The BEST Prince Song

I know this has been discussed to death... But can we kind of make an elimination amongst the fans and discuss...

WHAT DO U THINK PRINCE'S BEST SONG IS?

Personally I feel his best song is:

Joy in Reptition

Only one? Damn... It's a close call between 1999... Oh well, that's the first one I think of, so that's my choice!

No.

The answer is clearly When Doves Cry.

It's everything a great song should be. First off, it's catchy. Second, it's ambiguous enough that fans of R&B, soul, and electronic music will all like it. Third, it has not one, but TWO really cool guitar solos, it was groundbreaking when it debuted because it didn't possess a bass track, and therefore is historical and revolutionary, and ultimately, in my honest to God opinion, it will probably be THE song Prince is remembered by when he dies, maybe even more so than Purple Rain. I think people who weren't fans will refer to him as "that Purple Rain guy", but I doubt they'll even look up that song. When Doves Cry was also covered and featured in Romeo and Juliet. It's versatile, memorable, weird and quirky, but so goddamn encompassing yet sparse all at the same time. It is the perfect pop song.

Bring on the controversy but I challenge any of you to name a better song.

While I can't answer this question without some serious thought, I think I have to disagree with your criteria for what makes a great song. There are plenty of great songs that aren't catchy, with ambiguous lyrics and sport two cool guitar solos.

That being said, WDC is definitely one of the best.

Second the WDC vote. Prince has made some amazing music... but, as far as I'm concerned, no popular musician in modern times has ever topped WDC. Just out-of-this-world original and exceptional and, 30 years later, still like nothing else ever and nothing-less-than absolutely captivating every time it comes on. Even just the first few seconds of WDC is amazing - every time I hear it kick in (even now, at time #gazillion), it's exhilirating.

With all of that said, of course "best" is very subjective... and I wouldn't quibble with anyone who preferred, for example, Anna Stesia or Dot Parker or any of a number of other possibilities. But, for me, there's just nothing else like WDC. By anyone.

And I feel the same way about If I Was Your Girlfriend. On a record where no one thought he could top PR. In popularity, of course he didn't. But otherwise, his Magnum Opus. And therefore we have a hard discussion on our hand.

The popular choices for this title are WDC and If I Was Your Girlfriend. For me, it's If I Was Your Girlfriend. Absolutely incredible and singular on every level.

Other contenders: The Ballad of Dorothy Parker, Joy in Repetition, Annastesia, Sometimes It Snows in April, Everybody Loves Me.

I see what you did there at the end with Everybody Loves Me. Other than that, you've got pretty dang good list.
.
My choice: Adore. The lyrics, sentiment, and vocals are just sooo good.

Honorable mentions: If I Was Your Girlfriend, Power Fantastic, The Beautiful Ones, and 1999

It's not my favorite song, but not having a baseline makes it such a unique pop song. It has to be considered one his 5 greatest for sure, if not the greatest. Most musicians point to this song as being one of his best pop tunes for many of the reasons you stated in your post, especially because it possesses no bass.

Yeah, everyone that is except Prince

Lyrical and musical monster as he geniously blends funk, rock, techno, race, politics, and church into one song...

Adorecream

Officially released - Adore, a perfect ballad and the devices and charms of 1970s and 1980s soul vocals with a Prince feel. A cascading niagara of voices and passionate lyrics.

Unofficial - Electric Intercourse, a smouldering sexually charged ballad of being struck with lust and desire, culminating in a immense scream of passion and desire. Even better than the song that replaced it, The beautiful ones.
Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name
