Purple Rain Dortmund 1988 Is this anyone elses favourite live version of the track? I was just packing my things for university and listening to it really loud and was thinking there is certainly something about the singing, guitar playing amalgamated with the crowd cheering that just makes me intensly see the 80's with rose tinted glasses especially when goes "THANK YOU EUROPE" and the guitar at 1:20.
hard to explain also but its sort of nuts that prince has must have so many shows like this locked away and its pretty much locked away memories with millions of individuals internationally that are all sealed behind a metal door [Edited 9/13/15 5:47am] I'm feeling a bit fammy™

I dont trust P's shows when they're being taped for viewing purposes. He tends to overact......... more than the usual.

Prince is an artist. Some is from the heart, some is sheer acting. Good example is "making of another lonely xmas'... "I need another wing at my crib"... Love or money? Sometimes just money...

Doesn't matter to me whether he was overacting or not, it's still a great document of a fine tour. There have been some truly wonderful versions of PR over the years but I always loved the one from Dortmund. Not too long, blazing guitar... lovely.

I prefer the version he played in La Coruna in 1990. He was on fire that night and the guitar solo had an almost unreal energy. Very aggressive.

Well, it depends on how many live versions you actually have listened to. I would say that 1988 was his best year as a guitarist. He was totally original, had Clapton's jaw drop, both in virtuosity and FX pedals creativity. No wonder it gave us "Small Club", and the solos from "Still Would Stand All Time" and "Rave" are too often overlooked in favour of "Just My Imagination". "Scandalous pt. III, The Rapture" is also one of his most creative solos, up there with "Alexa De Paris". I do like the Dortmund version, at the time he was really trying not to stick to the original solo, whereas today, he seems like he wants to replicate it. The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter

That version just makes me weep especially when the head goes back and he just plays the hell out of that guitar...that show was the one that got me into Prince so I have to be thankful and boy do I miss the tone of those cloud guitars. His guitar sound these days is pretty dull.
