I believe that the radio playing Boys and Girls in the U.S. despite it not being a single and then high school kids thinking it was really cool indicate it was quite radio friendly. Missed opportunity. Not that it matters, he has three hit singles between himself, Sheila E, and the Bangles. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Radio friendly tracks bear repeated listening. They are played on rotation and if bogs down the playlist then it can't stay on rotation. Boys and Girls does bog down. And people would go bonkers hearing on repeat every hour. Many good songs can not go on heavy rotation. Boys and Girls is one of these songs. I like it, and I'd go nuts hearing all day. I usually skip it on Patade because it is such a heavy track that bogs Parade for me if played too often. I can have burgers or pizza multiple times a month, but some dishes like turkey and gravy is fine just once or twice a year. Just too heavy

In my area,"Girls and Boys" received tremendous radio airplay and it was well-liked by a lot of people."Mountains" is a good song but it's not a good choice for a single.

It's funny because so many people here on the ORG defend TGE being his best album in the last 15 years... Yet they don't realize how dated it sounds when you play it today... For You has aged better than TGE Just burn a copy of TGE without the segues. Boom! It no longer sounds dated. Parade is the bomb-diggidity, but Mountains isn't a great single. Oh well. I feel jealous of any young person these days who will discover 'Mountains' and any number of Prince tracks that have sunk into relative obscurity through time or disinterest...it's a treasure trove that I hope will affect their lives in the same way it did my own.
In terms of Mountains in particular, the song in it's entirety is funky and cohesive but as said previously it lacks a killer chorus...I hadn't thought of it before, but good observation on the slight clunkiness. What pulls it through is the instrumentation and the energy.
The video segment with P sitting cross-legged is just brilliant! I never knew anyone holding maracas could look so cool. "I'm much too hot to be cool"

The song is amazing...but the falsetto did him in. There are only two Prince "falsetto" singles that ever did anything on the charts: "Kiss", "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World". Pop fans just dont dig the falsetto Prince. Make it so, Number One...

Or maybe it's just not that good of a track.. I always found it one of the weakest on the album.. Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!

I was very disappointed when it came in #20 in your top 20 Prince songs. It kind of reduced my enthusiasm for the whole show. Better than all of the songs of the 90s?! No way. Ow c'mon. We should know by now that "Art Official Cage" production was meant to be ironic. Because near the end of the song, it's a whole different soundscape than the stadium horn intro. The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter

I don't think Poplife88 is trying to say that North Americans are the center of the world, but rather that Europe got it as a single, but the US didn't...and it's baffling why. G&B could have been a hit in the US at the time. But, during that time period, Europe got lots of singles that the US didn't...and not just Prince, mind you. Your side of the world got many better tunes released as singles than we did. In some ways, I think that may be why he went with Mountains...he was trying to challenge the US radio (unfortunately, they didn't accept the challenge).
I remember being a teen during these years, and many of us would pick up UK magazines to see what was charting across the pond. It always amazed me, because the European audiences of the time DEFINITELY had better taste...but that probably had a lot to do with the radio stations over there playing better quality stuff than what was played over here. For a while there, Europe was the place that REALLY seemed to get Prince (and many other acts I loved), and I would lament how we were stuck with shit like Debbie Gibson on our radios! Y'all seemed to understand that he was a genius, while only the hardcore fans were getting that fact over here. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)
