3.Housequake

4.Slow Love

5.U Got the Look

6.Hot Thing

7.If I Was Yyour Gilfriend

8.I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man

9.The Cross

10.It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night

11.Adore + 2 min silence + Forever in My Life (hidden track)

If you mean one CD, it already fits. Its 1:19:45 according to my itunes...

If you mean one record (about 45 mins max) I would choose these 10 tracks, coming in at 43:56...

  1. "Sign o' the Times" – 4:57
  2. "Play in the Sunshine" – 5:05
  3. "Housequake" – 4:42
  4. "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker" – 4:01
  5. "It" – 5:09
  6. "Starfish and Coffee" – 2:50
  7. "Slow Love" – 4:22
  8. "Hot Thing" – 5:39
  9. "Forever in My Life" – 3:30
  10. "U Got the Look" – 3:47
  11. "If I Was Your Girlfriend" – 5:01
  12. "Strange Relationship" – 4:01
  13. "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" – 6:29
  14. "The Cross" – 4:48
  15. "It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night" – 9:01
  16. "Adore" – 6:30

  15. "It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night" – 9:01
  16. "Adore" – 6:30

I loved all of the tracks and this is a truly great album.

It's always been odd as to why this was a two disc set when the total running time is 79:59 mins.

These are my prefered tracks clocking in at 45:51.

I would have kept SOTT but I prefer the movie version.

lol wink lol

Are we allowed to add Dream Factory songs and outtakes?

I would definately add Teacher Teacher, Crystal Ball, Movie Star and All My Dreams.

But assuming we're only allowed to whittle down what was spread over the original two disc version, I guess I would pick:

1. Sign o' the Times

2. Play in the Sunshine

3. Housequake

4. The Ballad of Dorothy Parker

5. Starfish and Coffee

6. Slow Love"

7. Forever In My Life

8. If I Was Your Girlfriend

9. Strange Relationship

10. I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man

11. The Cross

Yeah, that's right, I omitted Adore. Never cared for it so suck it! razz

I never really understood why this was a double album when it would fit on one disc.

I could understand why it would need two records, but the double disc thing seemed like a sales boosting technique.

  1. "Sign o' the Times" – 4:57

  6. "Starfish and Coffee" – 2:50
  7. "Slow Love" – 4:22
  8. "Hot Thing" – 5:39
  9. "Forever in My Life" – 3:30 Joy in Repetition
  10. "U Got the Look" – 3:47
  11. "If I Was Your Girlfriend" – 5:01
  12. "Strange Relationship" – 4:01
  13. "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" – 6:29
  14. "The Cross" – 4:48
  15. "It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night" – 9:01
  16. "Adore" – 6:30

This being the pinnacle of his creativity, imo. A 3 LP set was actually warranted. So giving this release the single disc treatment isn't really necassary. But i'll play along anyway, it's fun.

When it was released I felt "It" & "Slow Love" were the weakest tracks and a little out of place. But through the years "It" has become a fav. "I could be guilty of my honesty, alright...."

"Joy in Repetition" would replace "Forever in my life" if I could chose outtakes.

Maybe a bit to long, but these are the essential tracks to me. Should have been a triple album though.

The wooh is on the one!

cds at the time only held 74 minutes. i dont remember when they went to 80 minutes, but there were a lot of double cd albums that could fit on a single disc after they went to 80, but it probably was easier to leave them as double dics rather than create a new version just for that change. that is until an album got a remaster or official reissue of some sort.

every track... right:

the whole Sign 'O' The Times album is MAGICAL.. worship

I would take off those 2 or 3 seconds with an edit (this could be done very easy)

And voilá... cool

then/ there we have the 1-Disc- 80 mins-version... heart

cd's went from 74 mins to 80 mins in around 1994 or 95/ in the mid-1990s (afaik)

at least I remember burning some 74 mins cd-r discs.... back then.. smile

^ to be fair it wasn't a "cd boosting sales technique",

- since this album was longer than 74 mins (and therefor could not be a 1-disc album in 1987).

This thing was intended for a vinyl release. So theoretically speaking it would have made even more sense to release it as a 4 CD set. lol

Two disc albums count as two options against a contract, so that may have been a motivation.

To put SOTT onto one disc now would mean a change to the previous contract which would need to be renegotiated. In fact this would make SOTT a new product as materially it would have changed.

That was certainly the case with Emancipation. Three options in one hit fulfiled the Warners contract quicker.

Record contracts are very interesting indeed when you get into the detail.

Next let's turn Purple Rain into an EP.

SOTT is perfect as it is and this is all an exercise in musical mutilation.

Sign O The times makes sense in two CD........ sorry, but this topic is so strange. How can you evaluate a book without some pages?

a couple bits of wrong there. first of all, emacipation wasnt on warners, that was kind of the whole point of being emancipated. and a double album doesnt always count as 2 albums in regards to a contract. it all depends on how the contract is set up. plus, depending on when a contract was created, a double album could have been in reference to vinyl, and would count as a double even if it fit on one cd. many contracts could still have been based on vinyl in the late 80s, unless they were brand new artists or had renegotiated at some point. but a double album no matter what format, doenst always count as 2 albums in a contract. for instance when kiss did their 4 solo albums in 78, the way their contract set up those 4 albums only added up to 1 release off of their contract.

PacManPlus

The only thing I can see removing are:

It (can't stand that song)

Adore (I think the full-length sax version of Crucial is *infinitely* better)

Slow Love (BTW, I read somewhere that he didn't actually write that song; he bought it. Is that true?)

Replace 'Hot Thing' and 'I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man' with their 7" edits (and I'm a person who usually likes the longest version of a song possible)

All the other songs are excellent IMHO

Damn. Can't get it down to one vinyl disc. sad
