Just discovered this one, thanks 2 JabarR74

For every night that you've been gone
I've lit a candle
There must be 99 around my bed
Around my bed
Lying awake all night long tears in vain
Sometimes I think that I'd be better off dead
Being without you is murder, baby

Get in a taxi, subway train
Don't make me cry these tears in vain, baby
A hundred nights without you is murder baby
A 101 just won't do, no

Why do I cry for you?
You probably found someone new
And no one deserves ya, I say
No one deserves ya like I do
Baby, you know it's true
Ooh, what we had you said was meant to be

If that was true, tell me, why'd you leave?
Baby, I wanna know
I'm sick of, I'm sick of, I'm sick of
Crying these tears in vain, baby

Why don't cha get in a taxi, subway train?
I'm going mad, baby
I'm going insane, baby, don't cha know?
101 just won't do, no, no, listen

Nothing on TV, my girlfriends bore me
They try to please me but I need you, baby
You and me, need to be together
Together physically
Why can't you come see about me?
Why can't you come see about me?

You've got to get in a taxi, subway train
Don't make me cry these tears in vain, baby
A hundred nights without you is murder, baby
A 101 just won't do, no, no just won't do

I'm in the funk, I'm in deep
You got to come, baby, see about me
That 101 just won't do

101 is the eighth track on Sheena Easton's ninth album The Lover In Me, and, eight months after the album's release, 101 was released as the album's third single. 101 was written and produced by Prince (credited as Joey Coco).

Initial tracking took place on 10 January, 1987 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA (four days before Jaguar).

In a 2012 interview, Sheena Easton discussed the song's recording:
"When you work with Prince, he's one of those kind of guys that likes to keep you off guard. You'd get the phone call saying 'Hey, come down to the studio. There's something I'd want you to hear.' Then you'd get down there, like with 101 and he'd play it and I'd be like, 'I don't know' and he'd say, 'Well, just go and sit and listen to it a little bit.' I'd go and he'd come right in and say, 'Let's go.' 'But I don't know it completely,' [I'd say]. 'Well just sing what you know, then,' [he'd say]. There's this part in there where I kinda go off-melody and I just start taking higher and higher and he says, 'Well, that's not the right melody but we're keeping that and we're gonna work with that.' And so it's one of those things that's really organic - just a great moment in the studio. Plus I like the production. I love the subway doors opening and closing. He wanted it to be very haunting, and to just be about the desperation in the voice - [and] about the concept of you being away from this person for forever, it seems, and you just can't bear it for one more night."

In the same interview, she declared that: "of all my songs I've ever done, that's my favorite."

"101" is a superb song.....haunting and moody.....Sheena's vocals and the music totally captures the heartbreak and desperation that the song suggests.

This entire album is excellent.....a perfect, late 80s dance/pop/R&B album. In addition to the two Prince-produced tracks, which are great, the album also contains several songs written and produced by LA and Babyface, who were suddenly the hottest production duo on the scene.I recall being very pissed with People magazine's harsh review of the album,in which they wrote

anyone who likes to see Maseratis used to ploy snow,or filet mignon ground into hamburger, may like this record...in which Sheena does a convincing imitation of a fourth-rate R&B singer mad

Apparently, some critics wanted Sheena to keep on doing light, adult contemporary stuff like "For Your Eyes Only".When she decided to go 'pop' and become a little more daring and funky, they criticized her.

That's nice. I remember a little of something you posted that they had met in the studio and basically, Prince was like, Don't you need to warm up or something? And she was like, I got this! It was funny.
What?

Get in a taxi, SUBWAY TRAIN
Don't make me cry these tears in vain, baby

A 101 just won't do, no

Plus I like the production. I love the subway doors opening and closing.

.

In all these years, never noticed all the "Morning Train" references in this song... very funny. Sounds like Prince's dry humor.

One of the best songs he has made for another pop star. I loved listening to the insturmental version as well (the b-side of the cassette).

Just heard Cool Love in addition to this thread. Quirky sounds throughout the song, unique little gem. Brilliant guitar playing (of course when it comes to Prince I should add).

^^as much as I love "101",I think "Cool Love" should have been the single instead music that song is sexy and alot of fun. It's the more commercial-sounding track...very radio-friendly and catchy.

pardon me boy,did you say that you were leaving

I hope this reason's better than the one you gave before

I only discovered this mix just over a year ago, it's absolutely astounding! Up there with the very, very best he's ever done.

I loved the original mix and original instrumental mix (only on the casette?) so much more back when I bought this 12" vinyl. But... I'll have to check it out again, if I can find it.

I have to strongly disagree. All of the late 80's early 90's generic club mixes take unique Prince stuff like 101 or the The Future and turn them into the most generic pieces of club crap ever created. It's like take alway EVERYTHING that made these tracks unique and strip them bare of every delicious thing about them and make them sound like every fucking piece of shit club track that shep petibone or whomever ever made.

Ok sorry about the rant. I just had to get that out of my system.

Hey now! I tend to agree, Prince's remixes in the late 80s were homogenized compared to the extended jams we all love. That's the nature of the genre.. 140bpm don't mix w/90bpm. But Shep? He innovated the underground freestyle, latin sound. Not his fault it became marketable. Take away Shep and you would lose a lot of 80s hits, artists: Pet Shop Boys, Thompson Twins, Nu Schooz, Janet Jackson, Madonna... DISCOGRAPHY

I know Shep is a disco cats and boots legend like William Orbit. What I'm saying is that tracks like 101 and The Future are completely driven by specific beat signatures. These signatures are the BASIS and driving force behind these tracks. On 101 it's a simple mechanical droning that builds tension as the lyrics and singing gets more and more emotional until all the elements coalesce. The beat, beeps, keyboard loops, vocals all come together to form a dense soundscape that continues to build and build until the final climax. So to see that, the main function of the composition replaced by a generic cats and boots beat that goes nowhere? Who would do that? It completely destroys the emphasis and reason for the track to exist.

It's like taking Bob George or When Doves Cry or The Glamorous Life and replacing their unique beats signatures and basis for their compositions and see replaced with boots and cats.

The cats and boots beats work great for a Madonna remix where the beats are generic to begin with, it works with most mainstream tracks, but to do that to 101 or The Future? Gtfoh

I would agree about the Morales remix, but Prince's Uptown Version I find pretty great.

And about Pettibone: I do like his Glam Slam remix..

The Uptown Remix sounds to me like Prince just finished the song, not tried to make a new song or dance track via a remix.
