3121 Is The Best Prince Album
...since The Gold Experience and better than anything since.
Can I get a witness? | |

Agreed. Damn near flawless album. |

Agreed... Up until Lotusflow3r - his last near-flawless album. Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

Lotusflow3r is the EMANCIPATION of the 00's... So much filler on those two albums...
3121, I have no idea why the ORG never gives this album the credit it's due. It's the most complete Prince album of the 00's by far. I mean songs like Fury and The Word, The Dance... Such a strong album when you compare it to everything else released.

I was refering to Lotusflow3r standalone. Not MPLS and thisisthelatestchickimbanging discs. Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

No, it's not. It's very good, but the "best"? Never!

It's strange, with his old albums there was no dramatic opinions on how good or bad his album was... When you talk about Parade, 1999, Sign O' The Times, Purple Rain, etc... We all pretty much agree on their genius...
But with his work being so average and below average these last 15 or so years, we can't even as fans come to agree on what album is "bad" or "good" anymore... I guess that shows how inconsistant his work has been over these years.

I do love 3121 but for me Art Official Age is his best in a long time. I would place Emancipation, 3121 and Art Official Age ahead of Gold.

I loved the title track, as well as "Black Sweat," "Fury," and of course, "The Dance," but I just think with 3121 the sum of its parts are greater than the whole. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Some say AOA is his best in years, others say 3121, some say Planet Earth... At this point I don't even know what to critically say what is good and bad anymore. I can say MPLS Sound is a good album, even though we know it's not...
I'll just stick to his oldies on vinyl.

3121 is a very good modern Prince album. But I don't think it came touch TRC. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

Musicology brought me back and so 3121 was the first new Prince album in years that I rushed to the store to buy. Just like in the old days. And I liked what I heared. It's a good pop-funk album. 3121, Fury, Beautiful Loved & Blessed, The Word...all great songs. It's just the ballads that are a bit by-the-numbers. But then again, all his slow jams are just variations on Do Me Baby. If you've heared one, you've heared them all...

I would say 3121 is his best since Scary Monsters.
Or, am I getting confused there ... .

This is the Gospel truth in Princeville. IMO there hasn't been one album post Lovesexy that I think is genuis but he used to hit the mark more often than not but for me it just went downhill with the disturbingly bland "Emancipation. First time I was totally bored with a new Prince record. 36 tracks- all with the same flat prodction. Just one flabby slob of an album.
I happen to like Planet Earth (it seems to get murdered here) and I like much of Lotus/MPLS but I think 3121 is pretty close to having no filler. Is as good as Parade FERK NO!

TRC is truly a love it or hate it album. For me the narration drags it down. Maybe I'll give it another chance

3121 is a very good album and will go down as a Prince classic in years to come. __________________________________________________

For me it's between AOA and TRC.
That said, Musicology, 3121 and Lotusflow3r have their charms.

3121 is an album that never really clicked with me. There are quite a few songs on there that I like to various degrees, but except Black Sweat all of them somehow fail to really excite me. Well crafted songs, but a bit plain and boring somehow. I have tried to get into this album but it wasn't for me.
I also think that AOA was a pretty solid newer Prince album. And I really enjoy the new songs Stare and Free Urself. So at the moment Prince isn't doing too bad in my opinion. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Besides the title track I think it's pretty much forgettable.

I don't really see any logic in making absolute statements like that. Best according to which criterias? There are many ways the quality of a work of art can be assessed. And is it really necessary to compare albums? Can't they just be judged for what they are? A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Honestly I think it shows how inconsistant P's fans are. I read a lot of absolute statements on here by people who are unable to make a clear demonstration of why they believe such record is great and such record sucks. They "feel" it's genius or plain lame and believe it justifies their "feeling" being edicted into a dogma (see how many threads begin with "let's face facts" ). Lots of such people also have a really limited musical culture besides the most obvious, mainstream music scene. Basically the rule of the uneducated. As usual, it's all matter of subjective musical taste.
"3121" is for me the "less played" P album of the 00's, together with "Musicology".
