It has been the typical thing for an artist to say that they are influenced by Prince to make themselves look more diverse and artistic but when I hear a Bruno Mars or Weeknd song i don't hear and think of Prince at all.. not sure what Bruno Mars song your referring to but when i hear his music Prince dosen't jump to mind to call him the next Prince like some of people do.. Even with Lenny.. i hear much more Beatles, Hendrix and others than Prince..

Right... but again you're talking about influence in a very direct sense. You seem to be looking for a melody or hook that Lenny has taken from a Prince song. Arguing that even though these artists have said Prince was (for whatever reason) an influence on them and thus their work... You're saying they're wrong... because they don't sound enough like Prince?

Not at all.. His music just dosen't sound much like Prince.. to me.. Not even the singing..

All I'm saying is.. I don't think he's as big of an influence on some of those guys as some make him out to be

Chris Brown has said Prince is an influence.. Should we constantly compare him to Prince?

To paraphrase a meme I recently saw:

"I just saw a theatrical performance on semantics. It was a play on words."

I would take this thread title seriously if not for the "sometimes".

Yeah, I get it. You get bored and need some attention... Sometimes.

The title change is the perfect example of semantics... Just leave the qualifier "sometimes/in some cases" off. We live in a world of hyperbole, so the answer to your original question is "yes". It's just not very interesting that way.

Leaving "in some cases" off would include include the artists he had a bigger influence on.. Maxwell, D'angelo and whatnot.. that's not the point of this thread. We live in a world of hyperbole yet your asking me to join in and make the thread title more hyperbolic.. and some are already disagreeing with my post.. it's not that obvious to some..

Since you're not denying you're Funksterr, I'll take this as confirmation.

By who? Open your mind and you can clearly hear his influence all over today's music. I fear that you do not follow. There you go. Ignorance is bliss.

This is an example.. http://prince.org/msg/8/404568

Why are some people calling Bruno Mars the next Prince if he sounds nothing like Prince?

and TTD from the start was considered to be a Prince clone but when i listen to the music i don't hear Prince at all..

Nothing Bruno Mars does really reminds me of Prince yet some call him the next Prince

Lenny Kravitz never really sounded like Prince to me yet a lot of people seem to think of him when they think of Lenny

Terence Trent D'arby was considered a Prince clone yet he never sounded like Prince

those are just a few examples..

some people act like he's the inventor of everything in music in some cases

My 5 year old daughter and I were in the grocery store this weekend and Wishing Well by TTD was played on the PA. She heard it and asked me if it was Prince.

All of the artists you mentioned have, at times, jacked certain sounds or looks from Prince. Lenny blatantly plagiarised Wherever U Go Whatever U Do with his hit Again. Bruno's Uptown Funk is hugely influenced by The Time. TTD's whole mystique and pretentiousness was jacked straight from Prince.

...which itself was a carbon copy of The Police's Every Break You Take lol

It really isn't just music. Prince has had a huge influence on mindstate. His defiance and artistic control are probably more legendary than his music. Furthermore he has had a huge influence on eclecticism. I remember (don't judge) listening to an all saints album in the 90's n thinking it was so diverse n how it wouldn't exist without prince. Prince's commercial failings were others career. Taylor swift gets kudos now but prince was perceived a diva. Seriously this guy is a true pioneer
