He makes a few interesting comments in this interview, but honestly,Prince is not the type of person you'd want to meet and hang out with.He doesn't seem like a warm, down to earth person at all.

But I’m like, that’s my coat that’s in Hard Rock Café. They’re not supposed to have that. Get that outta there. And second of all: how did they get it? And then they’ll say, “well, a bandmate.” I say, “oh really? Go get the band member and bring him to me.” And then they sit down and come in with their head down. I ain’t gonna say who it is, but that’s what I’m talking about.

“Why? What do I say to your wife now?” “I came on hard times, I don’t know what to tell you.” Now in my heart, I forgive them. But like I said, it’s like, you won’t hear from him anymore. See, back in the day, he was making some comments too. We’ve all had to deal with it, but I just, wow.

i'm curious now. did this bandmember go into prince's wardrobe and just take stuff which

he/she then sold to hard rock cafe?

or is it more like they went ahead and sold stuff they already had. like mayte selling his
clothes that she still had kicking about etc.

because if they stole from him, i can see why he would be miffed. if they didn't and just
sold 'their' prince items, it's kinda sad that he makes such a fuss.

either way, he comes across as pretty unpleasant to me, reading this. i mean, ewww neutral

.

Ok so your friends come over and they see a really cool jacket in your closet... They're like oh wow I love this jacket can I have it please?... You give it to them as a FRIEND and next thing U know its on display in some nasty fastfood chain restaurant and your friend made $$$ selling your gift... So that is ok because they didn't steal it from you right? eek

.

I don't find the comments on Eric Leeds that mean.

So he said Clarence was better -- as he said he's outclassed on the bass by that British lady whose name I forget. Maybe even Eric agrees Clarence is better -- doesn't make him a worthless musician.

I think this was a great interview and I enjoyed seeing Prince being honest, candidly answer and share his thoughts on several things... Now when I hear people say Prince lives in Prince world as being a bad thing I can't help asking what life would you like him to live besides his OWN???

.

They diss him for being him but have no problem enjoying his gift of music when they see it fit...

Damn, it's a shame that the interviewer didn't ask him if he shaves his pubic hair. :/

I mean all of this is pretty interesting, I guess. But I wonder what his reaction would be...

Agree!!

It's funny he deff saw the recent BBC THE VAULT DOCUMENTARY and was taking "shots" indirectly at Susan Rodgers... lol

He took a couple shots at Dez Dickerson too...in his book, Dickerson said Prince was amazed at Bob Seger's success with power ballad anthems...also the part about "his wife", and about Prince's coat being sold to the Hard Rock cafe'

What does it matter about a coat? Prince has 1000's of coats. It's about money. In fact the whole interview, in subtext was just Prince worrying that he didn't get every dollar available or that someone else may get something and he didn't get a cut. In a perfect world he could hire someone to exploit the catalog for him, but I think he rather enjoys acting like a bigshot putting people on the spot over every little thing remotely assoicated with the thing. In truth, I've seen this type of bullshit before. Prince is a ghetto-azz business manager, feeling his oats over his DELUXE APARTMENT IN THE SKY-YYY. MOVIN ON UP! biggrin

This bass is wicked, you understand? That’s why none of ’em will come to the gig anymore. They’ll just stand in the back, because they know what they said. Making up all these names about people and giving credit where credit ain’t due.Kendrick [Lamar], this is his year now...

WTF? You couldn't pay me to write that shit down. If I was there for the interview, I would have told Prince to take his meds and call me back when he is coherent. Like, how can they stand in the back, if they won't come to the gigs? And.. what does Kendrick... Lamar... have to do with anything? It's Larry Graham's Nephew's year, but Mr I'mSoIntoContemporaryCulture clearly doesn't know it.

Didn't Kendrick receive the most Grammy nominations this year?

He seems to be getting more open all the time. One of the most revealing interviews I can remember. The start of his memoirs?

-----

EBONY: Will you be remastering the catalog?
Prince: Hopefully, yeah. A new Greatest Hits. Because I never had anything to do with [The Hits/The B-Sides]. But put great liner notes in it to explain what record came from what and why. Explain the backstory of it. Somebody said “Purple Rain” was inspired by Bob Seger! I said, call him in. “Sit down, man. Y’all got to have everything, huh? Bob Seger?! You gon’ put that in the ether? OK.” [laughter]

-----

Hopefully, indeed.

Also, one of the reasons "The Hits/The B-Sides" is so masterful (for 3 discs; there could be so much more) is because Prince is one of the greatest and hardest working musical artists ever. And, he was cool enough — or not — to allow others to put the brilliant pieces together themselves, even as they didn't completely understand the sequence of his heart.

Perhaps a great example of what can happen at times when a little bit of that famous grip is entrusted to others. Perchance something happens that takes that art in directions that even its creator couldn't imagine. Perhaps not that unlike a producer of tender age popping up at our deep a gaping, giving up part of that concern over that which none of us really have that much control over anyway: how we are ultimately viewed.

Regardless of what we do or don't, our critics will always be able to be as insightful and inspirational or ignorant and cynical as is their right. And they will always have the final word. We can only work to be better versions of ourselves.

But considering some of the utter debasement Prince — and he's been no angel at times himself — has certainly encountered over his lifetime from those that mostly seek a piece of him for their own selfish gains, one can probably at least glimpse part of his monumental dilemma.

Love the music, but, am not fond of Prince at all. He is, in my humble opinion, batshit crazy. I have been a huge fan since 1979 and have followed his carrer and think he is losing it.

When people would ask me the question, "Who would you love to sit down and have a chat with?" I would always answer, "Prince." - Now - not a chance. The less I know about him the better.

Certain people you'd sit down with not to become friends with -- because they'd likely not be great friends -- but to learn from.. or just to experience.. e.g. Steve Jobs, Pablo Picasso, Brian Wilson, Sly Stone, Syd Barret, Adam Ant, Courtney Love, Liza Minelli (just for the bizarness such a chat would entail), Lou Reed.. Andy Warhol.. Elvis Presley, Carlos Santana, Serge Gainsbourg.. so much talent, so much fucked up about their personalities.

Change it one more time..

Yes, we were there at Paisley Park when they played on this track repeadendly. Honestly it was a very boring process...they played this instrumental at least 6 times. It was Xavier, Marcus, John Blackwell, and Prince came out for the solo.

Was that the same time you heard the W2A album? You've got some enviable access there. Does Prince know you to talk to? Nodding terms? If I lived in Minne I'd well be trying to go up there whenever I could.

So Prince has 1000 coats why should he worry about the single coat a supposed friend stole and sold for profit? I'm guessing that seems strange to people but maybe you're right, Prince only cares about if he Dickerson called him up and said hey brother I stole your purple rain trench coat and I'm gonna sell it for 10k, I'm gonna give you a piece of the pie. I am sure that would have made it all right with Prince. It's not like he stewed about this in the media before or something. Yeah I guess it's ok that just because Prince is rich that those less well off should be able to pimp shit off him and eat too. There really isn't anything wrong with that right? Yeah so let's move on.

Interesting interview, nice to hear him look back at his past. Just a shame he seems bitter towards old band members and work collegues. It's like he can't see any one's point of view if it's not the same as his. We're not all millionaires, Prince...

Candid questions and even more candid answers. Did the journalist get him drunk to speak so much and dish some dirt. A lot of veiled digs at the likes of Eric, Dr Fink, No Doubt, The Time etc. He seems a bit bitter and doesn't want to give anyone credit.

.

He obviously didn't like the BBC Documentary on The Vault but I don't recall anything negative in it.

.

The bits were he talked about the music/songs were interesting. If its true about WB wanting Puffy to do a remix for I Hate U, you can't blame him for being pissed off.

I think that if anyone who I employed decided they know better than MYSELF what to do with the music I solely created and wanted to appropriate themselves with it for the "sake of History" I would be SERIOUSLY pissed and tell them to f"ck off and mind their own biz.. so I think Prince was quite a gentleman about the whole thing smile

Regardless of her talent that woman seems to be a bit of a koo koo imho...

Except that was not what she said.

Maybe her interview is still available, unlike the Ebony one which I never got to read.

I thought the same, the journalist didn't hold back.

Similarly when P played him Phase 2 and he said 'I like this better than Phase 1' - don't we all!
