If the albums aren't working...

Given the amount of criticism Hit N Run and much of Prince's recent output has received, perhaps it's time Prince ditched releasing albums for a while and focus on putting together a truly kick-ass group and simply tour, which is where the real money is anyway. If he formed a sort of supergroup with the likes of John Blackwell on drums, Victor Wooten on bass, Steve Vai on guitar and Stevie Wonder/Herbie Hancock on keyboards he would also attract a potentially new audience. Unfortunately, no matter how talented he undoubtedly is, the harsh reality is apart from his diehard fans and people who respect the craft of top-notch musicianship, Prince is unlikely to attract many new younger listeners or be a pop star again at his age since the industry is unquestionably ageist.

It's embarrassing and demeaning to his legacy to see Prince try to be down with the kids, using 'the latest' slang and name-dropping celebrities in attempt to be relevant. He should tour with a group like the one mentioned above and incorporate new songs into the live sets and then release DVDs or stream live footage through a suitable channel. I'm sure most of us would pay to see rare and exclusive new content and material as well as umpteen variations of a particular song (he's great at reworking old and new songs as well as covers), which would boost not only his pocket book and his legendary status but also his status as a phenomenal live act. the other artists above have all expressed their admiration for Prince so if P could put aside his ego and work with them rather than some artists he discovered on Youtube, this might just be an interesting project which would challenge him musically and creatively.

The time has passed for him as a commercial artist, I believe, but this approach/business model would cement his reputation as a serious artist who remains dedicated to his craft and will ensure that the respect he has garnered throughout his career remains undiminished.

I never said P is over and done with - I merely suggested that he should consider releasing new music via his live shows, in which numerous versions of a particular song could be performed and become collectors items. I did reiterate my respect for his talent but I do feel that the nature of the current music market is fickle and youth orientated, which doesn't suit him.

Interesting thread.I have thought about the possibility of Prince putting together a jazzy band with some heavyweight names (Herbie Hancock would be great!) and doing a tour like that.Carlos Santana did something like this in the late 80s,with a band consisting of Patrice Rushen,Wayne Shorter and others.Sometimes I wonder if Prince is tired of doing the "pop" thing.Maybe collaborating with some truly talented players (in his own age group) would inspire him more.

Prince needs more support from his fans and less criticism.

AOA and HNR are good albums. They have a cool new sound and flow very nicely.

People are very quick and too eager to find fault.

Muisc has to be savoured and takes time to appreciate.

Let Prince do what he does and we'll find the journey with him takes us to some amazing places.

MrWilson

You're the one that needs a supergroup. A supergroup of friends to wake you up to reality. Imagine standing face to face with Prince and giving this opinion.

.

- sans samplersets

- way less hits, no PR!

- allround players, comfortable with rock and funck and soul and jazz and whatnot

- perhaps not discrimminating against males

.

It is so easy.

I did not even mention a quality setlist.

Oh?

The 'more music' doesn't count:

It is either vault stuff that he doesn't actively monetize on yet or it's the new stuff.
