Why is everyone dissing Emancipation at the moment?

I don't think it's his best either, but it's still a great album. I think that because it's 7 years old now it's suffering the "is it new, is it old" syndrome (if that makes any sense). I wasn't a Prince fan when it came out and was wondering whether it was well recieved back then?

There are gems there. There are also some ploppy turds.

Gems:
Somebody's Somebody
Sex in the Summer
Joint 2 Joint
Dreamin' About U
The Love We Make
The Holy River
Sleep Around

c'mon now...

Throw out the overproduced drums and put John Blackwell on every track instead and this album could've been hellsapoppin.

I LOVE THE EMANCIPATION ALBUM!! I'M NOT CRAZY ABOUT EVERY SINGLE TRACK, BUT I'M GLAD PRINCE RELEASED IT! MY FAVES ARE JOINT 2 JOINT & JUST ABOUT EVEY TRC ON CD 2, 'MR HAPPY, GET YO GROOVE ON, AND MOST OF CD 3.THE ALBUM COULD HAVE BEEN UNBELIEVABLE WITH JOHN BLACKWELL ON DA STICKS!

Take the strongest tracks of each cd, compile them onto a single album and you STILL would have a pretty lame LP.

I just saw Emancipation at "VanLeest" for 7.99 euros. A lot
of his other albums were 2 for 15 euros.

But I went there to buy another copy of TRC, alas, it was
out of stock.

It might make for a cool 35 minute EP though.

I agree, Funkaholic1972...MiaBocca nailed it. The album flat out sucks. You've heard of 3 Chains 'o Gold? This is 3 discs of crap.

Haven't listened to this album in a long time, probably 4 years, but Joint2Joint is one of his most Genuis songs.

It sounded dated the second it was released - lame production that belonged to the 1980s. If it had all been recorded with live drums then it would've sounded a million times better - u only have to listen to the live studio version of Somebody's Somebody to hear how much it improves on the original just by using live instruments...

i agree with whoever said Emancipation was a waste of plastic and paper. In the HMV near me, the 3 cd-set going for £3.99!!!

i contemplated it but then i just bought a 'real' Prince album - Parade on cd.

It cost twice as much and you only got one cd, but at least it wasn't full of pretentious shit.

JAMIESTARR

Very blandly produced "In This Bed Eye Scream" and also
"Sex In The Summer" would have been great singles

That's funny. I find absolutely nothing 'commercial' on Emancipation!

That's a classic album and has some of the most beautiful songs on there. I love this album, great for rainy days and for all the love, you can feel all over that he was pouring himself out, how could anyone not like? It's so beautiful wonderful and felt all over...it was put together LOVELY. heart

Because they have no taste or sense. Emancipation is a great album--consistent and very listenable. The disk is a bit slick, but not nearly as slick as the garbage played on todays radio.

Songs are all very well written, and remember, Prince was at his happiest when disk was released. Critics loved it too, and at the time most of the fans loved it, but org fans are stuck in the 80's and have a rigid taste that borders on fanatically inept.

Take it from a guy with trained ears: This album was great and will always be great. You haters ease back.

I agree with you freaky! To me, this is Prince's most personal, heartfelt albums ever. He was truly uninhibited while making this one. I absolutely LOVE it!!!

i would be stuck in Prince's 80s if it weren't for the rainbow children actually being good. In fact its the only good thing he's done since lovesexy probably.

everyone, look, emancipation is just shit. admit it. its pretty fucking shit. im guessing everyone here who likes it, tends to like ball-less shit like Shaggy as well.

Not everyone is dissing it, just seems the latest fashion at P.Org amongst the regulars is all.

AllMusicGuide places it as best Prince album of the 90s. 4/5

Warr.Org places it as best Prince 90s album also. 4/5

Average rating at amazon.com of 4/5.

unfortunately 'best P album of the 90s' doesn't mean much.
