think I've listened to any of the discs all teh way through for 15 years.

I have not really a favourite. I use them as costers. If I drink a beer it is the most funkiest thing on it.

Disc 2 has the the most great material on it. There are great songs on discs 1 and 3, but there is a lot of filler as well. I'd have to go with Disc 1 being in second place and Disc 3 last.

Disc 2 is nearly perfect, so I'd say that one. Swap Emale and FLSMW for In This Bed and Love We Make, and it is actually perfect (to these ears biggrin).

It's a great album!

Sadly you can't please everyone.

Prince does a 3-disc set and people cry for a one disc version. Prince does a 1-disc album and people cry for a 3-disc expanded version with tracks from the same sessions.

Prince should keep doing what he does!

I certainly re-visit disc 2 mostly, but there are awesome tracks across all 3 discs.

lol lol lol lol

People spend 30 bucks a piece on dozens of poor sound quality rehearsal bootlegs that feature 7 similar takes of a same songs or 45 minutes long repetitive jams, then cry they've been ripped-off when Prince puts a crystal clear sounding 15 minutes version of Cloreen Bacon Skin on CB lol

Yeah... some people will complain no matter what rolleyes

The only reason I ever complained about Emancipation, was because it was 3 discs full of 2nd rate R&B bullshit.

Had it been 3 discs of 2nd rate Prince fillers like the previous albums released years earlier, I wouldve been a pretty happy customer.

I for one personally believe it's a masterpiece and one of P's best albums, and I could actually try to back this up or at least offer a reasonable argument in favor of that, if I was in the mood to write an essay about Emancipation (but I'm not coz it'd take an hour, and I'm hungry and I have 30 minutes of cooking ahead of me before I can eat, and then I want to do other things).

Maybe u don't like Emancipation, I'm cool with that, but don't confuse what you perceive with what is and make absolute statements like that.

Whichever has The Love We Make on it. One of my favorite Prince tracks of all time.
