Live reaction to Capitol Theater concert from Jan 30, 1982

I am watching this for the first time. Started with Second Coming/Uptown, then Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad (with a segue that sounded like a bit from Batdance btw), now he's on I Wanna Be Your Lover. This concert is so killer! The moves, the facial expressions, Dez! I'm going to react as I see fit as I watch live. OH SHIT! HEAD JUST STARTED!

Very telling that during the chorus of head Dez points to his actual head when saying the word "head". No joke.

Ok, I knew Prince was nasty. But I was too young to be privy to this Prince and this concert. I was 5 when this concert happened. Did he really just jerk his guitar off at the end of Head, come with the music, make the nastiest fuck face I have ever seen, then go right into Dirty Mind?!

Holy shit. He is so bad. Prince is bad. In the words of Run DMC, "Not bad meaning bad but bad meaning good."

1999 wasn't out yet. Purple Rain was nothing but an idea, maybe. And yet his first 5 songs are:
"Uptown"
"Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad"
"Head"
"Dirty Mind"
"Do Me Baby"
He could have quit that year and toured with the 4 albums he had up to that point and could have been fine. Such a genius.

Btw, Do Me Baby is sung to perfection on this tour. Goes to show how strong a vocalist he is.

Controversy never sounded funkier. A lil mo uptempo than the original version. Stanky. Funky. Nasty.

"Let's Work", another example of why the Controversy album is in my top 3. To hear this live is joy.
I love how free he looks performing this song. He's got this backless shirt that makes him look so pervy. If a marketing team built this image they deserve an award. If this image was all Prince, he's more genius than I already thought.

There is a doughy white guy with a mustache and skinny tie front and center just going off the entire concert, but you see him in the middle of lets work again jumping around. Lmfao!

His first encore is "Jack U Off".
Some thoughts: I've never heard this live, so this is awesome.
This would never be performed live now so I love it even more.
Dez doesn't say the whole line during the chorus. He says "Jack..." Watch closely.
No "Sexuality" so far. And that's my favorite song from the album.

And that's it. Ova. At the end he asks"If anybody asks you who you belong to, who do you say?" Referencing "Private Joy", which makes me sad because that is another classic from that album that he didn't perform. This concert was the shit. The only thing I would want more of are more cuts from the Controversy album. And the general feeling I got was that Prince was waaayyyyy nastier in 82 than I had ever seen him. If you see this concert and watch the part where he interacts with his guitar at the end of "Head", it looks like it was a scene from a porno. It's bad ass. Prince was also enjoying himself so much on stage. You can tell he loved performing these songs and that he knew exactly what he was doing to his audience. Every bass stab and body movement was him basically fucking us. And the audience loved it. Oh to have a time machine to take me to that night.

Spanky out.

The Time concert from that same night. They must have opened for Prince that night. "The Stick" is my favorite Time song and it's what they open with. DAMN!
Can u imagine Prince hearing this in his dressing room knowing that he wrote this shit and a funky band is opening his concert with it?

"Dance To The Beat" is the Time's second song. Sounds like "Jack U Off"
The "Somebody bring me a mirror" bit was done during The Stick. Purple rain worked as a film so well because these personas were perfected for 2 years before filming. So good. Dead on. All of it. It makes me apreciate Prince's vision. Prince is compared to Stevie Wonder a lot, but He's more like Steve Jobs. He saw exactly what he wanted and where he wanted to go and just worked his ass off to achieve it. And he knew it would all be commercial just like Steve.

Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and Jesse Johnson where all on this tour and prominitely featured on this video concert. Which means they played "The Stick" and "Get It Up" night after night across America. Listen to those two songs and the listen to Janet Jackson's "Control" album (Jimmy and Terry's "first album") and Jesse Johnson's "Review" and tell me they don't owe Prince royalties on those records. Prince truly influenced any and all R&B, Funk, and Pop records that came out after 1982. And you can still hear it in records as recent as The Weekends "I can't feel my face". It's like Prince was Jesus and the Time were his disciples spreading the funk. And it has traveled all this time and is still alive today.

I love that after Cool everyone was going crazy for The Time not knowing that all those songs where just Prince and Morris jamming on songs Prince wrote so The Time was kind of a Prince cover band for Prince songs you had never known were Prince songs.

Eye wish prince NEVER did the whole movie star Purple Rain project. He didn't need to with this talent. Only good thing came out of it was the funding 4 Paisley Park. He was so much more in his element during this "Controversy" period.

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

Dez was beginning to feel uncomfortable about the sexual content of Prince's lyrics, so he didn't want to sing them. It's one of the reasons he left.

--- I have been saying this for years on this board. You can still hear his influence in popular music today despite all of the nonsense that he is not relavant.
