Appreciation for Valentina the song

"Valentina" is a song off Prince's 2009 album LotusFlow3r.

This song has been growing onto me for a while now, and now I can safely say it's one of my favourite post-2000 P songs. smile

It's groovy, funky, soulful, poppy and jazzy. The drum beats sound like a sample of the drums from "The Beautiful Ones".

Plus the message of this song is unusual - it's basically Prince "talking" to the then-toddler child of a Mexican actress (can't remember the name right now :-/)

Yeah... The 'late night feedings' line is kinda... Yeah. He could have sent that song in an email. But I guess since the song was address to a baby...

I mean it's catchy... I'm just glad I could reach the latch.

It´s a very underrated musical gem , I absolutely love the slow, lazy , pounding beat and the Santana-esque guitar solo in it is one of my favorites of the past decade but I wish he´d release it again with completely different lyrics because it seems that many fans find them either a bit creepy or too personal, or both. Not many people can relate to a song that is dedicated to and about Salma Hayek´s daughter Valentina. It will probably age badly and I´m not sure how one day Valentina is going to feel about the lyrics but they are indeed highly unusual. wink

The vocal delivery reminds me a bit of Lil Wayne, there´s just something about the cadence that evokes a Lil Wayne image in my head though of course Prince does NOT sound like him .

-

In my opinion, this is one of those songs of the past decade that would greatly benefit from being rewritten. I feel the same way about songs like Lion of Judah or Gold Standard....love the music but can´t really get into the lyrics. But cool to see him constantly come up with new beats and melodies after so many years. I´d like to know what exactly those who don´t like this song dislike about it. Is it the lyrics? His singing/talking/rapping ?

I see what people are saying about the lyrics.

But, its not like the dude actually sat down and had this conversation with the little tit feeder. Being a single male nearing his forties, I've eencountered similar situations. U see a MILF, and if in the mood for a moment of fantasy, this is a scam Mario that may quickly play out in your mind. Ure looking for an 'in' and that plays along with the jealousy cat for this little toddler has their mits on what you desire. It also highlits the overlap of the venn diagram involving a life necessity and sexuality.

It's all just some playful fantasy on the fly. I get no notion of some kind of serious game plan here. Not to far from the notion when a wife, and mother of three, takes off her robe and the words that come out of fathers mouth are, "ohh Mama!". Many people role play with the concept of mother vs. woman.

I feel that if people would take the lyrics a touch less literal, it would lighten the song up a bit and it might feel more playful than creepy.

This is all for nought though. This post will automatically turn me into a pervert and Kenner PD will be knocking on my door to put me on the sex offender registry.

How does that even happen? Sometimes I write two different posts quickly and the site tells me I'm posting too fast.

As for the song, I love it, I always have. Love most of MPLSound apart from Box O Chocolates.

RIP sad

Apart from the first 2 songs and the very last,

I like MPLsOUND... it's a good album, I mean 6 good songs on 1 disc... that's not bad for a Prince-album.... imo...... cool

Frankly, I think it was pretty disrespectful of Prince to make that song about a married woman and her baby. It's a wonder her husband didn't kick his little butt!

The groove on this track is awesome and his production sounds 3D.

Lyrically it's totally inappropriate, but it sounds like it's all meant with a smirk and a wink.

Laugh out line for me is always: "Running down a fonky hall!"
