I do by no means consider myself a Prince expert, but I'd like to try to answer, even though I am often wrong about many things. I think Joy In Repetition is about a person rediscovering woman that he once knew--and he was almost guided to the club without realising, and discovered she was surrounded by people who did not love her, even though they made out they did. They just wanted to use her.
