TIDAL Gets Physical Wednesday, September 16, 2015
TIDAL GETS PHYSICAL
For the first time ever, a streaming service is selling CDs. Prince released his new album—his third in under a year, btw—called HitNRun PhaseOne as a Tidal exclusive on Sept. 7. After a week of streaming behind the service's paywall, the album was then released wide to other retailers such as iTunes and Amazon, with Tidal joining the effort by functioning as...a retailer? Yep. The service offers both regular mp3 and hi-fi (FLAC) versions of the album digitally, selling for $9.99 and $17.99, respectively. But it gets weirder. Tidal is selling the physical CD of HitNRun. If a consumer insists on this peculiar path of most resistance to attain it, however, it will set them back more than $25, including shipping. Was this inclusion part of a negotiating tactic for the exclusive by the 57-year-old artist? It's no secret Prince has notoriously struggled with the modern realities of the Internet and his music. And Tidal may have gotten something in return—in July, Prince started pulling his music off all the other streaming outlets. It remains to be seen whether Tidal will offer this functionality to other artists. You do not need a subscription to access their new store, but you are required to set up a free account, which gives Tidal an opportunity to collect user emails and potentially message them in the future to try their service. By any means necessary, people.

Fuck that. $25+shipping for that 'album' when you'll more than likely receive only the disc in a digipak. If he isn't promising a booklet with artwork and lyrics I don't see how that price is remotely with it.

13 dollars including shipping at amazon, who in their right mind would pay 25 at tidal? [Edited 9/16/15 8:15am] "You always get the dream that you deserve, from what you value the most" -Prince 2013

Agreed that the CD is worth getting. I was pleasantly surprised when I heard it. I had based a negative review on half the album.

One thing I've always hated is hearing people say "stealing music/movies online is the same as walking in the store and stealing the disc." If the physical packaging is so poor that it's rivaled by no packaging at all, that's not the consumer's fault. Since I've gotten into logistics, I'm guessing a major decision was made across the board to save on shipping costs (weight). In the 90's, I used to struggle to pull the booklet out from under those tabs. Little books stuffed with photos, unique art, LYRICS, and personal thank-yous made listening to music a more intimate experience. Then suddenly, there were these stapleless inserts that gave no lyrics, no personal touch, no credit to musicians that was easily decipherable. [Edited 9/16/15 10:06am]

It's nice to see him still pushing cds but I don't see how he expects them to sell for a higher price just because it's from Tidal when we can pick them up anywhere else.

Fuck this throwing money to millionaires and billionaires shit. Sorry P and Jay Zed.
It's shitty kids music. Of course middle aged Prince fans who don't normally listen to bleepy music think it's cutting edge or something. It's the audio equivalent of the Star Wars prequels. Prince is like old George Lucas just milking your teets.
But if any of you suckers/old farts/mugs/silly sods can work it out, this mediocre album, well.. it's free on the torrents, and still not really worth it.

Is this really the first time a CD has been sold by a streaming service? I sometimes see links to physical releases at the top of artist's Spotify pages, doesn't that count? Heavenly wine and roses seems to whisper to me when you smile...

Well those aren't technically sold by the streaming services those go to outside sources. This is literally sold within Tidal.

Prince having it on Tidal for $20 is a lesson in futility. That's what I meant by that.

"If a consumer insists on this peculiar path of most resistance to attain it"
Hey TIDAL, WTF does that even mean? You're like serioulsy bashing physical forms? You actually went there? Go away.

Middle aged Prince fans probably heard Emancipation and there's been precisely zilcho development sonics-wise since, even when you DO put the acronym EDM with it. Not that Prince was being innovative on Emancipation but, purlease, he has used samples and synths before.
