I see what you are saying. On a road trip I playing HIt n Run in its entirety and then Dangelo's Black Messiah in its entirety. I was irritated at how the influential guru legend sounded like the young follower who was chasing trends to get on the radio compared to a younger artist who came up listening to him. I put Black Messiah on in the background at work all the time.. no one can understand a thing he sings. It is pleasant background music.

Nah I work in an office with a bunch of cream puff heads that wouldn't know D'Angelo from Sammy Davis jr. But they hate it when they can hear the words so this record works out great.

Thanks for this review. I pretty much feel the same. And I've been listening to it from start to end at least once a day. Still loving it.

The only 180 that I have done is I went from buying every single thing Prince has released to I don't even own this album.

I actually had a relatively similar experience with those two tracks. 1000 Hugs and Kisses I could only initially hear in context of the 90's original but it has grown on me and is now, for me, one of the catchiest stand-outs of the album.

CLASSICS are Shut this down, aint about to stop, like a mack, fall in love 2night, the ex's face and hardrocklover. Every one of those is a five star classic to me!!
very good tracks - 1000 x's and o's and june..
To me this is a killer album and I am also surprised that the negativity its getting here. Finally Prince makes a party record and this is the funnest Prince album for me since The Rainbow Children. I love it!! I also like Free Urself even though it kind of feels unfinished and a little cheesy at times but I do like it. Stare is good also so I am really excited about the next album also. Hitnrun is not for everyone as not all people are fans of electronic and hip hopish style music, especially in the Prince world. I notice alot of Prince fans love him but they like him for different styles such as R&B, pop, rock etc. I think thats why Prince always puts every style of music on most of his recent albums so that there is something on there for everyone. I like the electro sound and more current sound as honestly I still stay up on todays music scene and this fits in nicely. ITs a great changeup and this one Prince album fits nicely into a huge discography of body of work. I have noticed though that on the facebook pages the attitude is much different than on the org. It really seems like most people really love this album but on the org it gets hate. Thank goodness the rest of the fans outside of here are not as negative as the ones here. Honestly I expect the negativity on pretty much everything he does now on this site so it really doesn't surprise me. ITs too bad people don't like it here but its ok, I will listen to it and enjoy it for the ones here that don't!! GREAT ALBUM!! I have to say I agree with you that the album gets more love on Facebook. I also think you make a good point that being such a diverse artist everyone wants something different from Prince. I personally love it, you are not alone 😉 - NightChild

But here is always lovely 😉 It is interesting ' though how the public doesn't set the bar for Prince at the same level as fans, presumably as fans know the back catalogue so well and approach each release in a comparative way rather than as a mostly standalone project.

I wouldn't say I've changed 180, but certainly I like many of the songs more now. At first I was like a lot of orgersin thinking this was his weakest album. But now I really dig Ain't about 2 stop and the sound of the album as a whole - the same sound that repelled me to begin with.
I must say that it constantly bores me when he has other singers sing on his songs, often mediocre or without any of the personality of Prince's voice. The first track bores me, and the intro is tame, unoriginal and disappointing.

I listened to it a lot the first week. Even tho I didn't like it I kept thinking 'Maybe I'm missing something. Maybe it will grow on me.' Now I haven't listened to anything off it in about 3 weeks. Don't care to.

I've never had an issue with HNR, but I listen to loads of artists, so I've just been listening to other new releases. I do come back to HRN now and then.
However, I do think it would have made a great CD2 to a deluxe edition of AOA. People then wouldn't have been so critical and he could have shifted more AOA discs.
I love how the cover compliments AOA. In years to come those two albums will always be grouped into a single musical era. I can't think of any other projects like this other than the releases from 1994.
