It's very likely that if WB hadn't forced a greatest hits collection on Prince in 1993, he wouldn't have passed on releasing his "yearly album", and it's very likely that this album would have been titled Come and based on the tracks that were recorded between late 92 and early 93 for the Glam Slam Ulysses project.

What would the exact tracklist have been? What would have been the tracks order? Would all 13 tracks have been on it? Would other tracks have been on it? There's no way to answer those questions since as far as we know, Prince never compiled such an early version of Come, but nevertheless we can have a fair taste of what a 1993 Prince album could and would have sounded like.

Of note is the fact that while each and every one of those tracks was eventually released, most had been reworked (some heavily) to fit with the more polished sound Prince started to develop for TGE after recording TMBGITW in September 1993. I know a lot of fans fancy those earlier, rough versions and even though I prefer the final releases for most, I think that this 1993 album would have been received as a very experimental album, some sort of a return to form for Prince. It would have had a hard time scoring a hit, but it may have been critically acclaimed. I certainly remember the feeling of bewilderment among us fans when recordings of the Glam Slam Ulysses shows surfaced at the time: it was clear that Prince was embracing a new direction that was somewhat darker and sounding more underground than anything he'd done since The Black Album, if not Purple Rain.

Even it was a pity with "Days Of Wild" is missing from "The Gold Exp", and "Lovesign" is missing from "Come" ("Lovesign" was after all released as a single at the time of the "Come" album was released, afaik?)..

I don't like "Strays Of The World" and neither "Pope", I am just glad these 2 songs were not included, on the final releases...

You're right, this is real a mistery, according to the fact that all the show was recorded for an eventually release and there are some clips of it around (probably with sound degradation done for purpose).

As a whole, I think it would be a good album but not a memorable album.
It contains a lot of great tracks, but also some minor tunes.

Having listened to the whole GSU in fair audience quality, I can tell you there is no track I prefer the GSU versions instead of the released updated versions.

The original "Come", to say, is a great track but the "jazzy" released one to me is one of the best tracks he released in the 90's.

Also "Space" (that I absolutely love) is longer on the GSU version but unfortunately misses the "synthbell" on the refrain, and it sounds weaker without.

The great debate could be for "Loose" (the 2 versions are really different in instrumentation, this one it would be great to hear in pristine quality) but also for this one I would probably go with the released "more electro" version.


At last, I think "Pope", "What's My Name" and "Straights Of The World" are not up to be proper album tracks.

I'm happy he released on compilations like "The Hits" and "CB".

On a side note, I don't like "Poem" as a whole.

It have a sense somewhat divided in segues as in "Come", but as a single tracks is bad.
By the way, I would prefer "Come" to end with "Letitgo" and stop.

"Orgasm" is horrible to listen and it is one of the most embarassing thing released by P in all these years.

I wish that this was the album that was released. It seems a lot of folks seem to think that Come and TGE were recorded at the same time, but they weren't. I have never got the whole "darker" reference with this period.

Yes, indeed.

I remember hearing those Ulysses songs before Come or TGE was released. It was fresh, organic, the Power Trio was well represented with those versions. That's why i love the '93 aftershows where the songs are played that way.

When i finally heard the released versions, i was disapointed 'cause it was over produced, the Live sound was totally missing here.

I like the new long Come version but Come followed with Endorphine Machine, what a sound ! Race is tight here and less "RnB" (listen to the '93 live version and the '94)...

For the TGE part, Endorphine Machine was totally ruined by the production (as was Shhh).

Papa and Dark are masterpieces in my mind. They both sound like southern music pieces, the guitars, specially Dark. Come is another one that is great bout just a little overlong.

Yeah, "forced" him by paying him millions to stop delaying the project. Oh my god, what a disgrace!

I'd knock off 'Strays Of The World' which is the obvious stinker and then you have a killer LP.
