Re-discovering Goldnigga

The first time I heard this cd 14 years ago, I didn't like it that much. Just the other day I decided to dust it off and give it a spin. Boy I'm glad I did. I don't know why I slept on this cd for so long. This cd is the definition of funk. The two most tracks that I can't stop playing are Black M.F. in the house and Johnny. Man I wish Prince could be this fonky again. 1993 to 1995 to me was his most funkiest period. The N.P.G. was in full effect here. I think this album is better than the Exodus cd.

So what's up org? What do you guys think about this fonky album!

BTW Johnny is the most funkiest song Prince had ever invloved himself with. I wish he'd make more music like this.

i love this album smile first i used to wish that i could simply get an instrumental version

of it, but now i'm so used to Tony M's voice that i don't want an instrumental version
anymore smile there's some seriously funky and great music on this disc.

my fav is "Goldnigga" (all 3 parts), that groove is just cool

Always loved it. Tony M gets a lot of shit on here but I think on this he's good. The music also is so funky, the likes of Deauce & A Quarter, 2gether and Oil Can
.
Some great humour in it as well, especially Johnny

It shows the NPG band in top shape. Black MF is funny, 2Gether is nice and Call the Law makes me think about the last Diamonds & Pearls concert in Rotterdam when the show was over, people were starting to leave and then they came back to play this! Great way to end a great run of shows!
The annoying "oh oh oh" of Johnny however, is one of the most stupid things Prince has ever recorded. So all in all, it's nice but not more than that.

Always loved very much. It's pure good funk, I still have it on my ipod/phone and I listen it at least once a month.

Eh no, 'cause Gold Nigga is actually really good plus it's a different genre of music with Tony M's rapping on top..

No. I agree it made for a nice call and response game with the audience at concerts, but if you base a song on that silly chant, then you're really running out of good ideas. Just like The Ride and Blues in C it's the kind of thing that works in concert, but not on record. I agree with thedance that Exodus is a better album- if you cut out 15-20 minutes of segues. He just couldn't leave his music alone at that time! This is one of the reasons I liked Musicology: finally he released an album that was a collection of SONGS without sound effects, storylines etc. Such a relief after the topheavy Rainbow Children...

I agree, Exodus is way better than Goldnigga. 2Gether is the only really good song on the album, he should have saved that one for Exodus

FUNKYNESS

I have the rare pressing of this album with Guess Who's Knockin' . While I still hate rap and I thought it was blatantly Prince selling out for the first time, I liked the album.

I've always loved it.

Actually it was a real missed opportunity in a way. I mean in those days there was a lot of praise for those jazz/funk/hip-hop projects: Guru, Brooklyn Funk Essential, Buckshot LeFonque, US3, Ronny Jordan, etc.

Somehow Gold Nigga was exactly on that market but it was so confidential that no one even heard about it.

On the other hand because it was Prince and not some new talent maybe it would have gotten shit like Miles' great Doo Bop did.

But anyway it shows a great band at its best, even Tony's doing a good job, it's really underrated IMHO and I'm glad to see some love for it here nod

If ever rereleased I hope it'll be the original cut with Guess Who's Knocking.

The songs are stronger on Exodus, but the sound on GoldNigga was what i expected from this group at the time. I saw them in Barcelona ('93 aftershow) and the GoldNigga LP really represents that period with this NPG group, i think.
