THE ONE--Prince's greatest vocal EVER?

Take the time to listen.

The range. The control. The heart.

It's up there. Surely?

Hmm...such a seductive track. Must admit that I always really dug the way he sings Mayte's name in this song. Like it's at that moment I can really hear the control in his vocals, like he made sure to get the pitch, tempo, tonality, flow exactly right. A restrained but heartfelt yearning comes through in his voice at that moment--quite touching.

.

I think I actually like the NPGMC (?) version a tad more for the music, but both versions are so very nice. Hard to say though if I think it's his greatest vocal ever; he puts his unique brand of magic on the vocals of all his ballads. Makes it hard for me to compare them. (I still think he outdid himself with "Insatiable", even on the vocals. That song haunts me it's so good.)

Terrific song and vocals IMO. Just saw the video for the first time--ratherr haunting in retrospect.

No -- not for me. It's great but the greatest????

It's a nice once, but The Beautiful Ones, Adore, etc. tower over it.

Hmm, not sure, I guess becase the song bores me that I perhaps haven't come to appreciate the vocal performance in The One.

For me, I'd have to agree with The Beautiful Ones and also would like to throw Damn U into the mix.

Does he say Mayte's name in the song? How come I never noticed? Where?

First time I heard the song was on The Vibe show and I must say, Prince's vocal delivery blew me away! Such seductiveness, control and skill. Love it.

Damn U is a great shout. I remember a reviewer describing it as 'vocal gymnastics.' One of his top ballads

I love the Musicology era version where he combines the song with Q of U. I still have that video from npgmc.

Yes his version that night sounded fantastic. I am so upset that I messed up the old VCR tape I had it on

The Beautiful Ones, Crucial, Adore, I Love U In Me... All show amazing depth in Prince's vocal abilities...

Scandelous is also one of them... I don't think you can declare one as THE GREATEST they are all amazing. The One is a beautiful song.

That's the one EG.
It's a great aftershow if you like that era. Some cool band moments with the horns.
.
Prince sounds full of cold but still sounds good. I've got it on a boot called 'This Is My Night.' It's not soundboard but still very good quality.

yeah, The One is up there for me. Hard to "rank" stuff for me, but i recall being blown away on first listen, and the CONTROL was what struck me. i remember thinking if this doesn't catch fire, shame on radio, anywho... His screams are legendary but i'm not a fan of them per se, and aren't they pretty much absent? (its been a minute) Restraint can communicate passion also.

Wtf. It's a song for Mayte. But, you, if she'll live on the streets with you you should still want the same thing for your girl and get it!
