Prince as a producer

I noticed that those who have covered Prince music on there own had success ex Alicia Keys, Sinead O'conner and many more but when he decides to back an artist such as Chaka Khan,Doug E fresh, Mayte, Larry Graham so much work gets put into these artist and it flops... so people what is the problem waht do u think of his producing and how can he improve.

i think the problem is when Prince produces others, their work sounds like his. How many songs on that Chaka Khan album sounded like Prince tunes? Almost all of them! Same with Larry (and that's a shame since he influenced Prince). Sinead O'Conner's version of Nothing Compares is far better than The Family's and that's no doubt due to the fact that she reworked the song to fit herself. Speaking of No Doubt (what a segueway) Waiting Room is a great song and it does not sound like a Prince tune.

I think Prince should leave sounding like Prince to Prince. If he has any faith in an artist, and producing suggests faith, he should encourage them to develop their own style rather than regurgitate his.

It worked for The Time and Vanity 6. The biggest difference nowadays is that he's not connected to a major label in any way. So he doesn't have that type of marketing and support, and neither would they, being on his label. BUT, Chaka Khan and Larry Graham are older than Prince, and when you become a certain age there IS age discrimination in the music business, especially when it comes to airplay.

It's not just one thing that works against him.

20 Years ago He could for others but over time working with Lightweight Acts hurt Him in this area IMHO.Better remembered as a Songwriter than a Producer.I Respect His Fusion of Production on Himself but not on other Acts any longer.Jam&Lewis are Producers for other folks Prince ain't been in that Light truly speaking since the late 80's.Producing for Carmen Electria,Ingrid Chavez,&alot of other Air-Head Babes Cost Him Props as a Producer IMHO.
