They are. Only a snob would say he has not written a single good song these past few years. AOA is solid, give or take a track or two, PLEL is deeply flawed but has a couple of good tracks. At least a third of the tracks on hit n run 1 are excellent, and the latest opus has excellent material as well.

Prince is much better when you "surrender ur xpectations." I spent probably more than a decade thinking that the best was yet to come, and then it never did. Then I realized that it doesn't need to. He's given us enough. There has been plenty to enjoy over the years, and also stuff that I don't really like, often coexisting on the same album (Black Muse coexisting with Screwdriver for example). It's par for the course when you're dealing with a diverse artist like Prince. "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide."

I kind of agree with the sentiment of OP's statement. Prince, was always mostly a sloppy and quirky songwriter. A lot of time sex saved a song that might otherwise have been easily forgettable. He was just as dramatic and unstable in the early to mid 80's as he is today. I don't think a lot has actually changed except he's perhaps even more self-indulgent and a bit sloppy. Social media just makes it all too easy for him to weird out publicly where before he had to call a press conference to vent his bullshit and even then the media would edit him down to present a more flattering view of his state of mind. I think Tidal is the perfect place for him to release his new music. Hopefully all his physical releases will be vinyl only going forward for a while, and he doesn't have to worry about the embarassment of low sales. The audience for vinyl is more sophisticated, imo, and might appreciate Prince's mature songwriting style.
