Such a great thread. Thank you OldFriends for all of the pictures. Controversy is such an amazing album. Sometimes I think it gets overlooked between Dirty Mind and 1999. Definitely one of my favorite Prince eras. I only wish I had been there to see him live during this time. And his hair looked better then than it did during any other time in Prince history ... just an observation (and opinion). If a man is considered guilty

interesting,
I think the last official Controversy tour show he did it on was in San Francicso(February) then Boston @ the Orpheum Theater 1982(March) but he did not do it on any previous shows in 1982(that I have record of) Then he performed a hot version of it @ First Avenue (off night show) where he premiered All the Critics Love U in New York, and Morris played drums on PartyUp.

OUTTAKES Home studio, 1981
Dear Uncle George is an unreleased song believed to have been recorded in early-to-mid 1981 at Prince's Wayzata Home Studio, Wayzata, MN, USA. The song's music was re-used (although possibly re-recorded) with new lyrics to become the track Private Joy (recorded in August, 1981). It is not known if the track was intended for Prince's next album (which became Controversy) before being given new lyrics. The song remains unreleased.
Delivery Boy is an unreleased song recorded in May-June, 1981, at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio, Chanhassen, MN, USA (where he moved to in April). The track was worked on further in June, 1981, at Hollywood Sound Recorders, Los Angeles, CA, USA, during work on the Controversy album, indicating that it may have been considered for the album at that point. The song remains unreleased.
Friction is an unreleased song recorded in Summer 1981, at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio, Chanhassen, MN, USA. It is not known if the track was intended for Prince's next album (which became Controversy) or any other project. The song remains unreleased.
Hard To Get is an unreleased track recorded between 10-21 July, 1979 at Mountain Ears Sound Studio, Boulder, CO, USA, during sessions for The Rebels (the same set of sessions that produced Too Long, Disco Away, Thrill You Or Kill You, You, If I Love You Tonight, The Loser, an untitled instrumental by Dez Dickerson and an untitled instrumental by André Cymone). Prince re-recorded the song in early 1981 at his Wayzata Home Studio, Wayzata, MN, USA, in what is thought to be a solo version.
The Rain And You is an unreleased track recorded at some point in 1981 at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio, Chanhassen, MN, USA. The track is a ballad, but nothing else is known about it. The track remains unreleased.
Rain is an unreleased track recorded at some point in 1981 at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio, Chanhassen, MN, USA. The track is an a cappella track with a backdrop of rain. Engineer Chuck Zwicky remixed the track in 1988 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA, but the purpose of this remix is unknown. The track remains unreleased. -PrinceVault

Lol, how cute. When I see this, I think of that letter he wrote in response to that kid in Jr. High. I feel like it was in the 1999 era, though. you can do anything

Right around this time is when the black media begin obsessing over is features and color.

Here's the Andy Warhol diary entry regarding meeting Prince: p. 749, Saturday, August 2, 1986 - Wilfredo had gotten tickets for Prince, and so cabbed over to Madison Square Garden ($3). We passed Debbie Harry and Stephen Sprouse who were there, and we sat down just as Prince jumped out naked, or almost, and it's the greatest concert I've ever seen there, just so much energy and excitement. I saw Ron Delsener and he invited us to the party for Prince at the Palladium. Prince left in a limo the second the show was over. We went into the Mike Todd Room and it was just almost empty, tables set up, reserved, and there, in a white coat and pink bellbottoms, like a Puerto Rican at a prom, all by himself, was Prince. He was just great, that image of him being weird and always with the bodyguards and everything was just dispelled, and he came over to each and every person and shook their hand and said he was so happy they came, and he danced with each and every girl – all these weird girls in sixties dresses. Literally with every girl, and he wasn't even a good dancer. And he remembered names, like he said, « So glad you came, Wilfredo. » What manners! And Wilfredo was in heaven. We asked Prince if he would be our December cover and he said we'd have to talk to his manager and we said that we'd asked the manager and the manager said to ask him, and so they said they'd work it out. We were just shaking, it was so exciting. And Billy Idol was there and you know, seeing these two glamour boys, it's like the boys are the new Hollywood glamour girls, like Harlow and Marilyn. So wierd.

"Private Joy" should have been a single! I bet it would have become Prince's first big crossover hit single. The song is vibrant and fun,and has enough 'pop appeal' to crossover.
