Since 1982.
I saw the 1999 video then I went to play. I recall singing the lyrics that I could remember as I propelled myself back and forth on the swings. I left the playground with a sore throat, But I was hooked from then on. I walked to school for the next month so that I could save my bus fare to buy the 1999 album on vinyl. Then I played it so much on my dads old record player that they got me a turntable of my own. It even have a built in tape deck. I got a part-time job down the market and bought every Prince album/single/cassette I could get my hands on.
I bought tickets to every Prince concert he played or even cancelled in London. And between the late 80's and 90's I saw Prince 10 times.
I see that he plans to play here again. Well, now I have a full time job, but with the prices that his tickets go for online, and the speed in which they sell out I'll probably never see another one of his concerts.
Over the years I have made and lost many friends, but Prince's music has never left me. Sure sometimes his new material would be challenging, but that's what keeps it interesting for me. I would love to be able to steer his career to my own personal whims, but his creativity should flow in any direction it seems fit. Sometimes I wish his albums were more challenging. So these new concerts sound like a step in the right direction.
I have been a Purple fan far to many years for me to calculate. I just don't have enough fingers to count on.

You'll have to listen to some 80's billboard crap if you want to have a clear idea of how much he's been revolutionary.

His influence on nowadays sound and production tricks is vast. Much of it originates in the Golden Era. Don't miss the videos matching the albums : PR Live, The Detroit '86 Birthday Concert, SOTT The Movie, Livesexy '88.

I have the Sign O The Times movie and I have a show called Dortmund 88. Not sure if that's the real name or not, the file on my iTunes is called Dortmund 88. I can appreciate that a lot of what he was doing at the time has had a major influence on what came after but to be honest, revolutionary or not, they were (and are) brilliant songs and albums. Dirty Mind and Controversy are probably my favourites. Chronologically speaking, the first album of his I didn't like is the symbol album (though I'm not crazy about Diamonds and Pearls either). I actually do like a lot of the 90's stuff but overall, I find that decade very hit and miss. Same with from 2000 onwards. But from 78 to 89 I don't think he put a foot wrong.

Give me a break, I was only born in 1990 :-P

And I grew up with an older sister who insisted on me listening to her Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls CD's. You don't know true torture until you've sat through Spice World The Movie on repeat.

20 times....
I still wake in a cold sweat with the song "Wannabe" stuck in my head..

I was wondering If I'm a real Prince fan. I've only Purchased 25 of his albums but I've heard all of them ( I think) Out of all the albums he's put out I only like about 100 Prince songs which is pretty small considering the amount of material he's put out in the last 37yrs

You, my friend, need some B-sides, side projects, related artists and Bootlegs.

These are almost mandatory steps if you really wanna grasp the dimension of the Work.

It's better than Graffiti Bridge.

lol I'm with you on the Spice Girls and Wannabe. My younger sister used to play the video repeatedly and that song still gives me bad flashbacks today.
.
I got into Prince when I saw the Gett Off video when I was 15 and thought who's this dirty little freak lifting up girls skirts and singing about 23 positions in a 1 night stand. So that's almost 25 years...shit that makes me feel old

loved him from 84-86. He kind of lost me in 87-88 period but got me back in 89 and then lost me in 90. Once 1991 hit Diamonds and Pearls and then the symbol album back to back hooked me for good. I have been a die hard fan ever since through the ups and downs. Actually the 3rdeyegirl era is an up for me where most people hate it. Its been the best time as a fan for me since the Rainbow Children era. I hope he keeps things going. Its exciting now with all of the new music. Do I like everything he releases now? no but I sure love all of the output. I like about 75% of it which is more than any other artists output right now.

5 Years... I listened to 20Ten and thought 'Is this it? Isn't Prince supposed to be some sort of musical great?', so I bought 1999 to find what the fuss about.

Well, we are talking about a superstar from the 1980s, so that shouldn't really come as a surprise.
In my case, my first album was Lovesexy in 1988. First time seeing him live was the Nude tour in 1990.

Of course i'm just kidding. All of my favorite artists come form the 60's, 70's and 80's. So, no surprise for me of course.
