Le Grind - Are You Kidding me? One thing that is exceptionally cool about being a Prince fan is that the body of work is just so immense. Lately I have been finding myself going back to listen to obscure classics that I certainly enjoyed the heck out of back in the day but for whatever reason just dont listen to much any more.
So this weekend I busted out Le Grind on headphones and I was blown away. I had completely forgotten how unbelievably funky and epic that song is. The bass is just filthy plus the growls, and primary riff tattoed me with a permaenet funk face for its duration. Some parts were so darn great I actually teared up with joy. It really is Prince's funky/party side completely on fire and makes his more contemporary dance floor efforts (Life O The Party, Gold Standard, 1+1+3 etc) sound quite neutered.
This Funky beat is going show you, what your hips were made for!

I hope you have the "SOTT Homemade Deluxe Version", which has an impeccable FLAC'd "Black Album" vynil. You really get this low-end, this incredibly detailed mix that all Prince vynil records had. The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter

Thank you for the tip. I do not have it, but will now go searching. Sounds intriguing. Even just with headphones I am picking up so many layers (The piano for example) I had never noticed previously.

Le Grind, Cindy C and Dead on it - probably my favourite opening 1-2-3 of any album. Funky as fuck - Prince at his white-hot peak.

Give me Jughead without the Jug any day Seriously though, I always wanted him to do Le Grind live. Guess that'll never happen now! "Had to get off the boat so I could walk on water..."

I never think of The Black Album as my favourite- until I play it and I remember it really is... Le Grind is also my favourite opener of all time.

So this was planned for 1987 along with the whole concept of The Black Album? The same year as SOTT?! Ouch U2, ouch MJ, ouch Madonna, ouch George Michael. Ouch, ouch, ouch, ouch! I think we have a winner for best musical act anno 1987. That's to much body of work for one individual.

I understand and respect Prince's spiritual journey, and clearly there is some negativity on The Black Album, but DAMN it is so Funky, weird and experimental. It really marked the end of his Royal Badness as far as I am concerned. The edge just kind of dissapeared after this album.
Is it true he has never played it live? Not even at an aftershow? It's a shame that such a great track has not immortalized as a live performance for future generations to enjoy.

I think there's no bad track on TBA. It sounds good today the same as 27 years ago.
But it wasn't. So probably for me this was the only letdown (little, I still love W2RIL).

Definitely a career high point for me. Completely inspired...I don't think he had to process this track too much, it was just raw and funky with sounds popping out everywhere.
I miss this level of fun and fire, but it's the legacy of tracks like this that keeps many of us in awe of the man. "I'm much too hot to be cool"

Was listening to this, this morning.
NOUVEAU DANCER!!!
I actually find Superfunkycalifragisexy to be the only weak track on the CD. I much prefer the live version.

I remember in the late 80s,I obtained a cassette of The Black Album from a collector. She sent me the tape and tried to transcribe the lyrics too.You know the part in the song where Boni begins to start singing ("people get ready"....),but Prince cuts her off by saying "Not yet,Boni"?
This collector thought Prince was saying "Nice hip,Boni" somehow,I knew that wasn't the correct lyric....or was it??

he's saying "not yet, Boni"...after she starts adlibbing...then a few bars later, P screams "NOW!", and she starts over again with her verse...at least thats what I hear...

Totally agree with this statement, the Black Album had so much edge! RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

The entire "Black Album" is the quintessential house party record.
