19 YEARS AGO TODAY!!! Prince celebrated his 'emancipation' from his Warner Bros. contract in 1996, with a concert broadcast on MTV, BET and VH1 to preview the 3CD set Emancipation released the following week. Did you watch this show on TV? Did Prince's release from Warner Bros. mean anything to you?
Also, do any of u guys remember watching this and where were u at the time?? I was living in Marshall, Minnesota at the time and the fond happy memories are flooding back to me now!!
Also, to any UK fans on here, was this shown over here and if so, on what channel/s??

Oh wow, 19 years went by fast! I remember (and still have) the full-page ad in USA Today for the album. The night of the concert, I watched it in the suite-room of my dorm, trying to convince my roommates that Prince was still relevant

I don't think it was broadcast in the UK ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

No matter what, there are times when you feel like sipping Emancipation again. The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter

I watched, I remember he did 4 songs, including Get Yo Groove On.
I remember people were disappointed in that they expected everyone to be talking about it the next day & the reaction was more "meh."

. Gotta love that in the promo piano gig for his upcoming tour he played... "Sweet Thing". A song he's covered numerous times. He's got more than a thousand songs to pick from and he performs a cover. © Bart Van Hemelen

Thanks
You're correct. The Vault confirms it was broadcast by MTV Europe on 23 November. ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

It's weird, but the song Emancipation is one of his most underwhelming tracks despite its message and musical energy. Disc 2 of the set was a triumph, however.

It wasn't broadcast in France and I only saw it a few months later on VHS. I remember buying Emancipation on my way to my odd job on the day of release, though. Was a student and had to go thru 3 hours of nonsensical phone surveys and get back home to finally get to play it. I loved it instantly and still do to this day. I can still see myself catching the triple CD in the wrecka stow. I had just turned 20 a few days earlier. Hard to believe I've lived almost as long since that day as the duration of my whole lifetime back then Will I still be here in 19 years to discuss HnR? I thought i had the ad for the concert, but alas, that's lost. But I do have the ad for the launch of TheDawn.com, and an interview from Nov 12, 1996 about the album (which came out on the 19th in US)

The first album I missed on release day, every album from Come to Chaos and Disorder I got on release day. I had to wait until Xmas 1996 to get it and felt bad for my Mum who paid like $69NZ for it then. Nowits like $5 every where. My copy was uncensored, but bought a censored copy last year. . Remember loving it back then, even the rap, remember playing to death Disc 2, especially Saviour and Holy River. My mother who hated Prince, amazingly loved his version of Betcha by Golly wow. That was the only Prince/TAFKAP song she liked besides The Most Beautiful Girl. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

wow, Funny How Time Flies
Yes I watched it, I wondered would a different Prince rise from the chaos & disorder... the performance was too much too much happening that I couldn't focus on the music but I walked away thinking the music must not have been much if I was overwhelmed by the pomp and circumstance

I first heard the album at an advance listening party together with a couple of other fans organised by a newspaper, and it was remarkable how our initial enthusiasm -- "three discs of new music, yay!" -- turned into disappointment. Halfway through I realised "this is worse than D&P", which was the low bar until then (disregarding rubbish like C&D because it wasn't a real album but contract filler). © Bart Van Hemelen

. You forgot to mention the child drama. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

First Prince album I didn't rush out to buy. I remember listening to it for the first time and thinking "How many songs can he start by singing the song's title?" Been a long while since I've given it a listen, but I'm sure it could have grown better with age... maybe!?

To save time, as I was busy doing something else at the time, I just copied and pasted the info from an original post on Facebook, and there was no mention of the baby drama in the original post!! If the original poster thought it was significant to the subject in hand it would have been mentioned as well!!

Gotta love how you turn anything into some kind of deep flaw in Prince.

I remember when this album was released veteran actor Donald Sinden appeared on breakfast television with an interesting anecdote about Prince. Sinden had been invited backstage after one of Princes UK shows and the two struck up an unlikely conversation about ferret keeping. In the back of the room one of Princes band was noisily packing up his xylophone. Prince went crackers at this interruption and launched a FULLY BUTTERED toasted teacake at the surprised musician. Sinden said "I said to him I'm not having any of that you shitehawk" and left the building in tears.
