Why these concerts only piano and voice?
"For several reasons: because I will not have bad reviews, to a challenge to myself, not to repeat the things I do for thirty years only because they make me feel safe and I want to try new things. For the first time will play the my songs on a grand piano, only my voice into the microphone, nothing more: nude and even more true, present themselves to the listener exactly what they are. Being able to sing in a theater where you listen to the echo of Your voice is an experience of pure joy. "

Hard to imagine an acoustic version of some of his songs we know very funky and electrical.
"I never know what will happen when I go on stage, depends on the place and the atmosphere that is created with the audience. For the ladder I think some songs born on the ground or on keyboards, to those who have already played this way in my concerts or those in which the keyboards play an important role also in the original ".

You nervous about this unprecedented tour?
"When people pay to see you you can not be nervous. You do not have the right."

How did you choose the city for the concerts?
"The determining factor was the presence of important theaters and with good acoustics, because the piano and the voice will be amplified to a minimum."

She argues that young artists should no longer sign contracts with the majors: what should they do instead?
"Record companies are not investing more about the artists. One of the reasons I decided to entrust the Tidal Hit'n'Run Jay Z it is because it has the structure to promote the album in the right way. It offers publicity and widespread distribution in the world without having to spend much money for it. But the real problem today is to be paid by the record companies, especially in the case of new artists. Jay Z is an artist and understand what is the artists, its structure is fast, the record companies They are slow. If I were to start today would continue to play without bothering to sign a contract. "

The digital age has won on the physical medium and to analog?
"I do not mean that everything digital is ok. There were so many expectations but Apple music works like the old record companies, it acts like a bank to finance the first record. No one became rich with the download, only the record companies and the services benefit as downloading. Is there anyone who can tell me what happened to the earnings for the 40 million copies downloaded album Adele 21? They remained for much in the pockets of service providers. Signing a contract means seeing service and label providers that share gains, and then wait six months to get the money for downloading. It makes no sense. "

The Tidal Jay Z is the answer to everything?
"So far we have done well, we were all already paid in advance. (The sound system in the study begins to croak and he commented ironically:" This is what happens to speak ill of Apple "). The record companies have killed music: to continue to sell records fielded accountants, lawyers, manufacturers alongside artists in recording studios to make repetition and cliches reassuring things. That's why the music world has collapsed. "

Today in rock no longer risks, seems more fanciful the electronic scene.
"The problem today is that no one learns more technique, there are no more big band jazz and fusion. But then today there is no one to imitate, there are more Weather Report or the Al Di Meola".

She became a Jehovah's Witness: his new faith influence the writing of the texts, in the past very explicit and sexy?
"Faith has influenced my way of saying things, pushing me to write real things in a more sincere, concise and direct; to think a lot more to detail. As for sex, it is not the religion to influence me, if anything, the fact that in my audience today there are also the children of my old fans, who have since started a family. The audience has gotten bigger, I prefer to be more nuanced than some issues. "

"Baltimore", the song against recent racist murders in the US, was also surprised by his decision to commit. What can be done against this violence?
"I do not think I committed just now, there are tons of my social texts, just listen to songs like Judas smile or Golden parachute. I have no formula to suggest against violence, people get killed in the street and nothing happens, I think everything this proves to be the rule "cause and effect". Listen to the new song of Krs One Drugs won, talking about this. Cause and effect was also when the record producer Clive Davis of Columbia said, "We have made you do this record get rich, for what we are live. '"

He believes therefore that there is a racial problem with the recording industry?
"We have always had problems. U2 have no problems with their label, love. But Sam Cooke died because of record labels and even Otis Redding."

Meeting over, it's time to sleepovers. At Paisley Park they are forbidden alcohol, you drink juices and mineral water, you can not smoke even outdoors, where the temperature dropped close to zero. But music is superb and you always hope to be able to meet the Prince.

It wouldn't be a Prince interview without his critique of the music industry and how he relates serious issues like racism and compensation inequities for the work of recording artists by labels. At least, he talked about past songs like "Judas Smile", "Golden Parachute" and "Cause And Effect" and how those lyrics reflect his thoughts on violence in the world.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

An audience with PrinceBecause a European tour Prince receives exceptionally journalists in his studio. If a question does not like him, he is going to play a song. "If everything I have knocks a transcendent experience."
Love symbol, which replaced the name of Prince between 1993 and 2000, lies on the floor and pointing to the stage. Audience has settled on beanbags, cushions and high stools. There lit candles in the concert hall that feels like a nightclub. There's the sweet, sickly smell of incense.
The concerts and jams until the sun comes up the pop star Prince passes as he wants in his studio Paisley Park (in Chanhassen, Minneapolis in the US state of Minnesota), are legendary for their endless musicality.
He can suddenly announce on its website and then there are dozens of lucky for $ 40 at. Nobody knows how long Prince will play or what he will do. Last weekend it happened for the third weekend in a row. The night before, buzzing around, he played after his concert three hours.
If Prince sits down at his keyboard, the mouse still. Loosely he plays Raspberry Beret, hit from 1985. Public may meeknippen with fingers. Intense is the version of Starfish and Coffee. Again, participatory audience for the oh-oh-choir. After six songs solo (Diamonds and Pearls, With You, Sweet Thing) come to Something In The Water (Does Not Compute) his new band there.
The improvised funkjam after is firmer, with among others the young guitarist Donna Grantis, a member of his wife's band 3rdEyeGirl and The New Power Generation, as tough eyecatcher.
Unexpected invitation
The invitation to come along came unexpectedly: Prince wants to share. Five European music journalists (Belgium, England, Netherlands, Spain, Italy) are welcome in his studio for an interview and music. The idea was a "thorough discussion" with Prince about the state of the music industry and how he has managed to remain a viable and successful concert artist in this tumultuous time. Knowing that Prince basically has a notorious hate media is an irresistible invitation. But it is not just. The 57-year-old Prince to sell a European concert tour.
Even though it is not yet confirmed: Prince occurs on December 5 twice in Carré, Amsterdam. On to the famous Paisley Park complex in Chanhassen, a little sleepy for place among the countless lakes around Minneapolis. The father of Prince, John L. Nelson, who was a jazz pianist, lived here his whole life. Prince owns two houses and working there for years and years as a singer, musician in the studio complex. A according to the eponymous song of paradise ("Paisley Park is in your heart"), but on the outside a tight, white office building. The purple exterior is, as we at seven o'clock in the evening arrive, a hint, because nowhere else is a sign.
Jovial, the receipt by Trevor Guy - dressed in black like everyone there, long straight hair and a hat, beloved by guitarist Donna Grantis. As Prince 'direct assistant Guy works for his label, NPG Records. Smiling broadly leaves it there be no misunderstanding: that the press here today is welcome, is exceptional.
The property is strictly protected, seldom there are tours. In the corridor leading to the studio hangs a timeline of highlights of the career of Prince and lots of photos. Grammy to gold plate - impressive. Of the two studios that follow is Studio A, where Prince works, the most interesting. Again, an atmosphere of the Thousand and One Nights: everywhere burn incense and candles and there are benches and cushions in all colors. And then there is the meter-long giant mixer in space. In the middle, above the buttons board, the vocal microphone hangs. Prince need not move to record anything. This is evident from the guitar pedals under the table: a matter of plugging.
I just do not get bad reviewsIn the other studio, we see a black-and-white photograph of his father in a list on something resembling an altar. Through the Galaxy Room, a black-lighted trophy room with symbols from space, we go to a big hall of mirrors where central drafted a white drum state. "Did you see that movie of Prince and his drum solo on Instagram last", points Trevor. "It was here." At first, hung ceiling curtains, but Prince rather leave away because of the acoustics, he adds. "He plays the spaces as if they were instruments. He feels the atmosphere and energy, and adapts his music to it. There is no sense of time here. He creates whenever he feels like it. "
This can be any time. The New Power Generation, the music community around Prince, often working late into the night. Record label Warner Music had long co-owner of Paisley Park. It was a time when the studio had many commercial merits. Since Prince manages itself, the lake is a 'self-sufficient' clubhouse where alcohol or cigarettes or meat are unacceptable. All chosen by Prince musicians live nearby. Around noon they trickle in, they are the most productive evening in the studios, the jamruimtes, or in the two concert halls.
Does anyone have a question?
We feel his presence when listening to the music of his protégé, guitarist Andy Allo. Back of the room, he looks at us with a reserved look like animals in his zoo. Suddenly his voice sounds from behind his keyboard on stage. "Hey," cries Prince. "Does anyone have a question?"
As if we only just see the frail, in white dress with frivolous scarf crossed singer sitting there, we go forward. Super Nonchalant we sit at his feet (white slippers with hakzool). Another or a better place is not there. The setting suits him visible.
All the more because his hands on the keys and his mouth to the microphone musical interludes can usher questions he does not like. Joint drafting is allowed, recordings are prohibited.
On the occasion of the invitation he is short. Under the name Prince Spotlight: Piano & A Microphone There is a tour place from 24 November: a month's Prince beautiful historic concert halls in Europe for performances on a concert grand. The concerts in this free form is a long-cherished wish, he says. He has reached a point in his career that he is ready for it. "This is more naked."
And given the invariably rave reviews - "I just do not get bad" - he wants to see how it is received this evening. The setlist he decides on the spot. Whether he is nervous of the idea? Just rolling his eyes wearily. "As long as they do not pay you." Then, to play a few bars from Raspberry Beret.
He European media invite to him was a "crazy idea" that he got at night, he chuckles. Topics deal with multiple journalists at once around like a piece of soap. Especially when he is asked to Purple Rain once to describe a dove? His fingers begin the horror tune from the Twilight Zone.
Revealing.
His answers remain compact. Prince prefers to show how it is here, with all musicians. And tell he mentors many artists in their charge, from singers like Janelle Monae and Lianne La Havas to new discoveries as Judith Hill. He says that their development pleases him and that he is pleased with the exchange of music. "That inspires me. Then I give them too quiet my music ideas with. "
That make his lyrics are much less explicit than in the past with his jehova faith. He has it all "better learn to say," and is more aware of the age of new audiences. In new versions of his songs, he does not believe, he shakes his head resolutely. "That life is interesting."
With the protest song Baltimore, on the riots in that city, he made a statement in May. Prince refers in particular to Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old African American, who died a week after his violent arrest by the police. There he unfortunately has only a little depth at uiteg. Yes, he sought the confrontation, but that was not the first time, he refers to previous socio-political songs of his, such as Silicon and Judas Smile.
Prince is the businessman who strongly agitates against streaming services and record labels. Previously, he had no time for the online distribution of music. Meanwhile, he makes it challenging sport of the music industry to move its digital music platform available. Recently, he took everything from streaming services Spotify and Apple Music and chose Jay Z's Tidal. "I believe in him," he explains. "He is also an artist, he has a good team and it is paid directly."
Because of the many questions about which choice he becomes irritated. "Revenue gain from music, is that such a silly question? Why must I always explain it? What do you think a good selling artist like Adele deserves to Spotify? That is not correct? Moreover, I reach a new young audience at Tidal. "
We would like to hear from him about his drive as a musician. Then he talks nicely about what he called "a transcendent experience" called: the moment when everything comes together, the band goes all out and he felt the song prolongs and sends another direction. He often gives clear instructions to the band, he says, and then uses terms such as "confusion" or "times". Sometimes the silent cues that everyone feels. Prince calls it 'in the zone'. How's that feel? "It's like I come out of my body and I introduce myself as a fan standing in the hall."
During the concert he tells the audience that he had journalists to visit. Booing. "There's also asked me whether we always manage to get 'in the zone'. Of course, I said, I am my audience still required? It must happen every night, I said. The question is more: when? Because I force it just off the band. "

Reminds me of the time I was lucky enough to see him soundcheck in Stockholm. He walked through the small crowd and asked me 'how's the sound?'

I said 'all over the shop to be honest, is your soundman pissed?'

He nodded at this then said 'do you like the music of status quo?'

I said 'they're not my cup of tea'.

He grimaced at this then sprinted away like a mad gazelle.

What a flump.

This Prince/U2 quote is from back in 1988 when Prince (Sign O The Times) lost the Grammy to U2 (The Joshua Tree) for best album of the year -

AND like written above by Ego101... it was Housequake and not Guitar (from 2007)..
