Why Critics Always Overlook His Other 80's Albums

On almost every major music publication GREATEST ALBUMS list... They always overlook great PRINCE album's such as PARADE, LOVESEXY, AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY.

In the latest greatest albums ever list published by UNCUT, 7 BOWIE albums made the cut. In the great book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, Q Magazine, and other major music publications, they only list 1999, PURPLE RAIN, SIGN O' THE TIMES as the most essential PRINCE albums.

Personally I do agree, I feel those 3 are the best Prince albums overall, but why is it that those lists always seem to overlook his other great albums of the 80's? The only other major music publication that included Dirty Mind to the list of greatest albums was ROLLING STONE. Almost every other greatest albums list tend to just choose 1999, PR, SOTT.

Do you think critically, iconically albums like PARADE were overlooked? It feels like an album like ATWIAD was always overshadowed by PURPLE RAIN and PARADE always overshadowed by SOTT.

Personally I think they should always include these when it comes to PRINCE's albums on GREATEST ALBUMS EVER LIST:

DIRTY MIND

1999

PURPLE RAIN

PARADE

SIGN O' THE TIMES

Agree 110%. They're the definitive 80s Prince albums. Every single one of them is perfect (where's that masterpiece banner?).

I've seen that list in Uncut and you always see the same albums come back in those lists. Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys # 1 again? No black artists in the top ten, not even Marvin Gaye! I wouldn't be surprised if all those critics were white men between 40-60 years. (Like me, but I would surely put Marvin and James Browns The Payback in the top ten.)
As for Prince, those three, 1999/PR/SOTT are simply the most rock oriented albums. Lovesexy may be alittle too freaky for the average rocker and even Rolling Stones fans back in 81 found Prince a little strange (and that's putting it mildly.)

Lovesexy just isn't as good.

This is what is known as pack journalism. They crib off of other reporters and form a consensus about what's true or important, rather than taking the time to investigate a subject on their own.

Reporters are basically lazy. I know - I used to be one.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

In fairness, they always do include these when it comes to Prince's albums on Greatest albums ever list. Maybe not all of them but he's only one artist.

They only include PURPLE RAIN, SOTT AND 1999.

The only list that included DIRTY MIND was ROLLING STONE.

Never came across a list that included PARADE.

Parade is my fav prince album but I think in terms of cultural resonance Purple Rain, SOTT and 1999 are more 'important'. The sound of 1999 influenced a million bands, the sound of Parade is something the big Prince fans really enjoy but would be a really weird introduction to him . I can see a logic that makes sense in choosing those three.

Au contraire.

Lovesexy is just too good to be fully understood by musical critics.

What list?

Every major greatest albums ever list never mention PARADE, ever.

I think the only time PARADE was mentioned on any list was in the Village Voice poll of best albums of 86. Other than that it is always overlooked amongst the general music critics when it comes to greatest albums ever list. Even best albums of the 80s list they never list PARADE.

Having 3 albums on any list is impressive. But once you get past his 3 most accomplished albums most peps list varies, it's all subjective. Like, I like Controversy and What Time is it? more then Parade and ATWIAD. Parade may be considered great to us Prince fans, but to the masses it is not. Minus Girls & Boys Side A is the problem with Parade not recieving better reviews, plus a critically panned movie attached to it doesn't help. Dirty Mind shows up on lists because it was a game changer for P and takes precedence over the rest of his 80's catalog.

I am guessing Parade would fall at 4, 5 or 6 if you took an 80's poll here?

Controversy should be in those lists.
