Whats your opinion on prince singing on ... ...the last few records AOA, HNR1, HNR2.
Most of his latest Vocals are recorded very upfront and they feel kinda lazy. There is no punch behind it. Its ok with me, but Strong vocals are missing and maybe some songs would benefit, if they were played in another key (higher). Fact is, that the vioce is changing with age and his voice changed also...u can cleary hear it.

My opinion - Prince is in complete control of his vocal range. His vocals on Phase 2 are his best of the most recent 4 albums and his best showing since Somewhere Here On Earth. I find it pretty damn impressive. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. More info at https://www.facebook.com/TMATSPodcast/

There's a lot to love about phase 2 and nothing lazy about vocals in Look at Me, Revelation, When She Comes...even Screwdriver. One could say "Forever in My Life" has lazy vocals if one chose to hear it that way. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. ...do you really think, that the vocals on look at me, Revelation, when she comes have any power??? He is almost whining...(the gain was probably on max, while recording..)
But...Of course, it is ok with me, that u like it...
I have the impression he isnt able anymore to hit high notes anymore, as he used to...Thats why he composed his songs in lower ranges, because its more comfortalbe to sing for him. but the songs than lacks any power...
Powerfull Vocals - Endorphinmashine, around the world in a day, come, Sott, ..... different range - more balls.
Listen to the Vocals of - somebody s somebody...lot of emotions, soul and power, thats impressive. right back here in my arms or the live Version of Get yo groove on (emacipation special)...wow, thats great vocals.
that he can still sing, we all know, but it clearly changed.

Phase 2 is the least "whiney" Prince album in a long time. I prefer Stare to We Gets Up any day (they are similar, I agree). Look at Me and Revelation contain great vocal deliveries. the falsetto of The breakdown is thin and full of effects to sound fuller (...even the part where he sings in his normal voice is doubled or how ever its called....)
Compare it to the one of The most beautiful girl....This one is so much stronger....
But i like that song anyway, one of the better ones from AOA.

I was thinking that myself whilst listening to If Eye Could Get Ur Attention. "Had to get off the boat so I could walk on water..."

There is a difference between lazy vocals and a laid-back delivery. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. More info at https://www.facebook.com/TMATSPodcast/

You started a thread asking for opinions. Perhaps you should edit the title to read "Who agrees with my opinion?" [Edited 12/19/15 9:41am] Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. More info at https://www.facebook.com/TMATSPodcast/

u dont need to agree with me...it wont change the fact, that HNR 2 lacks strong powerfull vocals...he still sounds good to me. What i wanted to discuss is, that he maybe is not able to sing the way he used to...because of his age. thats why he is unsing multiple layered vocals almost on all his songs to sound "richer/bigger" , upfront recordings of his voice. . There, changed it for you.

He's always layered multiple voices since For You, tha's kind of a weak argument.

you prefer the vocal-delivery of stare more than the stronger ones from we gets up? for real? then...ok.

Well...I've never seen a thread here in which someone points to We Gets Up as a defense of how good Prince's vocals USED to be, so that's entertaining. Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. More info at https://www.facebook.com/TMATSPodcast/

Singing has more nuances than just 'power' vocals and how do you quantify what is a power vocal?. The songs tell the singer how to sing, if you can listen to Revelation and say the vocal on that song isn't powerful then I don't know what to tell you. There is no song like 'interactive' that requires Prince to sing strong enough to cut through the music track like the guitar riff does. Think about the music and then think about the vocal and define clearly what you determine is powerful vocals because screams or high notes or loudness doesn't equal power in the vocal all the time. In this album Princes tenor is full bodied, his head voice has wonderful pitch and clarity, he's reaching his falsetto notes with ease and his falsetto tonality is strong not thin at all. I think over the years Prince has become a singer that is more in tune with the music than his vocals. That is partly due to his age and wear and tear on a voice that has been active for 40 plus years. At this point even if his voice was severely depleted what is the point of pointing it out? He's nearly 60! Id rather talk about the abilities this man still has than waiting for skills to leave him as he ages.

[/I think the vocals on revelation are very delicate, recorded upfront with gain at its peak.... U are right, we should ve happy, he is still makin some noise/music....but his vocals used to touch me ( gänse-feeling I mean there are two kinds of singing - just singing a melody like a normal dude (no singer) - singing with Passion/power A friend of mine (vocal-coach) keeps telling me, if singing would be easy, everybody would sing. But u got push it hard and put your soul into it to make it sound great/different. [Edited 12/19/15 15:11pm]

His vocal power & playfulness is definitely not where it was anymore, imo. He seems to sing in a comfort zone now. It's rarely ever as captivating as it used to be. We get hints of how it used to be every now & then, but even those moments go by too quick. I understand it, due to Prince's age, & how much he performs live, it was bound to happen. I will say that he still sounds pretty damn good though, especially when you compare his vocals to other stars his age. He blows them out of the water, honestly. الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

I really dislike the vocal style that he does on songs like If I Could Get Ur Attention. Very weak and nasal. Ugh. Taja's version was always a favorite of mine, and it was always a dream to hear Prince's vocals for this one. But man, what a let down. IMO of course

Welcome2 tour had really impressively strong vocals .. Since then he has not played live much and what he did play was mostly rawk .. I dont think songs like screwdriver do his vocal chords any favors ... But ultimately his lack of regular gigs and mostly studio time is likely the reason .. I have no doubt he could retun to near peak form if he was singing live more on tour .. Its like his drumming .. A drummer who performs 2 hours 150 nights a will always be strnger than a drummer who only records in studio a few weeks of the year .. Same with vocals .. P be letting those muscle get weak

Most Beautiful Girl had really good producers and enginers on it. Given Em What They Love -felt like she may have produced it - and definitely had a good engineer.(s)
