RJOrion

best part of the Sign O The Times movie is when U Got The Look is ending, and the way its shot, makes it looks like Prince is the Devil, standing in the fire of hell...

Hot Thing!

Defnitely. U Got the Look always sounded like a Jordache jeans commercial to me. Overrated track.

I'm with you.

Sure it's fun, but Hot Thing is yet another successful attempt at minimalism in pop.
And it's real jazz, not only because of Eric, it's mature.
U Got The Look is "just" another proof that Prince can pen an FM single, but we knew that since "Manic Monday", heck since "Little Red Corvette". Or "When U Were Mine".

The crazy flange synth line, the cowbell, and those last twenty seconds, this short dialog between Prince and Eric, like some Robert Plant - Jimmy Page Funk duet, that's even funnier than the "World Series Of Love" line. Or at least as good.

Hot Thing is for the musicians. U Got The Look is for those who dream that Prince should have ruled the charts. I say fuck the charts.

As much as the groove locks me in on this song, I would admit, though, that the "looking for big fun" line is a bit childishly shit - almost cringeworthy. But when the sax and guitar kick in during the extended version... biggrin

Hot Thing. Less of a dated sound.

U Got The Look tells on itself, decade wise.

Hot thing is for musicians?
The song is boring as hell musically....a simple drum loop, with a looped snth line. And that little sax part and synth/bass-line, doesnt make ut great! Sorry
Just imagine a band covering the studio - version, ha ha, almost the whole band can go for a walk...the song is soo exited for a musician, there is nothing to play...

That synth keyboard riff is slinky and slick as hell. Very sexual. It makes the song for me. I like the snapping snare and the and the cymbal on the one. A lot of funk tracks are simple musically until you start peeling away the layers behind the basic beat and the repetitive rythm. "Flashlight" is a funk classic but built around a very simple bass line and beat. I mean, damn, SOTT (the title track) is hauntingly simple. Do you dislike that one too?

Hot Thing builds after the first couple of measures and then gets absolutely batshit at the end.

And if we're talking cringe worthy lyrics, Christ, U Got the Look takes the fucking cake. I like both songs but Hot Thing has always been one of my favorites on the record, along with SOTT, Housequake, IIWYG and Forever in My Life.

I love "Hot Thing", but I'd drop it. Simply because I think "U Got The Look" offers the SOTT album something it needs. Something about the mix of synths and guitars on it that has a mood I will always associate with the era.

But really, I love "Hot Thing".

U Got The Look is my favorite of the two tracks but I enjoy them both. The one thing that sorta makes me cringe is when Sheena says "hecka slammin'". neutral Anyway, Prince's vocals on U Got The Look just do something to me. I immediately liked that song the first time I heard it, but I must admit the sax(?) in Hot Thing is solid!

Simple Answer.

Hot Thing live: Better vocals, added Guitar, much more power. The studio-version sounds kinda dead, lifeless.

The Song Sott - i love the energy of the live-version (the guitar).

Thats the problem with prince studiowork. He is doing almost everythink alone. At some point u run out of ideas, where an another Bandmate brings some cool licks, or whatever.

Thats why many songs sound much better live with a band.

The minimalistic production approach is exactly why SOTT is such a lauded album. Sure, you were aware of that?

However, the CD versions of the album do not sound correct on many modern hifi systems. The mastering wasn't done correctly and the overall sound is "dead", or hollow, on many systems.

I prefer the movie version of "If I Was Your Girlfriend" over the album version myself. In general, they're just great alternate versions of the album tracks. I almost wish they were released as an official CD / LP release too.

Exactly, that's the greatness of the album, it follows the same path musically as the "Family Affair" from Sly and The Family Stone; minimalistic intrumentation.

I know, live, the songs get more energy, but for me that does not mean they are better than the studio versions.

Perhaps, that's the best live version of the setlist, and it is really great. Be that as it may, i prefer the original version.

I do not agree. It's one of his most complex drum patterns. The shaker, the tamborine... And the intertwining with the bass line and the rythm guitar, it's alchemy. It's sparse alright, but... simple ?

Even the bridge keyboards are something, listen to the instrumental that closes SOTT the movie, there's so much going on under the vocal track.

Maybe "sparse" is a better word. You're right but I think you know what I meant. Maybe "deceptively simple" would have been a better description. A lot of funk is like that, especially Prince's best funk.

Well, the electro-minimalistic dirty lo-fi sound that Prince introduced has been stolen and plagiarized for so many years now, it's hard to remember what it sounded like when it came out.

Without "Hot Thing", no "I'm a Slave 4 U", just to make one example.

So maybe your ears are too accustomed to the way of making a production sparse. I cannot state it enough times, aything from Prince's Golden Era requires good earphones, a good hi-fi system and a good source (forget the CD version — no dynamics at all).

Inb perfect conditions, you hear the perfection in the reverb tails of the vocal overdubs and the no-reverb, perfection in the way the percussions are tuned "out of tune" (Dre would later make millions on this musical idea alone).

Not for musicians? Go and grab a shaker, and try to follow the beat.
Try the bass drum and the snare alone. You will have a hard time getting the precise feel.
And that's because no one can alter the "swing" setting of the Linn Drum as good as Skipper.

And this changes everything, it makes the loop "musical".

And if you don't get, as a musician/band player/whatever, the second part where Eric kicks in,
the cowbell, the scat, the splashes... Well, there's nothing I can do for you.
