Not sure what exactly you are referring to, but world history is out there for all to see. The internet makes it even easier to access it these days. A little study could shed some light for you.

nod

Tensions between the Arabic world and the West/Israel were already all over the news in the mid 80's, and were slowly becoming a greater concern for Westerners as the Cold War threat was slowly fading away (though it was still a huge concern back then, with Reagan's Star Wars program and so on). Terrorism was already all over the news (I was a kid but I remember it and the medias were more worried about this than about the Russians). September 11, the growing instability of the Arabic world and the growing popularity of radical islamism only gave the phenomenon more visibility.

Embrace, I strongly suggest you do a lot of reading before posting further wild guesses on the interwho wink

Uh no sorry, I am pretty sure I know a lot more about history than you self pretentious historians here. And I suggest you improve your reading skills, because I never claimed there was no terrorism in the 80's. I said there weren't such things as 9/11, Madrid, or the Paris massacres going in the 80's. Name me one example. Oh, wait you can't? None of you can and just like to argue without arguments.

So please, be so kind to re-read my posts, if you have in fact. And stop being such condescending know-italls.

How didn't bin laden bomb anything on 9/11?
As for the "little babies in make-up". Just because it's all so "non-specific" to you, doesn't mean it isn't true in today's world, and not back then. Oh, and name me one other band or artists who wrote in thew 80's (or before) about the future western world being terrorized by bombs and hatred.

Not just Israel, or some far of place, but the entire western world.

What did he bomb on 9/11? Show me one news headline that refers to Bin Laden bombing something that day. Is the western world being terrorised by babies in make up? Or am I missing that as a metaphor for grown men in suicide vests? This is very poor retrofitting I'm sorry. The same flawed reasoning has been used for over a thousand years based on biblical prophecy saying "look it's happening, it's the end of days" and you're seriously making a similar case for prophecy of a Prince song? Prince has recorded how many songs? With how many political lyrics? So something as vague as this is somehow prophecy? You're trying to push square pegs into rounds holes I'm afraid. I just hope Prince isn't reading this. He might facepalm his mole off. I can't tell if you're being serious or not. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're just kidding around.

Lust, why can't you simply answer my questions?

I asked you to name me one example of pop lyrics about a future western world being terrorized by bombs and hatred, Prince lyrics or not. You claimed there are plenty of such lyrics, but you can't even name me one?

All you do is projecting your own negativity on my thread.

Is it because you have no arguments?

You know, just because you can't understand metaphores, doesn't mean Prince uses them a lot.

And just because you have issues with people of faith, doesn't mean they are all crazy and all of a history a scam.

What do you think. Prince recorded this epic tune somewhere around 86 probably.

Perhabs he wrote the lyrics before.

They go like this:

"as bombs explode around you and hate advances on your right,

the only thing that you can be sure of is the love we make tonight"

and

"as little babies in make-up terrorize the western world,

the only thing that matters baby is love between a boy and a girl"

These lyrics are accompanied by sirenes and screams of terror.

Then the best part is the prayer to Jesus:

"Oh dear Jesus, save us from temptation, oh dear Jesus save us from hell.

Save us from the madness that threatens us all.

Can U hear us? It's hard to tell

In Ur name we pray!"

Did Prince really see the future with his "crystal ball", like he wrote 3 years later with the song called the Future on the Batman album? Or was he just playing?

There were many terrorist attacks and planes hijacks in 85-86, lots of them already coming from Arabic countries against "the Western world' or its planes (remember the US bombing Kadhafi in retaliation?), and I believe P was addressing this in those lyrics. Terrorism, unfortunately, is nothing new. Therefore there was nothing prophetic about those lyrics, they were addressing the news of those days. "Hate advances on the right" is also likely to be a reference to some Republicans or extreme right movements, who of course always capitalize on terrorism to foster "hate" towards foreigners/Arabs/muslims, etc.

This shows the importance of knowing your History, not doing so may lead one to misinterpret things wink

Oh so now what you "believe" Prince wrote about is correct and whatever I say is an unfounded opinion based on a lack of knowledge of history. That's funny, because that is just your opinion and your judgement of somebody (me ) you don't even know. How immature. Got anymore of these charming personal attacks in your pockets?

Or you could just:
Name me a terrorist attack in the 80's that was like 9/11, Madrid, or Paris.

Name me one example of the 80's where terrorists flew planes into buildings to massacre as many innocents as possible.

Name me one example where terrorists would blow up commuter trains just to murder as many innocents as possible.

And name me one incident in the 80's where terrorists would organise a simultaneous attack in a major city, using kalashnikovs and suicide vests to brutally slaughter as many people as possible at concerts, cafés and football matches.
Hell, you could even use the 90's if you can't find any 80's examples.

You know you can't and thus you are revising history yourself. How striking, those who claim to know the history of terrorism and those with other opinions don't, revise it themselves. What a way to win an argument.

Prince mentions Africa and hijacking in "Mountains". I don't think any ISIS terrorists male or female are wearing much makeup.

Definitions of metaphor

a figure of speech in which an expression is used to refer to something that it does not literally denote in order to suggest a similarity

Types:
dead metaphor, frozen metaphor
a metaphor that has occurred so often that it has become a new meaning of the expression (e.g., `he is a snake' may once have been a metaphor but after years of use it has died and become a new sense of the word `snake')
mixed metaphor
a combination of two or more metaphors that together produce a ridiculous effect
synesthetic metaphor
a metaphor that exploits a similarity between experiences in different sense modalities
Type of:
figure, figure of speech, image, trope
language used in a figurative or nonliteral sense

It still suprises me that some longterm Prince fans take Prince lyrics always so literally. I would think it is more than apparant that Prince is a writer of metaphores. Almost every song he wrote contains at least one or two. Crystal Ball is full of it.

I would also like to remind the bad readers among us that my position is not that Prince literally has seen the future.

Then maybe, Embrace, it is time to remind us poor readers what it IS that you're trying to say, because this thread is getting a little out of hand..All we have is one verse in a song that lasts 10 minute or so that could be seen as prophetic regarding the recent terror attacks. But which could also be explained another way.

Your argument seems to boil down to the fact that terrorism is worse now than it was in the 80s, therefore Prince talking about terrorism in the 80s (where it was already happening) was prophetic.

If I write about global warming now and in 20 years North America is a desert am I a prophet? After all (skip forward 20years) "it's much worse now" "name one flood or huricane or drought that was as bad in 2015 as it is now" "go on, you can't can you because Lust was a prophet"

Instead of getting all pissy because no one agrees with you. Google Occam's razor, apply it to your theory and tell us the results.

If you know all and others don't know shit, don't talk with others. If you're not able to have a proper conversation with other people without flaming them if they express disagreement, don't start one. And if you come here to bait people into arguments, go on another message board. shrug lockdance

I'm certainly not going to continue a conversation with someone who flames everyone replying to their OP and makes use of intellectual dishonesty to justify the flaws in their original statement.

Good luck to you finding other fishes to bite your bait.

I actually happened to enjoy this thread. Finally an interesting discussion about Prince´s lyrics from one of his fan favorite oldschool outtakes. You don´t see that very often on the org these days.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Also, completely overlooked by you guys is that attacks such as 9/11, the Madrid bombings and the Paris massacre, never happened before. Indiscriminate brutal slaughter of as many innocent civilians as possible was never the goal of IRA, ETA or RAF, nor of "Arab terrorists".

What about the 1996 bombing of Kobar Towers? That was huge and prior to 911.

If we go back further, 18 April 1983 - The US embassy in Beruit was destroyed by a car bomb, 63 people killed. The attacke was claimed by The Islamic Jihad

There are many more and I would post a link but it does not seem to work for me.

The French wiki page is quite exhaustive, though it only lists major attacks: https://fr.wikipedia.org/....A9es_1980

Not trying to get into a debate, so please don't take it that way. To clarify, this is me discussing your topic.

Some songs about this issue? Well, off the top of my head, I'll use the example of Time Zone's "World Destruction", which talked about MANY topics that were happening in the world of the 1980's, including Radical Islamic terrorism:

https://youtu.be/4VgLkk_drx4

Of course, terrorism wasn't as prevalent at the time, but it still existed for sure. In particular, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the Libyan Government, The Islamic Jihad and the Islamic Force were all responsible for many attacks. Now, perhaps it seems prophetic for you, but I feel the lyrics were more designed to just relate to the various incidents that were happening at the time, as well as the disturbing trend of children being recruited into many of these organizations. "Little Babies in Make-up" could relate to the child soldiers of the Congo, or it could just be used to conjur an image of a minor playing a very disturbing game of "dress up" (i.e., taking on the role of a soldier or armed militia member, a decidedly "grown up" image).

Here's a list of some of the incidents that I think Prince is referencing in the song. Of course, in a way, it still winds up being unintentionally "prophetic", for the simple reason that history has not only repeated itself...it has escalated.

For your study on the topic, check out this link:

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/target/etc/cron.html

Some interesting info there, and it may give you some insight into the world at the time Prince was writing the tune. Not saying you don't know your history, but a refresher is always good (heck, I was alive at the time of all of those, and many I had forgotten about until I looked at that page).
