About the 'not looking back':

At his live concerts he is (on average) playing 85+% songs that are 25 years or older.

Maybe even 90+%.

He is living in the past yet denies it.

You know, I was thinking about this the other day. What we really want is the complete (as is feasible) Revolution sessions rather than any half-baked tracklistings of proposed albums which would end up with all sorts of alternate versions people aren't happy with. Or, god forbid, prince's current take on a song.

.

Like Bob Dylan released recently. Oh, and if you bought the full 18 CD box set, you got a nice present.

.

But the famz insist this would be impossible.

.

And Prince "doesn't want to look back". (Except when he's releasing a four year old acoustic album he recorded with Andy Allo. Or when he posts a 20 minute video of a gig he did almost a year and a half ago, and the video contains nothing but 30 year old songs. Or when his latest album is a collection of songs recorded and released years ago, and one of them is a remake of a track from the early 1980s. Etc. etc. etc.)

Bart, Dylan pretty much claims to be completely uninterested in looking back, too. He just has a record company that controls the masters and wants to protect them from going public domain in Europe. That's the only reason we're seeing these huge (and limited) releases). Every December we get huge amounts of tracks dumped in order extend copyright on previously unreleased material--this year, they did part of it as a "Bootleg Series" Collectors Edition and the rest as an exclusive bonus download to that. But Prince has no pressure to do that sort of clearing the decks--his oldest stuff is still well short of the 50 year mark. So while it's not impossible, it isn't at all sensible. Certainly, he could (and should, in my opinion) be marketing the vault in a select but aggressive manner--but we have no reason to hope for anything like this "set."

Now, as too looking back--there is no comparison between the sort of looking back involved in a major vault-release project from 30 years ago (of mostly readily avialable booted material) and something using recordings from the last 5 years. That's not looking back at all, really--and a re-recording of an unreleased track isn't really worth getting all hotted up about either. And I can just imagine how you'd let him have it if he ever did participate in something like a 1986 box set. It might be worth releasing just to see what you'd say. I'm sure it would somehow prove more about his current mediocrity than about his former glory, though.

I am tired of the same tracks being featured from live streams and the like--but I don't expect that to change. But I think you're more than intelligent enough to know that you're being disingenuous in a lot of this post.

is everything on here the BEST possible quality audio/video ????

All of the official vinyl and CD sources are.

Some of the other tracks are way better such as Baby G-Go but a lot of others are just what are already circulating.

I see this project as an amazing historical document rather than canon of studio quality masters.

The videos are very compressed.

wink lol wink lol

Actually, I think its more than simply denying it.
He blames us.

I've read interviews where he says that he plays "the hits" because "that's what the audience expects".

I think fear prevents him playing mostly new material.

It has to be an exceptional reason for him to play all new material.
With the Ultimate Live Experience, it was his crusade to get the Gold Experience and Exodus released (and there were alot of audience members unhappy at the time at the lack of hits).
With One Nite Alone, I think it was the Religious Zeal of The Rainbow Children.
With the Celebration concerts at PP he knew he was playing for hardcore fans and that that was what they wanted.

He's been hinting at doing gigs there again to counter Ticketmaster. I think it would be a good opportunity to play mostly newer stuff. You've got to be a big fan to make the effort to get out there, right?

He did not ask me.

He did not read my posts here.

He just ASSumes.

He is just lazy and does not do the effort.

Perhaps after the revolution.

This is it though, there's our definition of looking back and there's his. He's happy to play old songs live (sure he still plays the hits at a lot of small club shows) and he's happy to revisit old songs on new releases. What he isn't happy to do is release old versions of songs with old bands.

So:

- he is unwilling to share royalties?

- he is unwilling to deal with the people involved?

- he is unwilling to handle the financial paperwork via a third person? (even if hired by him)

If he is that uncomfortable with reality he is truly a waste of time. He is wasting his chances to please the fans, earn money, earn money for others, beat the b00ts, etc.

He is unwilling to confront these things.

Is that his weakness?

Some people were speculating on another thread that he doesn't own the rights to the unreleased stuff but even if he did I don't think he'd do it.

Honestly, I think it's an artistic decision that he doesn't want to revisit old recordings, even if he's happy to revisit old songs. What do I know though, i'm just speculating based on previous behaviour and what little him and others have said over the years. What do you think?

I'd say he's well aware alright, but while he's alive he's got control.

We have the change-the-lyrics-whenever-we-feel-uneasy-or-want-to-be-politically-correct issue.

Aside from that one: why not realease perfectly good songs?

Especially when he's playing them live? (in largely unaltered renderings)

He'll have someone burn them masters when he dies.

They coudl do the same as Pink Floyd and release it on a limited edition vinyl. Instead they do a major release. Also, Dylan's been doing box sets since 1985, and Biograph is considered a milestone.

.

But Prince has no pressure to do that sort of clearing the decks--his oldest stuff is still well short of the 50 year mark. So while it's not impossible, it isn't at all sensible. Certainly, he could (and should, in my opinion) be marketing the vault in a select but aggressive manner--but we have no reason to hope for anything like this "set."

.

I don't care about the motive, the fact is that there's a massive box set of Dylan recordings out now, and those that bought it got another massive release for free. Meanwhile famz claim that there's no market for similar releases WRT Prince.

.

Next year there'll be a 2CD release of a Julia Fordham album where the biggest hit reached #27 in the British charts. So for some reason Cherry Red Records has licensed that album from the original record company and paid to dig up B-sides and remixes etc., they'll sell this for a fairly low price and yet this must be economically viable for them. But remastered & expanded Prince albums wouldn't be?

.

And I can just imagine how you'd let him have it if he ever did participate in something like a 1986 box set.

.

Because he'd inevitably fuck it up.
