Prince was Scared.I mean if that Album came out before "Crystal ball" who is gonna Buy it besides Fans? when you Bury a Record like that you are Afraid of tanking.Prince should have dropped that Unlug back in 92 or 93&He missed the Boat on that IMHO.
Scared? Maybe. Is it possible he would make less money from a mainstream release?

hmm
of course it was about Money.the Cat walking around talking about Number 1 at the Bank.but that Album as a Single Release would have Been in the Same Bin as the "1999 Re-Mastered from 99 IMHO in the 49-99 Cent Cut out Bin IMHO.

Lack of a producer and a proper marketing team?

This is a good question...

I think it would have been commercially risky for Prince to release 'The Truth' as a "proper" release. It's a great album, but let's face it,it would have flopped with mainstream audiences. So,it made sense to release it as part of 'CB',since it's the type of album that mostly his diehard fans would like.

But if he HAD released it the normal way,the song "Dionne" would have made an excellent first single smile

Hmm. I think it would have had the potential to be a hit in the UK - I mean, not a massive million-seller, but certainly a hit. If he'd come over and promoted it by doing an acoustic show on something like 'Later with Jools Holland', maybe a session on Radio 1 as well, I think it would have really taken off, as well as restoring his reputation with the critics.
I agree. mr.green

I feel the same about One Nite Alone (the piano cd). Whilst I'm sure many people would argue that TRC is a better album, I feel that if Prince had released One Nite Alone to retail and backed it up with some kind of solo piano apperances, it would have got far more critical & journalistic attention, with the result that it could easily be a hit. Journalists are always looking for some kind of hook to base the stories on, something that will resonate with their readers. Critics would have been far more likely to write articles on Prince going back to basics - good old fashioned singer-songwriting (for either The Truth or ONA) than they are to write about his new religious direction (which would turn off most fans in Europe).

Because it was weak Prince material

Rd, are you seriously suggesting Animal Kingdom was weak Prince material?

lol I know AK is widely held as great songwriting but you know me..gotta be different.

Me don't like The Truth much either. But as a song, I guess Animal Kingdom is my favorite of that album. OK, the lyrics are somewhat goofy, but the music sounds fine to me. And I like the guitar on this track...
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

If you remember we were just supposed to get The Truth album for being among the first 100,000 to join his mailing list. You were to call the 1-800-New-Funk number and then they were supposed to send you the free disc.

The Truth has some great material, especially Comeback... i think it would have been well-received had it had a wider release, and more attention. Not a hit, but maybe some critical respect.
