'Love Like Jazz' appreciation (or otherwise)

I love 'Lotusflow3r'. On a good day I might even go as far as to say it's my favourite post-80s Prince album.

HOWEVER.

'Love Like Jazz'. Oh my God.

'Love Like Jazz' has to be a contender for the "Most Boring Prince Song in the Universe" competition. It sounds like a leftover from 'Planet Earth'; it's not so much bad as mind-numbingly dull, the one black sheep in an otherwise nearly perfect album.

Anyway, I know diversity of opinion is always appreciated on the Org, so if you like 'Love Like Jazz' feel free to chip in, and if you don't then please join the circlejerk.

Well, I like the entire album from strst to finish, which ever version I'm listening to. Love Like Jazz is one of the highlights for me, it has some wonderful riffs and vocal melodies. I can understand why people might not like it though.

I do wish he'd pull out this track out in concerts a bit more. With P's fantastic guitar playing in the last few years, this is a fantastic song to jam to - the 2009 Montreux concerts are a great example.

Anyway, albums should have peaks an valleys, and I think this is the perfect rest before heavier songs like $ or Dreamer.

Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

I like it. The only thing I'm not fond of on the single disc is 77 Beverly Park.

RIP sad

Really for me it's this kind of song that makes Prince a special musician, It smooth and breezy. I love it.

I love the arrangements in this song, but I could see how some could find it boring, as it is a very smooth monotonous song, but listening to it, there's a lot of sounds going on that appeal to me, especially the guitar work. Lf is a great album, I prefer this type of 'experimenting' to HNR.

I agree with you on the concert thing. In his performances Prince can transform even his worst songs into something great (I can't think of any off the top of my head, but I know I've seen videos in which he plays brilliant live versions of tracks that do very little for me on their original albums). In fact it's a shame he doesn't do it more often.

Furthermore I don't dispute the importance of 'Love Like Jazz' in terms of the album's flow. It is good to have a rest there, and it's for that reason that I still struggle through it when I listen to 'Lotusflow3r'. I just wish he'd chosen a more interesting song to perform that role.

"I just wish he'd chosen a more interesting song.." That's just it. It is interesting. Just not interesting to you. Don't mistake your judgment for any universal truth.

I haven't. It should be obvious that everything I'm saying is just my opinion.

I do not love the use of voice and the first half of the song. It is a song without surprise: jazz without jazz.

The 'Lotusflow3r' album is indeed one of his very best, and "Love Like Jazz" is an outstanding track, both in composition and execution.

.

There is PLENTY of Jazz in this cut... listen to the vocal harmony he layed down when singing "Love Like Jazz"... that's on some Monk/Coltrane type of harmony.

.

I'm baffled at how Prince fans don't like this song... It is very Princely, so to speak.

Same here. 77 Beverly Park is pleasant enough, but that's the only song I'd swap out for something else. Perhaps "Elixer" should have gone on Lotusflower because it was too good for Bria's album. Plus, it doesn't have a true ballad.

Anyway, "Love Like Jazz" is great.

Absolutely LOVE it, with the exception of one short nasally weak vocal part that I HATE

I'll have to give it a re-listen, bearing what you've said in mind. The fact that I don't like the song now doesn't mean I don't want to like it! Nothing would make me happier than being able to enjoy 'Lotusflow3r' from start to finish without getting bored in the middle. Well, an official release of 'Purple Music' might, but whatever.

Best version is Montreux 2009, which has lead fills and a brief solo on the red Strat that is so good Rhonda has to smile and P ends it with a "I nailed it" fist-pump.

As a guitar player (and so obviously a P fan) I can tell you the riff is mind-blowingly hard to play and was possibly the highlight of what was otherwise a showcase night for His guitar playing.

Important and indispensable update: today I listened to 'Lotusflow3r' twice, taking into account what yall've said (especially Giovanni777) when 'Love Like Jazz' came around.

The good news is that it didn't bore me. Time will tell whether that was the result of approaching the song from a new angle, or whether it was just because on this occasion I was specifically looking forward to it.

Important and boring update concluded.

Cause and Effect from the montreux 2013 3rdeyegirl show springs to mind as a live version of a song that killed the studio version.

I think four people have mentioned that show now. I'll have to give it a listen. But much like the '86 Birthday Show, I haven't a clue where to find it. End of story.

I was there! Definitely top 3 highlight from the show! Silky smooth.
