Girls & Boys is brilliant.. music

and, so is Mountains... I can't say 1 bad word about the Parade singles.

A mystery why they weren't top-10 hits, iirc only Kiss made it to top-10 (#1)... strange...

Because the musis from Parade is absolutely stunning.. love

Both brilliant songs but brilliant singles has always been a guessing game with Prince. Some of his most successful singles sounded NOTHING like what was on the radio at the time. Kiss, When Doves Cry, Thieves in the Temple, 7, just to name a few...so far ahead of their time in some cases that time still has not caught up. Others like U Got the Look, Diamonds and Pearls, Little Red Corvette...hits that had a discernable genre and sounded like they fit the times of when they were released. Black Sweat should have been a huge hit but wasn't. Gold should have worked on radio but it didn't. Sign o the Times did not sound like anything on the radio at the time and was a number 3 hit. The Parade singles outside of Kiss were not candy for the masses. They were brilliant songs but as an ardent follower of Billboard charts for the last 30 years, brilliant songs are not always brilliant singles.

All good things they say never last...

You mean you got the Parade album back in the day, the one with naughty song titles like Venus De Milo and New Position, the one with the jacuzzi and neon palms on the cover?

I'm listening to the song right now in my earphones, and I couldn't disagree more. This song has no energy at all. And then Life can be so nice kick it into high gear right after. Why not follow up with that song instead?

Yes, 'Life Can Be So Nice', that would have made a perfect single.........

Mind you, I prefer the version without the cowbell, you know: before he overproduced it.....

It's a great track, but also an artsy track. This type of track even as poppy as it is, goes over the heads of most listeners. I also agree with you on the extended version. Parade is a tad too sophisticated for general audiences. Imagine that! After hitting low low bottom with simpleton garbage like Art Official Cage, it's hard to remember when Prince music was sophisticated.

Indeed, G&B was the third single from Parade in Europe, with Under the Cherry Moon as b-side (and Erotic City on the 12").

Anotherloverholenyohead was 4th single over here with I Wanna be you lover as b-side.

Great song, poor choice for a follow-up to Kiss.

As much as I love Mountains...I think it went over a lot of peoples heads. It was a bit too arty for the basic top40 listener.

Girls & Boys should've been the next single.

The music on Parade has held up incredibly well. The most "modern" sounding Prince album right now. If a new band released this today, no one would bat an eye or think it sounded like it was released over 20 something years ago.

Like i've said many times on this forum... If you compare Parade on how well it sounds today in 2015, and you play an album like TGE, it just sounds so dated now, and TGE has not held up at all... Depsite being his "strongest" work of the 90's.

This is true and dated in some cases can be a good thing ( I mean I LOVE 70s music and it still sounds alive ) but yeah The Gold Experience is stuck in bad way... I Hate U is always the standout..

It's funny because so many people here on the ORG defend TGE being his best album in the last 15 years... Yet they don't realize how dated it sounds when you play it today... For You has aged better than TGE lol

Genius era... Genius... Didn't get the critical and commercial credit it deserves...

PARADE was really slept on as an album in 1986... Didn't receive a lot of recognition besides Kiss going #1 and his own harcore fans which can appreciate the genius of this album.

Yes and remember Prince was very unsatisfied with the album. That should you tell you something
about his artistic judgement...

(Which is not a comment on the sound of TGE, I have no problems with that at all.)

I agree the flop of UtCM had a hand in it, but it also wasn't the right choice for a follow-up single. It DEFINITELY should have been "Girls & Boys". I know that one local station here in Houston played that tune anyway, instead of "Mountains", and it really caught on. In fact, the other top 40 Station at the time started playing it as well, and eventually the R&B stations did as well. The fact that it had a video on MTV also cemented the tune as a local hit. Oh, and the local clubs? They played the HELL outta G&B!

"Mountains", on the other hand, got little to no airplay. I heard the single once on an R&B station, and a fade-out of the 12" version on a bilingual top 40 station. Never heard it in a club or in any other place at the time. It's a great tune, but I don't know that it was right for a single.

Boys and Girls is a good track but not a radio friendly track. Kiss was the only possible single on it. And it still stands out today and sounds as fresh as anything released today. Kiss does not sound like an 80's "oldie" that's for sure.
