The Sweeter She Is

Man.

P sounds cool on this one, doesn't he?

Especially his voice on the "now my heart still's aching from the TERRIBLE BLOW".

Also, the flick of the guitar note on each verse!

Ha Ha!

He's no joke people!

Prince made a wonderful, very soulful cover out of this song. He more than did justice on it.

.

Now, the first time I listened to this track, like a number of other veteran fans, I heard echoes from his early '80's work from the purple diaspora: "If The Kid Can't Make You Come" (The Time), "3 x 2 = 6" (Vanity 6), etc. A couple things I took note of with this track.

.

First, it clearly sounds to me like Prince had done a cover of this song around maybe 1980-83 as it incorporates recognizable musical elements found Prince and protege songs from that era. Princevault, however, cites 2013 as the year of release for the rehearsal version of the recording. So my thinking is that he must have originally recorded the cover around '81-'82 and dug out what I can only imagine is a 30+ year-old demo from the vault, and re-recorded it around 2013 with 3rdEyeGirl for release that same year. It's a great choice, but it left me curious as to what made him select this song when he's always writing new material. Of course I could be flat out wrong in my calculations, but I would love to know what year he originally recorded his cover of this song because I am convinced it wasn't anytime after the 1980s.

.

Second, I found it unusual that the re-recorded version with 3EG kept so much of his early '80s sound intact, like he had not updated it all, or only minimally. It definitely worked, delivering a classic, 'vintage' Prince feel to the track, for those with an appreciation of his Purple Rain era material. But artistically speaking, it seems like an uncharacteristic choice for him to have made. For example, with "Feel U Up", and "Extraloveable", both were taken from the Vault to be revamped to a great degree, given a more contemporary and polished sound for release years after he wrote them (same I guess could be said for many of his songs that were penned in the early to mid-eightees and later released on studio albums in the late '80s and early '90s?).

.

I'm not really making a point here. Just sharing an observation that struck me immediately with this track and had me thinking on his artistic process--why he did not seem to update the sound to the same degree he's done with other Vault songs. It makes it stand out to so many other songs he has released over the years.

I kinda went off on a tangent there, but speaking to the original post, I've all along considered Prince a master in the art of infusing emotion into his singing, lyrics and composition. He really put his heart and soul out there on this beautiful cover.

I heard this preformed at the Mohegian Sun shows with the NPG and it was amazing. Was a studio version of this actually recorded?

Well, P released a studio/live studio performance of this song, apparently, with the 3rdeyegirl band about 2 years ago. He released it on a random downloading site. That's the version I'm referencing.

The song was some stellar shit!

What are the lyrics to the song, please? Where can I purchase it, please? And in my own life: I could give my other money to buy me flowers and my other would return with stones... and I'm not talking rolling, either. Something wrong going on there best wake up to respecting myself soon. Dear lord help me to forgive some more! Take care.

Well, Arjuna, I hope you make it through whatever tough spot you have going on in your life. If we can learn something about our trials and tribulations, we can be made stronger by going through them or at least better able to handle them if it happens again.

Since, I can't hear the songcan somebody post the lyrics? Thank you kindly.

I looked for the lyrics and found them for the original 1969 song by The Soul Children but not for the 2013 3EG version. Though I think there is hardly any difference--just words modified to reflect a male perspective instead of female.

The Current has a still-active page with a video of the original 1969 song, and near the top of the page is a link you can click on to listen to the 2013 3EG version:

It is a good performance. I just wish it didn't sound like I was listening on AM radio. Like, I would think it would sound better seeing as how it was recorded in a studio. I think it was a rehearsal....but still.

I still listen to a lot of bad sound rehearsals from all periods, the sound has nothing to do with the quality of a performance smile
